    Memory mapping has traditionally been an important optimization problem for high-performance parallel systems. Today, these issues are increasingly affecting a much wider range of platforms. Several techniques have been presented to solve bank conflicts and reduce memory access latency but none of them turns out to be generally applicable to different application contexts. One of the ambitious goals of this Thesis is to contribute to modelling the problem of the memory mapping in order to find an approach that generalizes on existing conflict-avoiding techniques, supporting a systematic exploration of feasible mapping schemes

    An automated OpenCL FPGA compilation framework targeting a configurable, VLIW chip multiprocessor

    Modern system-on-chips augment their baseline CPU with coprocessors and accelerators to increase overall computational capacity and power efficiency, and thus have evolved into heterogeneous systems. Several languages have been developed to enable this paradigm shift, including CUDA and OpenCL. This thesis discusses a unified compilation environment to enable heterogeneous system design through the use of OpenCL and a customised VLIW chip multiprocessor (CMP) architecture, known as the LE1. An LLVM compilation framework was researched and a prototype developed to enable the execution of OpenCL applications on the LE1 CPU. The framework fully automates the compilation flow and supports work-item coalescing to better utilise the CPU cores and alleviate the effects of thread divergence. This thesis discusses in detail both the software stack and target hardware architecture and evaluates the scalability of the proposed framework on a highly precise cycle-accurate simulator. This is achieved through the execution of 12 benchmarks across 240 different machine configurations, as well as further results utilising an incomplete development branch of the compiler. It is shown that the problems generally scale well with the LE1 architecture, up to eight cores, when the memory system becomes a serious bottleneck. Results demonstrate superlinear performance on certain benchmarks (x9 for the bitonic sort benchmark with 8 dual-issue cores) with further improvements from compiler optimisations (x14 for bitonic with the same configuration

    The Iray Light Transport Simulation and Rendering System

    While ray tracing has become increasingly common and path tracing is well understood by now, a major challenge lies in crafting an easy-to-use and efficient system implementing these technologies. Following a purely physically-based paradigm while still allowing for artistic workflows, the Iray light transport simulation and rendering system allows for rendering complex scenes by the push of a button and thus makes accurate light transport simulation widely available. In this document we discuss the challenges and implementation choices that follow from our primary design decisions, demonstrating that such a rendering system can be made a practical, scalable, and efficient real-world application that has been adopted by various companies across many fields and is in use by many industry professionals today

    Indexed dependence metadata and its applications in software performance optimisation

    To achieve continued performance improvements, modern microprocessor design is tending to concentrate an increasing proportion of hardware on computation units with less automatic management of data movement and extraction of parallelism. As a result, architectures increasingly include multiple computation cores and complicated, software-managed memory hierarchies. Compilers have difficulty characterizing the behaviour of a kernel in a general enough manner to enable automatic generation of efficient code in any but the most straightforward of cases. We propose the concept of indexed dependence metadata to improve application development and mapping onto such architectures. The metadata represent both the iteration space of a kernel and the mapping of that iteration space from a given index to the set of data elements that iteration might use: thus the dependence metadata is indexed by the kernel’s iteration space. This explicit mapping allows the compiler or runtime to optimise the program more efficiently, and improves the program structure for the developer. We argue that this form of explicit interface specification reduces the need for premature, architecture-specific optimisation. It improves program portability, supports intercomponent optimisation and enables generation of efficient data movement code. We offer the following contributions: an introduction to the concept of indexed dependence metadata as a generalisation of stream programming, a demonstration of its advantages in a component programming system, the decoupled access/execute model for C++ programs, and how indexed dependence metadata might be used to improve the programming model for GPU-based designs. Our experimental results with prototype implementations show that indexed dependence metadata supports automatic synthesis of double-buffered data movement for the Cell processor and enables aggressive loop fusion optimisations in image processing, linear algebra and multigrid application case studies

    Perfect Hash Function Generation on the GPU with RecSplit

    Minimale perfekte Hashfunktionen (MPHFs) bilden eine statische Menge S von beliebigen Schlüsseln auf die Menge der ersten |S| natürlichen Zahlen bijektiv ab, d. h., jeder Hashwert wird exakt einmal verwendet. Sie sind in vielen Anwendungen hilfreich, zum Beispiel, um Hashtabellen mit garantiert konstanter Zugriffszeit zu implementieren. MPHFs können sehr kompakt sein — weniger als 2 Bit pro Schlüssel sind möglich. Andererseits sind MPHFs nicht in der Lage zu entscheiden, ob ein gegebener Schlüssel zu S gehört. Zurzeit ist RecSplit die speichereffizienteste MPHF. RecSplit bietet verschiedene Kompromisse zwischen Platzverbrauch, Konstruktionszeit und Anfragezeit an. RecSplit kann zum Beispiel eine MPHF mit 1.56 Bits pro Schlüssel in weniger als 2 ms pro Schlüssel konstruieren. Das ist jedoch zu langsam für große Eingaben. Diese Arbeit präsentiert neue RecSplit-Implementierungen, die Multithreading, SIMD und die Leistung von GPUs nutzen, um die Konstruktionszeit zu verbessern. Gemeinsam mit unserer neuen bijection-rotation-Methode erreichen wir Beschleunigungen um Faktoren bis zu 333 für unsere SIMD-Implementierung auf einer 8-Kern CPU und bis zu 1873 für unsere GPU-Implementierung verglichen mit der originalen, sequenziellen RecSplit-Implementierung. Dadurch können wir MPHFs mit 1.56 Bits pro Schlüssel in weniger als 1.5 μs pro Schlüssel konstruieren

    Performance and power comparisons between Fermi and Cypress GPUs

    In recent years, modern graphics processing units have been widely adopted in high performance computing areas to solve large scale computation problems. The leading GPU manufacturers Nvidia and AMD have introduced series of products to the market. While sharing many similar design concepts, GPUs from these two manufacturers differ in several aspects on processor cores and the memory subsystem. In this work, we conduct a comprehensive study to characterize and compare the architectural features of Nvidia’s Fermi and AMD’s Cypress GPUs. We first investigate the performance and power consumptions of an AMD Cypress GPU. By employing a rigorous statistical model to analyze the execution behaviors of representative general-purpose GPU (GPGPU) applications, we conduct insightful investigations on the target GPU architecture. Our results demonstrate that the GPU execution throughput and the power dissipation are dependent on different architectural variables. Furthermore, we design a set of micro-benchmarks to study the power consumption features of different function units on the GPU. Based on those results, we derive instructive principles that can guide the design of power-efficient high performance computing systems. We then make the concentration shift to the Nvidia Fermi GPU and compare it with the product from AMD. Our results indicate that these two products have diverse advantages that are reflected in their performance for different sets of applications. In addition, we also compare the energy efficiencies of these two platforms since power/energy consumption is a major concern in the high performance computing system

    Reducing Cache Contention On GPUs

    The usage of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) as an application accelerator has become increasingly popular because, compared to traditional CPUs, they are more cost-effective, their highly parallel nature complements a CPU, and they are more energy efficient. With the popularity of GPUs, many GPU-based compute-intensive applications (a.k.a., GPGPUs) present significant performance improvement over traditional CPU-based implementations. Caches, which significantly improve CPU performance, are introduced to GPUs to further enhance application performance. However, the effect of caches is not significant for many cases in GPUs and even detrimental for some cases. The massive parallelism of the GPU execution model and the resulting memory accesses cause the GPU memory hierarchy to suffer from significant memory resource contention among threads. One cause of cache contention arises from column-strided memory access patterns that GPU applications commonly generate in many data-intensive applications. When such access patterns are mapped to hardware thread groups, they become memory-divergent instructions whose memory requests are not GPU hardware friendly, resulting in serialized access and performance degradation. Cache contention also arises from cache pollution caused by lines with low reuse. For the cache to be effective, a cached line must be reused before its eviction. Unfortunately, the streaming characteristic of GPGPU workloads and the massively parallel GPU execution model increase the reuse distance, or equivalently reduce reuse frequency of data. In a GPU, the pollution caused by a large reuse distance data is significant. Memory request stall is another contention factor. A stalled Load/Store (LDST) unit does not execute memory requests from any ready warps in the issue stage. This stall prevents the potential hit chances for the ready warps. This dissertation proposes three novel architectural modifications to reduce the contention: 1) contention-aware selective caching detects the memory-divergent instructions caused by the column-strided access patterns, calculates the contending cache sets and locality information and then selectively caches; 2) locality-aware selective caching dynamically calculates the reuse frequency with efficient hardware and caches based on the reuse frequency; and 3) memory request scheduling queues the memory requests from a warp issuing stage, frees the LDST unit stall and schedules items from the queue to the LDST unit by multiple probing of the cache. Through systematic experiments and comprehensive comparisons with existing state-of-the-art techniques, this dissertation demonstrates the effectiveness of our aforementioned techniques and the viability of reducing cache contention through architectural support. Finally, this dissertation suggests other promising opportunities for future research on GPU architecture
