Effects of calcium channel blockers on coronary vasoconstriction induced by endothelin-1 in closed chest pigs

AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the effects of endothelin-1 on the coronary vascular bed of closed chest pigs. Endothelin-1 (3 to 30 pmol/kg body weight) was selectively administered into the left anterior descending coronary artery. Coronary blood flow and epicardial vessel diameter were measured by quantitative arteriography. Arterial pressure increased after a 30 pmol/kg dose and heart rate was not changed.Coronary blood flow and vessel diameter of the left anterior descending artery significantly decreased by 74% and 32%, respectively (p < 0.01 versus control) after the 30 pmol/kg dose, whereas these variables modestly decreased in the left circumflex artery. Endothelin-1 in doses of 10 to 30 pmol/kg produced electrocardiographic ST segment elevation associated with decreased oxygen saturation of coronary sinus venous blood. Endothelin-induced coronary vasoconstriction was significantly inhibited after treatment with intravenous diltiazem (0.2 mg/kg, n = 6) or nifedipine (0.1 mg/kg, n = 5), but not after vehicle administration (n = 4).This study demonstrates that intracoronary administration of endothelin-1 causes significant myocardial ischemia through coronary vasoconstriction, which is inhibited by a calcium channel blocker. The data suggest that calcium influx into the smooth muscle cells appears to be involved at least in part in the mechanism of endothelin-induced coronary vasoconstriction in vivo

Apitherapy – the medical use of bee products

Introduction: Bee products have been used by man for centuries. However, their therapeutic options are not fully understood. Aim of the study: To review research on the possibilities of using the medicinal properties of bee products. Material and method: Standard criteria were used to review literature data. Search for articles in the PubMed database was carried out using the following keywords: apitherapy, honey, bee venom, propolis, royal jelly, bee pollen. Description: Apitherapy is a healing method known to mankind since the oldest times. Due to the diverse composition, substances produced by bees show a number of activities, which include Antioxidant, immunomodulatory, antibacterial and anticancer effect. Thanks to numerous mechanisms, they have a beneficial effect on wound healing, cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders. Summary: Numerous properties and a wide range of activity of each bee product brings the possibility of using them in the therapy of many diseases

Propolis Standardized Extract (EPP-AF®), an Innovative Chemically and Biologically Reproducible Pharmaceutical Compound for Treating Wounds

The aim of this study was to develop a formulation, containing the propolis standardized extract (EPP-AF®), which can assist in the healing of skin lesions. To achieve this objective the antimicrobial activity and chemical composition of the propolis extract was determined. The final product was subjected to in vitro and in vivo pre-clinical evaluation. The broth macrodilution method was used to determine the antimicrobial activity of the extracts and formulations against the microorganisms most commonly found in burns, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Wistar rats with puncture wounded skin were used to evaluate the wound healing properties of propolis. The results of chemical and biological characterization demonstrated the batch-to-batch reproducibility of the standardized extract which is an unprecedented result. The antimicrobial and wound healing activity of the pharmaceutical studied showed the best results when samples contain 3.6% propolis, suggesting that this is the most promising composition

The use of symbolic computation in nonlinear control: is it viable?

To aid in the analysis and design of nonlinear control systems the NONlinCON package (an acronym for Nonlinear Control) has been developed. This paper addresses the usefulness of the NONlinCON package as a self contained tool in the symbolic analysis and design of nonlinear control systems, as a replacement and/or complement for numerical tools, and as a substitute for analytical (paper and pencil) work. The symbolic computation program MAPLE is used as a computing substrate for NONlinCON. To assess the viability of this tool several algorithms available for analysis and design are implemented in the package, and applied to examples of textbook problems with published solutions and also to a larger scale problem. It is concluded that, at the present state, symbolic computation is a viable approach for straightforward textbook problems, but not grown up enough to tackle larger problem

Algorithms of the interpolation by multivariate polynomials

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá algoritmy vícerozměrné interpolace. V první části je studován problém interpolace nad rovinou. Dále je uvedeno zobecnění Lagrangeovy interpolace pro případ více neurčitých. Diskutujeme zde také stupeň polynomu pro libovolné pole. Součástí této práce je i funkční programový balík v prostředí Mathematica, který řeší vícerozměrnou interpolaci nad libovolným polem.This bachelor's work concerns to algorithms of the multivariate interpolation. The problem of the interpolation over the plane is studied in the first part of this work. In the next section, the multivariate Lagrange interpolation is described and the polynomial degree is discussed. A Mathematica program package was developed, by this, the multivariate interpolation over an arbitrary field can be solved.
