Cram\'er-Rao Bounds for Polynomial Signal Estimation using Sensors with AR(1) Drift
We seek to characterize the estimation performance of a sensor network where
the individual sensors exhibit the phenomenon of drift, i.e., a gradual change
of the bias. Though estimation in the presence of random errors has been
extensively studied in the literature, the loss of estimation performance due
to systematic errors like drift have rarely been looked into. In this paper, we
derive closed-form Fisher Information matrix and subsequently Cram\'er-Rao
bounds (upto reasonable approximation) for the estimation accuracy of
drift-corrupted signals. We assume a polynomial time-series as the
representative signal and an autoregressive process model for the drift. When
the Markov parameter for drift \rho<1, we show that the first-order effect of
drift is asymptotically equivalent to scaling the measurement noise by an
appropriate factor. For \rho=1, i.e., when the drift is non-stationary, we show
that the constant part of a signal can only be estimated inconsistently
(non-zero asymptotic variance). Practical usage of the results are demonstrated
through the analysis of 1) networks with multiple sensors and 2) bandwidth

Target Tracking in Confined Environments with Uncertain Sensor Positions
To ensure safety in confined environments such as mines or subway tunnels, a
(wireless) sensor network can be deployed to monitor various environmental
conditions. One of its most important applications is to track personnel,
mobile equipment and vehicles. However, the state-of-the-art algorithms assume
that the positions of the sensors are perfectly known, which is not necessarily
true due to imprecise placement and/or dropping of sensors. Therefore, we
propose an automatic approach for simultaneous refinement of sensors' positions
and target tracking. We divide the considered area in a finite number of cells,
define dynamic and measurement models, and apply a discrete variant of belief
propagation which can efficiently solve this high-dimensional problem, and
handle all non-Gaussian uncertainties expected in this kind of environments.
Finally, we use ray-tracing simulation to generate an artificial mine-like
environment and generate synthetic measurement data. According to our extensive
simulation study, the proposed approach performs significantly better than
standard Bayesian target tracking and localization algorithms, and provides

Data compression techniques applied to high resolution high frame rate video technology
An investigation is presented of video data compression applied to microgravity space experiments using High Resolution High Frame Rate Video Technology (HHVT). An extensive survey of methods of video data compression, described in the open literature, was conducted. The survey examines compression methods employing digital computing. The results of the survey are presented. They include a description of each method and assessment of image degradation and video data parameters. An assessment is made of present and near term future technology for implementation of video data compression in high speed imaging system. Results of the assessment are discussed and summarized. The results of a study of a baseline HHVT video system, and approaches for implementation of video data compression, are presented. Case studies of three microgravity experiments are presented and specific compression techniques and implementations are recommended
A New SCADA Dataset for Intrusion Detection System Research
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems monitor and control industrial control systems in many industrials and economic sectors which are considered critical infrastructure. In the past, most SCADA systems were isolated from all other networks, but recently connections to corporate enterprise networks and the Internet have increased. Security concerns have risen from this new found connectivity. This thesis makes one primary contribution to researchers and industry. Two datasets have been introduced to support intrusion detection system research for SCADA systems. The datasets include network traffic captured on a gas pipeline SCADA system in Mississippi State University’s SCADA lab. IDS researchers lack a common framework to train and test proposed algorithms. This leads to an inability to properly compare IDS presented in literature and limits research progress. The datasets created for this thesis are available to be used to aid researchers in assessing the performance of SCADA IDS systems
Data Compression in Multi-Hop Large-Scale Wireless Sensor Networks
Data collection from a multi-hop large-scale outdoor WSN deployment for environmental monitoring is full of challenges due to the severe resource constraints on small battery-operated motes (e.g., bandwidth, memory, power, and computing capacity) and the highly dynamic wireless link conditions in an outdoor communication environment. We present a compressed sensing approach which can recover the sensing data at the sink with good accuracy when very few packets are collected, thus leading to a significant reduction of the network traffic and an extension of the WSN lifetime. Interplaying with the dynamic WSN routing topology, the proposed approach is efficient and simple to implement on the resource-constrained motes without motes storing of a part of random measurement matrix, as opposed to other existing compressed sensing based schemes. We provide a systematic method via machine learning to find a suitable representation basis, for the given WSN deployment and data field, which is both sparse and incoherent with the measurement matrix in the compressed sensing. We validate our approach and evaluate its performance using our real-world multi-hop WSN testbed deployment in situ in collecting the humidity and soil moisture data. The results show that our approach significantly outperforms three other compressed sensing based algorithms regarding the data recovery accuracy for the entire WSN observation field under drastically reduced communication costs. For some WSN scenarios, compressed sensing may not be applicable. Therefore we also design a generalized predictive coding framework for unified lossless and lossy data compression. In addition, we devise a novel algorithm for lossless compression to significantly improve data compression performance for variouSs data collections and applications in WSNs. Rigorous simulations show our proposed framework and compression algorithm outperform several recent popular compression algorithms for wireless sensor networks such as LEC, S-LZW and LTC using various real-world sensor data sets, demonstrating the merit of the proposed framework for unified temporal lossless and lossy data compression in WSNs
Advanced photonic and electronic systems WILGA 2016
Young Researchers Symposium WILGA on Photonics Applications and Web Engineering has been organized since 1998, two times a year. Subject area of the Wilga Symposium are advanced photonic and electronic systems in all aspects: theoretical, design and application, hardware and software, academic, scientific, research, development, commissioning and industrial, but also educational and development of research and technical staff. Each year, during the international Spring edition, the Wilga Symposium is attended by a few hundred young researchers, graduated M.Sc. students, Ph.D. students, young doctors, young research workers from the R&D institutions, universities, innovative firms, etc. Wilga, gathering through years the organization experience, has turned out to be a perfect relevant information exchange platform between young researchers from Poland with participation of international guests, all active in the research areas of electron and photon technologies, electronics, photonics, telecommunications, automation, robotics and information technology, but also technical physics. The paper summarizes the achievements of the 38th Spring Edition of 2016 WILGA Symposium, organized in Wilga Village Resort owned by Warsaw University of technology
Real-Time Monitoring and Fault Diagnostics in Roll-To-Roll Manufacturing Systems
A roll-to-roll (R2R) process is a manufacturing technique involving continuous processing of a flexible substrate as it is transferred between rotating rolls. It integrates many additive and subtractive processing techniques to produce rolls of product in an efficient and cost-effective way due to its high production rate and mass quantity. Therefore, the R2R processes have been increasingly implemented in a wide range of manufacturing industries, including traditional paper/fabric production, plastic and metal foil manufacturing, flexible electronics, thin film batteries, photovoltaics, graphene films production, etc. However, the increasing complexity of R2R processes and high demands on product quality have heightened the needs for effective real-time process monitoring and fault diagnosis in R2R manufacturing systems.
This dissertation aims at developing tools to increase system visibility without additional sensors, in order to enhance real-time monitoring, and fault diagnosis capability in R2R manufacturing systems. First, a multistage modeling method is proposed for process monitoring and quality estimation in R2R processes. Product-centric and process-centric variation propagation are introduced to characterize variation propagation throughout the system. The multistage model mainly focuses on the formulation of process-centric variation propagation, which uniquely exists in R2R processes, and the corresponding product quality measurements with both physical knowledge and sensor data analysis. Second, a nonlinear analytical redundancy method is proposed for sensor validation to ensure the accuracy of sensor measurements for process and quality control. Parity relations based on nonlinear observation matrix are formulated to characterize system dynamics and sensor measurements. Robust optimization is designed to identify the coefficient of parity relations that can tolerate a certain level of measurement noise and system disturbances. The effect of the change of operating conditions on the value of the optimal objective function – parity residuals and the optimal design variables – parity coefficients are evaluated with sensitivity analysis. Finally, a multiple model approach for anomaly detection and fault diagnosis is introduced to improve the diagnosability under different operating regimes. The growing structure multiple model system (GSMMS) is employed, which utilizes Voronoi sets to automatically partition the entire operating space into smaller operating regimes. The local model identification problem is revised by formulating it into an optimization problem based on the loss minimization framework and solving with the mini-batch stochastic gradient descent method instead of least squares algorithms. This revision to the GSMMS method expands its capability to handle the local model identification problems that cannot be solved with a closed-form solution.
The effectiveness of the models and methods are determined with testbed data from an R2R process. The results show that those proposed models and methods are effective tools to understand variation propagation in R2R processes and improve estimation accuracy of product quality by 70%, identify the health status of sensors promptly to guarantee data accuracy for modeling and decision making, and reduce false alarm rate and increase detection power under different operating conditions. Eventually, those tools developed in this thesis contribute to increase the visibility of R2R manufacturing systems, improve productivity and reduce product rejection rate.PHDMechanical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Integrated performance prediction and quality control in manufacturing systems
textPredicting the condition of a degrading dynamic system is critical for implementing successful control and designing the optimal operation and maintenance strategies throughout the lifetime of the system. In many situations, especially in manufacturing, systems experience multiple degradation cycles, failures, and maintenance events throughout their lifetimes. In such cases, historical records of sensor readings observed during the lifecycle of a machine can yield vital information about degradation patterns of the monitored machine, which can be used to formulate dynamic models for predicting its future performance. Besides the ability to predict equipment failures, another major component of cost effective and high-throughput manufacturing is tight control of product quality. Quality control is assured by taking periodic measurements of the products at various stages of production. Nevertheless, quality measurements of the product require time and are often executed on costly measurement equipment, which increases the cost of manufacturing and slows down production. One possible way to remedy this situation is to utilize the inherent link between the manufacturing equipment condition, mirrored in the readings of sensors mounted on that machine, and the quality of products coming out of it. The concept of Virtual Metrology (VM) addresses the quality control problem by using data-driven models that relate the product quality to the equipment sensors, enabling continuous estimation of the quality characteristics of the product, even when physical measurements of product quality are not available. VM can thus bring significant production benefits, including improved process control, reduced quality losses and higher productivity. In this dissertation, new methods are formulated that will combine long-term performance prediction of sensory signatures from a degrading manufacturing machine with VM quality estimation, which enables integration of predictive condition monitoring (prediction of sensory signatures) with predictive manufacturing process control (predictive VM model). The recently developed algorithm for prediction of sensory signatures is capable of predicting the system condition by comparing the similarity of the most recent performance signatures with the known degradation patterns available in the historical records. The method accomplishes the prediction of non-Gaussian and non-stationary time-series of relevant performance signatures with analytical tractability, which enables calculations of predicted signature distributions with significantly greater speeds than what can be found in literature. VM quality estimation is implemented using the recently introduced growing structure multiple model system paradigm (GSMMS), based on the use of local linear dynamic models. The concept of local models enables representation of complex, non-linear dependencies with non-Gaussian and non-stationary noise characteristics, using a locally tractable model representation. Localized modeling enables a VM that can detect situations when the VM model is not adequate and needs to be improved, which is one of the main challenges in VM. Finally, uncertainty propagation with Monte Carlo simulation is pursued in order to propagate the predicted distributions of equipment signatures through the VM model to enable prediction of distributions of the quality variables using the readily available sensor readings streaming from the monitored manufacturing machine.
