Observation and abstract behaviour in specification and implementation of state-based systems
Classical algebraic specification is an accepted framework for specification. A criticism which applies is the
fact that it is functional, not based on a notion of state as most software development and implementation languages
are. We formalise the idea of a state-based object or abstract machine using algebraic means. In contrast to similar approaches we consider dynamic logic instead of equational logic as the framework for specification and implementation. The advantage is a more expressive language allowing us to specify safety and liveness conditions. It also allows a clearer distinction of functional and state-based parts which require different treatment in order to achieve behavioural abstraction when necessary. We shall in particular focus on abstract behaviour and observation. A behavioural notion of satisfaction for state-elements is needed in order to abstract from irrelevant details of the state realisation
Searching for a Solution to Program Verification=Equation Solving in CCS
International audienceUnder non-exponential discounting, we develop a dynamic theory for stopping problems in continuous time. Our framework covers discount functions that induce decreasing impatience. Due to the inherent time inconsistency, we look for equilibrium stopping policies, formulated as fixed points of an operator. Under appropriate conditions, fixed-point iterations converge to equilibrium stopping policies. This iterative approach corresponds to the hierarchy of strategic reasoning in game theory and provides “agent-specific” results: it assigns one specific equilibrium stopping policy to each agent according to her initial behavior. In particular, it leads to a precise mathematical connection between the naive behavior and the sophisticated one. Our theory is illustrated in a real options model
Transforming ASN.1 Specifications into CafeOBJ to assist with Property Checking
The adoption of algebraic specification/formal method techniques by the
networks' research community is happening slowly but steadily. We work towards
a software environment that can translate a protocol's specification, from
Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1 - a very popular specification language
with many applications), into the powerful algebraic specification language
CafeOBJ. The resulting code can be used to check, validate and falsify critical
properties of systems, at the pre-coding stage of development. In this paper,
we introduce some key elements of ASN.1 and CafeOBJ and sketch some first steps
towards the implementation of such a tool including a case study.Comment: 8 pages, 12 figure
Bisimilarity of Open Terms in Stream GSOS
Stream GSOS is a specification format for operations and calculi on infinite
sequences. The notion of bisimilarity provides a canonical proof technique for
equivalence of closed terms in such specifications. In this paper, we focus on
open terms, which may contain variables, and which are equivalent whenever they
denote the same stream for every possible instantiation of the variables. Our
main contribution is to capture equivalence of open terms as bisimilarity on
certain Mealy machines, providing a concrete proof technique. Moreover, we
introduce an enhancement of this technique, called bisimulation up-to
substitutions, and show how to combine it with other up-to techniques to obtain
a powerful method for proving equivalence of open terms

Adaptability Checking in Multi-Level Complex Systems
A hierarchical model for multi-level adaptive systems is built on two basic
levels: a lower behavioural level B accounting for the actual behaviour of the
system and an upper structural level S describing the adaptation dynamics of
the system. The behavioural level is modelled as a state machine and the
structural level as a higher-order system whose states have associated logical
formulas (constraints) over observables of the behavioural level. S is used to
capture the global and stable features of B, by a defining set of allowed
behaviours. The adaptation semantics is such that the upper S level imposes
constraints on the lower B level, which has to adapt whenever it no longer can
satisfy them. In this context, we introduce weak and strong adaptabil- ity,
i.e. the ability of a system to adapt for some evolution paths or for all
possible evolutions, respectively. We provide a relational characterisation for
these two notions and we show that adaptability checking, i.e. deciding if a
system is weak or strong adaptable, can be reduced to a CTL model checking
problem. We apply the model and the theoretical results to the case study of
