Stochastic decomposition in discrete-time queues with generalized vacations and applications
For several specific queueing models with a vacation policy, the stationary system occupancy at the beginning of a rantdom slot is distributed as the sum of two independent random variables. One of these variables is the stationary number of customers in an equivalent queueing system with no vacations. For models in continuous time with Poissonian arrivals, this result is well-known, and referred to as stochastic decomposition, with proof provided by Fuhrmann and Cooper. For models in discrete time, this result received less attention, with no proof available to date. In this paper, we first establish a proof of the decomposition result in discrete time. When compared to the proof in continuous time, conditions for the proof in discrete time are somewhat more general. Second, we explore four different examples: non-preemptive proirity systems, slot-bound priority systems, polling systems, and fiber delay line (FDL) buffer systems. The first two examples are known results from literature that are given here as an illustration. The third is a new example, and the last one (FDL buffer systems) shows new results. It is shown that in some cases the queueing analysis can be considerably simplified using this property

Survey of traffic control schemes and error control schemes for ATM networks
Among the techniques proposed for B-ISDN transfer mode, ATM concept is considered to be the most promising transfer technique because of its flexibility and efficiency. This paper surveys and reviews a number of topics related to ATM networks. Those topics cover congestion control, provision of multiple classes of traffic, and error control. Due to the nature of ATM networks, those issues are far more challenging than in conventional networks. Sorne of the more promising solutions to those issues are surveyed, and the corresponding results on performance are summarized. Future research problems in ATM protocol aspect are also presented
Delay analysis of two batch-service queueing models with batch arrivals: Geo(X)/Geo(c)/1
In this paper, we compute the probability generating functions (PGF's) of the customer delay for two batch-service queueing models with batch arrivals. In the first model, the available server starts a new service whenever the system is not empty (without waiting to fill the capacity), while the server waits until he can serve at full capacity in the second model. Moments can then be obtained from these PGF's, through which we study and compare both systems. We pay special attention to the influence of the distribution of the arrival batch sizes. The main observation is that the difference between the two policies depends highly on this distribution. Another conclusion is that the results are considerably different as compared to Bernoulli (single) arrivals, which are frequently considered in the literature. This demonstrates the necessity of modeling the arrivals as batches
