Ontologies for the Interoperability of Heterogeneous Multi-Agent Systems in the scope of Energy and Power Systems
estudiar, experimentar y validar operaciones e interacciones competitivas,
Interoperability middleware for IIoT gateways based on international standard ontologies and standardized digital representation
Recent advances in the areas of microelectronics, information technology, and communication protocols have made the development of smaller devices with greater processing capacity and lower energy consumption. This context contributed to the growing number of physical devices in industrial environments which are interconnected and communicate via the internet, enabling concepts such as Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). These nodes have different sensors and actuators that monitor and control environment data. Several companies develop these devices, including diverse communication protocols, data structures, and IoT platforms, which leads to interoperability issues. In IoT scenarios, interoperability is the ability of two systems to communicate and share services. Therefore, communication problems can make it unfeasible to use heterogeneous devices, increasing the project’s financial cost and development time. In an industry, interoperability is related to different aspects, such as physical communication, divergent device communication protocols, and syntactical problems, referring to the distinct data structure. Developing a new standard for solving these matters may bring interoperability-related drawbacks rather than effectively solving these issues. Therefore, to mitigate interoperability problems in industrial applications, this work proposes the development of an interoperability middleware for Edge-enabled IIoT gateways based on international standards. The middleware is responsible for translating communication protocols, updating data from simulations or physical nodes to the assets’ digital representations, and storing data locally or remotely. The middleware adopts the IEEE industrial standard ontologies combined with assets’ standardized digital models. As a case study, a simulation replicates the production of a nutrient solution for agriculture, controlled by IIoT nodes. The use case consists of three devices, each equipped with at least five sensors or actuators, communicating in different communication protocols and exchanging data using diverse structures. The performance of the proposed middleware and its proposed translations algorithms were evaluated, obtaining satisfactory results for mitigating interoperable in industrial applications.

Autonomic Management of Networked Small-Medium Factories
The Chapter reports the achievements of a research project that is developing a software platform with a suite of autonomic services enabling every company in the network to move from a situation where it wastes valuable resources in struggling with its customers and suppliers, towards a rational business environment where communication becomes faster, and operation and collaboration more efficient. The ultimate objective of the project is to set-up, develop, experiment and promote the adoption of a new collaboration practice within networked factories taking advantage of the autonomic model applied to a suite of support software services
Security Management Framework for the Internet of Things
The increase in the design and development of wireless communication technologies
offers multiple opportunities for the management and control of cyber-physical systems
with connections between smart and autonomous devices, which provide the delivery
of simplified data through the use of cloud computing. Given this relationship with the
Internet of Things (IoT), it established the concept of pervasive computing that allows
any object to communicate with services, sensors, people, and objects without human
intervention. However, the rapid growth of connectivity with smart applications through
autonomous systems connected to the internet has allowed the exposure of numerous
vulnerabilities in IoT systems by malicious users.
This dissertation developed a novel ontology-based cybersecurity framework to
improve security in IoT systems using an ontological analysis to adapt appropriate
security services addressed to threats. The composition of this proposal explores
two approaches: (1) design time, which offers a dynamic method to build security
services through the application of a methodology directed to models considering
existing business processes; and (2) execution time, which involves monitoring the IoT
environment, classifying vulnerabilities and threats, and acting in the environment,
ensuring the correct adaptation of existing services.
The validation approach was used to demonstrate the feasibility of implementing the
proposed cybersecurity framework. It implies the evaluation of the ontology to offer
a qualitative evaluation based on the analysis of several criteria and also a proof of
concept implemented and tested using specific industrial scenarios. This dissertation
has been verified by adopting a methodology that follows the acceptance in the research
community through technical validation in the application of the concept in an industrial
metodologia dirigida a modelos, considerando processos empresariais existentes; e (2)

Novel processes for smart grid information exchange and knowledge representation using the IEC common information model
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. The IEC Common Information Model (CIM) is of central importance in enabling smart grid interoperability. Its continual development aims to meet the needs of the smart grid for semantic understanding and knowledge
representation for a widening domain of resources and processes. With smart grid evolution the importance of information and data management has become an increasingly pressing issue not only because far more data is being generated using modern sensing, control and measuring devices but
also because information is now becoming recognised as the ‘integral component’ that facilitates the optimal flexibility required of the smart grid. This thesis looks at the impacts of CIM implementation upon the landscape of smart grid issues and presents research from within National Grid
contributing to three key areas in support of further CIM deployment. Taking the issue of Enterprise Information Management first, an information management framework is presented for CIM deployment at National Grid. Following this the development and demonstration of a novel secure cloud
computing platform to handle such information is described. Power system application (PSA) models of the grid are partial knowledge representations of a shared reality. To develop the completeness of our understanding of this reality it is necessary to combine these representations.
The second research contribution reports on a novel methodology for a CIM-based
model repository to align PSA representations and provide a
knowledge resource for building utility business intelligence of the grid.
The third contribution addresses the need for greater integration of information relating to energy storage, an essential aspect of smart energy management. It presents the strategic rationale for integrated energy modeling and a novel extension to the existing CIM standards for modeling grid-scale energy storage. Significantly, this work has already contributed to a larger body of work on modeling Distributed Energy Resources currently under development at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in the

Service-oriented infrastructure to support the control, monitoring and management of a shop floor system
Engenharia Electrotécnica e de ComputadoresService-oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm is becoming a broadly deployed standard
for business and enterprise integration. It continuously spreads across the distinct
layers of the enterprise organization and disparate domains of application, envisioning
a unified communication solution. Service-oriented approaches are also entering the industrial automation domain in a top-down way. The recent application at device level
has a direct impact on how industrial automation deployments will evolve. Similarly
to other domains, the crescent ubiquity of smart devices is raising important lifecycle
concerns related to device control, monitoring and management. From initial setup and deployment to system lifecycle monitoring and evolution, each device needs to be taken into account and to be easily reachable.
The current work includes the specification and development of a modular, adaptive
and open infrastructure to support the control, monitoring and management of devices
and services in an industrial automation environment, such as a shop floor system. A
collection of tools and services to be comprised in this same infrastructure will also be researched and implemented. Moreover, the main implementation focuses on a SOA-based infrastructure comprising SemanticWeb concepts to enhance the process of exchanging a device in an industrial automation environment. This is done by assisting (and even automate)this task supported by service and device semantic matching whenever a device has a problem. The infrastructure was implemented and tested in an educational shop floor setup composed by a set of distributed entities each one controlled by its own SOAready
PLC. The performed tests revealed that the tasks of discovering and identifying
new devices, as well as providing assistance when a device is down offered a valuable
contribution and can increase the agility of the overall system when dealing with operation disruptions or modifications at device level
Negotiation environment to support enterprise interoperability sustainability
Dissertation to obtain the Master degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer ScienceSpecialized and diversified global markets are facing a competitiveness that keeps pushing enterprises to abandon their traditional product centrism, where basically it is enough to concentrate their efforts in very narrow specialization fields and change their methods of work relying on networks of other providers that are able to fulfill their needs towards the development of complete solutions. These new methods of work, regarding the rapid change in markets and business organizations, requires new interoperability demands and complexity levels, from connection and syntax-oriented exchanges to semantic and model-oriented knowledge, which becomes very difficult for enterprises to cope with the pace of change. This dissertation proposes the implementation of a framework, based on agents and rules, to achieve solid and stable integration of solutions, via the use of a strong and formal negotiation mechanism, which will be the basis for increasing the enterprise interoperability in the supply chain for the development of solutions.European Commission through the funding of the FP7 ENSEMBLE, UNITE, MSEE and IMAGINE project
