    Induced brain activity as indicator of cognitive processes: experimental-methodical analyses and algorithms for online-applications

    Die Signalverarbeitung von elektroenzephalographischen (EEG) Signalen ist ein entscheidendes Werkzeug, um die kognitiven Prozessen verstehen zu können. Beispielweise wird induzierte Hirnaktivität in mehreren Untersuchungen mit kognitiver Leistung assoziiert. Deshalb ist die Gewinnung von elektrophysiologischen Parametern grundlegend für die Charakterisierung von kognitiven Prozessen sowie von kognitiven Dysfunktionen in neurologischen Erkrankungen. Besonders bei Epilepsie treten häufig Störungen wie Gedächtnis-, oder Aufmerksamkeitsprobleme auf, zusätzlich zu Anfällen. Neurofeedback (bzw. EEG-Biofeedback) ist eine Therapiemethode, die zusätzlich zu medikamentösen- und chirurgischen Therapien bei der Behandlung vieler neurologischer Krankheiten, einschließlich Epilepsie, erfolgreich praktiziert wird. Neurofeedback wird jedoch meist dafür angewendet, eine Anfallsreduzierung zu erzielen. Dagegen wird eine Verbesserung kognitiver Fähigkeiten auf der Basis elektrophysiologischer Änderungen selten vorgesehen. Darüber hinaus sind die aktuellen Neurofeedbackstrategien für diesen Zweck ungeeignet. Der Grund dafür sind unter anderem nicht adäquate Verfahren für die Gewinnung und Quantifizierung induzierter Hirnaktivität. Unter Berücksichtigung der oben genannten Punkten wurden die kognitiven Leistungen von einer Patientengruppe (Epilepsie) und einer Probandengruppe anhand der ereignisbezogenen De-/Synchronisation (ERD/ERS) Methode untersucht. Signifikante Unterschiede wurden im Theta bzw. Alpha Band festgestellt. Diese Ergebnisse unterstützen die Verwertung von auf ERD/ERS basierten kognitiven Parametern bei Epilepsie. Anhand einer methodischen Untersuchung von dynamischen Eigenschaften wurde ein onlinefähiger ERD/ERS Algorithmus für zukünftige Neurofeedback Applikationen ausgewählt. Basierend auf dem ausgewählten Parameter wurde eine Methodik für die online Gewinnung und Quantifizierung von kognitionsbezogener induzierter Hirnaktivität entwickelt. Die dazugehörigen Prozeduren sind in Module organisiert, um die Prozessapplikabilität zu erhöhen. Mehrere Bestandteile der Methodik, einschließlich der Rolle von Elektrodenmontagen sowie die Eliminierung bzw. Reduktion der evozierten Aktivität, wurden anhand kognitiver Aufgaben evaluiert und optimiert. Die Entwicklung einer geeigneten Neurofeedback Strategie sowie die Bestätigung der psychophysiologischen Hypothese anhand einer Pilotstudie sollen Gegenstand der zukünftigen Arbeitschritte sein.Processing of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals is a key step towards understanding cognitive brain processes. Particularly, there is growing evidence that the analysis of induced brain oscillations is a powerful tool to analyze cognitive performance. Thus, the extraction of electrophysiological features characterizing not only cognitive processes but also cognitive dysfunctions by neurological diseases is fundamental. Especially in the case of epilepsy, cognitive dysfunctions such as memory or attentional problems are often present additionally to seizures. Neurofeedback (or EEG-biofeedback) is a psychological technique that, as a supplement to medication and surgical therapies, has been demonstrated to provide further improvement in many neurological diseases, including epilepsy. However, most efforts of neurofeedback have traditionally been dedicated to the reduction of seizure frequency, and little attention has been paid for improving cognitive deficits by means of specific electrophysiological changes. Furthermore, current neurofeedback approaches are not suitable for these purposes because the parameters used do not take into consideration the relationship between memory performance and event-induced brain activity. Considering all these aspects, the cognitive performance of a group of epilepsy patients and a group of healthy controls was analyzed based on the event-related de /synchronization (ERD/ERS) method. Significant differences between both populations in the theta and upper alpha bands were observed. These findings support the possible exploitation of cognitive quantitative parameters in epilepsy based on ERD/ERS. An algorithm for the online ERD/ERS calculation was selected for future neurofeedback applications, as the result of a comparative dynamic study. Subsequently, a methodology for the online extraction and quantification of cognitive-induced brain activity was developed based on the selected algorithm. The procedure is functionally organized in blocks of algorithms in order to increase applicability. Several aspects, including the role of electrode montages and the reduction or minimization of the evoked activity, were examined based on cognitive studies as part of the optimization process. Future steps should include the design of a special training paradigm as well as a pilot study for confirming the theoretical approach proposed in this work

    This reprint encompasses fourteen contributions that offer avenues towards a better understanding of complex systems in human behavior. The phenomena studied here are generally pattern formation processes that originate in social interaction and psychotherapy. Several accounts are also given of the coordination in body movements and in physiological, neuronal and linguistic processes. A common denominator of such pattern formation is that complexity and entropy of the respective systems become reduced spontaneously, which is the hallmark of self-organization. The various methodological approaches of how to model such processes are presented in some detail. Results from the various methods are systematically compared and discussed. Among these approaches are algorithms for the quantification of synchrony by cross-correlational statistics, surrogate control procedures, recurrence mapping and network models.This volume offers an informative and sophisticated resource for scholars of human change, and as well for students at advanced levels, from graduate to post-doctoral.     Characterization And Perturbation Of Functional Networks That Support Human Memory

    Episodic memory is essential to our daily lives, as it attaches meaning to the constant stream of sensory inputs to the brain. However, episodic memory often fails in a number of common neurocognitive disorders. Effective therapies remain elusive, owing to the complexity of brain networks and neural processes that support episodic encoding and retrieval. In particular, it is not understood how inter-regional communication within the brain supports memory function, though such communication may be critical to the highly integrative nature of episodic memory. To uncover the patterns of memory-related functional connectivity, we asked a large cohort of neurosurgical patients with indwelling electrodes to perform a verbal free-recall task, in which patients viewed lists of simple nouns and recalled them a short time later. As patients performed this task, we collected intracranial EEG (iEEG) from electrodes placed on the cortical surface and within the medial temporal lobe (MTL). First, we examined whole-brain functional networks that emerged during the encoding and retrieval phases of this task, using spectral methods to correlate frequency-specific signals between brain regions. We identified a dynamic network of regions that exhibited enhanced theta (3-8 Hz) connectivity during successful memory processing, whereas regions tended to desynchronize at high frequencies (30-100 Hz). Next, using only electrodes placed within the MTL, we asked whether functional coupling was also observed among this mesoscale subnetwork of highly specialized regions that play an outsize role in memory. Recapitulating our earlier findings, we noted broadly enhanced theta connectivity within the MTL, centering on the left entorhinal cortex during successful encoding operations. Finally, to determine whether such low-frequency functional connections reflect correlative or causal relations in the brain, we applied direct electrical stimulation via electrodes placed within the MTL. We found that low-frequency connections (5-13 Hz) predicted the emergence of theta activity at distant regions in the brain – particularly when stimulation occurred near white matter – indicating the potential causal relevance of iEEG-based functional connections. Taken together, these studies underscore the importance of low-frequency functional coupling to memory across spatial scales, and suggest this form of coupling indicates a causal relation between brain regions

    Team Interaction Dynamics During Collaborative Problem Solving

    This dissertation contributes an enhanced understanding of team cognition, in general, and collaborative problem solving (CPS), specifically, through an integration of methods that measure team interaction dynamics and knowledge building as it occurs during a complex CPS task. The need for better understanding CPS has risen in prominence as many organizations have increasingly worked to address complex problems requiring the combination of diverse sets of individual expertise to achieve solutions for novel problems. Towards this end, the present research drew from theoretical and empirical work on Macrocognition in Teams that describes the knowledge coordination arising from team communications during CPS. It built from this by incorporating the study of team interaction during complex collaborative cognition. Interaction between team members in such contexts has proven to be inherently dynamic and exhibiting nonlinear patterns not accounted for by extant research methods. To redress this gap, the present research drew from work in cognitive science designed to study social and team interaction as a nonlinear dynamical system. CPS was examined by studying knowledge building and interaction processes of 43 dyads working on NASA\u27s Moonbase Alpha simulation, a CPS task. Both non-verbal and verbal interaction dynamics were examined. Specifically, frame-differencing, an automated video analysis technique, was used to capture the bodily movements of participants and content coding was applied to the teams\u27 communications to characterize their CPS processes. A combination of linear (i.e., multiple regression, t-test, and time-lagged cross-correlation analysis), as well as nonlinear analytic techniques (i.e., recurrence quantification analysis; RQA) were applied. In terms of the predicted interaction dynamics, it was hypothesized that teams would exhibit synchronization in their bodily movements and complementarity in their communications and further, that teams more strongly exhibiting these forms of coordination will produce better problem solving outcomes. Results showed that teams did exhibit a pattern of bodily movements that could be characterized as synchronized, but higher synchronization was not systematically related to performance. Further, results showed that teams did exhibit communicative interaction that was complementary, but this was not predictive of better problem solving performance. Several exploratory research questions were proposed as a way of refining the application of these techniques to the investigation of CPS. Results showed that semantic code-based communications time-series and %REC and ENTROPY recurrence-based measures were most sensitive to differences in performance. Overall, this dissertation adds to the scientific body of knowledge by advancing theory and empirical knowledge on the forms of verbal and non-verbal team interaction during CPS, but future work remains to be conducted to identify the relationship between interaction dynamics and CPS performance

    How hand movements and speech tip the balance in cognitive development:A story about children, complexity, coordination, and affordances

    When someone asks us to explain something, such as how a lever or balance scale works, we spontaneously move our hands and gesture. This is also true for children. Furthermore, children use their hands to discover things and to find out how something works. Previous research has shown that children’s hand movements hereby are ahead of speech, and play a leading role in cognitive development. Explanations for this assumed that cognitive understanding takes place in one’s head, and that hand movements and speech (only) reflect this. However, cognitive understanding arises and consists of the constant interplay between (hand) movements and speech, and someone’s physical and social environment. The physical environment includes task properties, for example, and the social environment includes other people. Therefore, I focused on this constant interplay between hand movements, speech, and the environment, to better understand hand movements’ role in cognitive development. Using science and technology tasks, we found that children’s speech affects hand movements more than the other way around. During difficult tasks the coupling between hand movements and speech becomes even stronger than in easy tasks. Interim changes in task properties differently affect hand movements and speech. Collaborating children coordinate their hand movements and speech, and even their head movements together. The coupling between hand movements and speech is related to age and (school) performance. It is important that teachers attend to children’s hand movements and speech, and arrange their lessons and classrooms such that there is room for both

    The Impact of Coordination Quality on Coordination Dynamics and Team Performance: When Humans Team with Autonomy

    abstract: This increasing role of highly automated and intelligent systems as team members has started a paradigm shift from human-human teaming to Human-Autonomy Teaming (HAT). However, moving from human-human teaming to HAT is challenging. Teamwork requires skills that are often missing in robots and synthetic agents. It is possible that adding a synthetic agent as a team member may lead teams to demonstrate different coordination patterns resulting in differences in team cognition and ultimately team effectiveness. The theory of Interactive Team Cognition (ITC) emphasizes the importance of team interaction behaviors over the collection of individual knowledge. In this dissertation, Nonlinear Dynamical Methods (NDMs) were applied to capture characteristics of overall team coordination and communication behaviors. The findings supported the hypothesis that coordination stability is related to team performance in a nonlinear manner with optimal performance associated with moderate stability coupled with flexibility.     Evidence of Embodied Social Competence During Conversation in High Functioning Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

    Even high functioning children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) exhibit impairments that affect their ability to carry out and maintain effective social interactions in multiple contexts. One aspect of subtle nonverbal communication that might play a role in this impairment is the whole-body motor coordination that naturally arises between people during conversation. The current study aimed to measure the time-dependent, coordinated whole-body movements between children with ASD and a clinician during a conversational exchange using tools of nonlinear dynamics. Given the influence that subtle interpersonal coordination has on social interaction feelings, we expected there to be important associations between the dynamic motor movement measures introduced in the current study and the measures used traditionally to categorize ASD impairment (ADOS-2, joint attention and theory of mind). The study found that children with ASD coordinated their bodily movements with a clinician, that these movements were complex and that the complexity of the children’s movements matched that of the clinician’s movements. Importantly, the degree of this bodily coordination was related to higher social cognitive ability. This suggests children with ASD are embodying some degree of social competence during conversations.
