    Toward composing variable structure models and their interfaces: a case of intensional coupling definitions

    In this thesis, we investigate a combination of traditional component-based and variable structure modeling. The focus is on a structural consistent specification of couplings in modular, hierarchical models with a variable structure. For this, we exploitintensional definitions, as known from logic, and introduce a novel intensional coupling definition, which allows a concise yet expressive specification of complex communication and interaction patterns in static as well as variable structure models, without the need to worryabout structural consistency.In der Arbeit untersuchen wir ein Zusammenbringen von klassischer komponenten-basierter und variabler Strukturmodellierung. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf der Spezifikation von strukturkonsistenten Kopplungen in modular-hierarchischen Modellen mit einer variablen Struktur. Dafür nutzen wir intensionale Definitionen, wie sie aus der Logik bekannt sind, und führen ein neuartiges Konzept von intensionalen Kopplungen ein, welches kompakte gleichzeitig ausdrucksstarke Spezifikationen von komplexen Kommunikations- und Interaktionsmuster in statischen und variablen Strukturmodellen erlaubt

    The 2015 Annual Technical Report for Kentucky consolidates reporting requirements for the Section 104(b) base grant award into a single document that includes: 1) a synopsis of each student research enhancement project that was conducted during the period, 2) citations for related publications, reports, and presentations, 3) a description of information transfer activities, 4) a summary of student support during the reporting period, and 5) notable awards and achievements during the year. No funds were requested for general program administration activities. However, travel funds were provided to support the participation of the director and associate director in the annual meeting of the National Institutes for Water Resources in Washington, DC from February 8-10, 2016

    Network Simulation Cradle

    This thesis proposes the use of real world network stacks instead of protocol abstractions in a network simulator, bringing the actual code used in computer systems inside the simulator and allowing for greater simulation accuracy. Specifically, a framework called the Network Simulation Cradle is created that supports the kernel source code from FreeBSD, OpenBSD and Linux to make the network stacks from these systems available to the popular network simulator ns-2. Simulating with these real world network stacks reveals situations where the result differs significantly from ns-2's TCP models. The simulated network stacks are able to be directly compared to the same operating system running on an actual machine, making validation simple. When measuring the packet traces produced on a test network and in simulation the results are nearly identical, a level of accuracy previously unavailable using traditional TCP simulation models. The results of simulations run comparing ns-2 TCP models and our framework are presented in this dissertation along with validation studies of our framework showing how closely simulation resembles real world computers. Using real world stacks to simulate TCP is a complementary approach to using the existing TCP models and provides an extra level of validation. This way of simulating TCP and other protocols provides the network researcher or engineer new possibilities. One example is using the framework as a protocol development environment, which allows user-level development of protocols with a standard set of reproducible tests, the ability to test scenarios which are costly or impossible to build physically, and being able to trace and debug the protocol code without affecting results

    Development of a Wireless Real-Time Productivity Measurement System for Rapid Bridge Replacement

    Increased attention has been paid to rapid bridge replacement, one of the critical components of the nation’s transportation network, since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. To enhance the capability of rapid replacement of damaged bridges after extreme events, a prototype wireless real-time productivity measurement system has been developed. The developed system has a potential not only to improve the accuracy of construction schedule but also to strengthen the communication and coordination among parties involved in the replacement process after extreme events by providing accurate productivity information in real time. To validate the developed system, field experiments were conducted at three construction sites. Results of data analyses indicate that it is feasible to use the developed system to measure on-site productivity in real time; and productivity measurements were accurate and could be shared among all parties involved in the replacement process

    A multi-objective evolutionary approach to simulation-based optimisation of real-world problems.

    This thesis presents a novel evolutionary optimisation algorithm that can improve the quality of solutions in simulation-based optimisation. Simulation-based optimisation is the process of finding optimal parameter settings without explicitly examining each possible configuration of settings. An optimisation algorithm generates potential configurations and sends these to the simulation, which acts as an evaluation function. The evaluation results are used to refine the optimisation such that it eventually returns a high-quality solution. The algorithm described in this thesis integrates multi-objective optimisation, parallelism, surrogate usage, and noise handling in a unique way for dealing with simulation-based optimisation problems incurred by these characteristics. In order to handle multiple, conflicting optimisation objectives, the algorithm uses a Pareto approach in which the set of best trade-off solutions is searched for and presented to the user. The algorithm supports a high degree of parallelism by adopting an asynchronous master-slave parallelisation model in combination with an incremental population refinement strategy. A surrogate evaluation function is adopted in the algorithm to quickly identify promising candidate solutions and filter out poor ones. A novel technique based on inheritance is used to compensate for the uncertainties associated with the approximative surrogate evaluations. Furthermore, a novel technique for multi-objective problems that effectively reduces noise by adopting a dynamic procedure in resampling solutions is used to tackle the problem of real-world unpredictability (noise). The proposed algorithm is evaluated on benchmark problems and two complex real-world problems of manufacturing optimisation. The first real-world problem concerns the optimisation of a production cell at Volvo Aero, while the second one concerns the optimisation of a camshaft machining line at Volvo Cars Engine. The results from the optimisations show that the algorithm finds better solutions for all the problems considered than existing, similar algorithms. The new techniques for dealing with surrogate imprecision and noise used in the algorithm are identified as key reasons for the good performance.University of Skövde Knowledge Foundation Swede

    Development of a Wireless Real-Time Productivity Measurement System for Rapid Construction Operations

    Existing on-site construction productivity measurement methods have some common limitations, such as the inability to provide data to engineers and project managers for real-time analyses and the difficulties of sharing data among participants involved in construction operations. To address these shortfalls, a wireless real-time productivity measurement (WRITE) system was developed. To validate the system, field experiments were conducted at highway and bridge construction sites. Statistical methods, such as the hypothesis test, the normality test, the paired t-test, and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, were conducted to systematically analyze the experimental data. Results of the statistical analyses proved that the developed system generated identical productivity measurements compared to the stopwatch method, which is considered the classic productivity measurement method. In addition, a procedure to improve the on-site construction using the WRITE System and benchmarking technique was developed. The WRITE System has a potential to strengthen communication and coordination among participants involved in the infrastructure construction process by providing more accurate productivity information in real time

Tocher, 1963). Estás técnicas han evolucionado de una manera extraordinaria y hoy en día están plenamente implementadas en diversos campos de actividad. Las instalaciones portuarias no han escapado de esta tendencia, especialmente las dedicadas al tráfico de contenedores. Efectivamente, las características intrínsecas de este sector económico, le hacen un candidato idóneo para la implementación de modelos de simulación con propósitos y alcances muy diversos. No existe, sin embargo y hasta lo que conocemos, un trabajo científico que compile y analice pormenorizadamente tanto la historia como la evolución de simulación en ambientes portuarios, ayudando a clasificar los mismos y determinar cómo estos pueden ayudar en el análisis económico de estas instalaciones y en la formulación de las oportunas estrategias empresariales. Efectivamente, as características intrínsecas deste sector económico, fanlle un candidato idóneo para a implementación de modelos de simulación con propósitos e alcances moi variados. Con todo, e ata o que coñecemos, non existe un traballo científico que compila e analiza de forma detallada tanto a historia como a evolución da simulación en estes ambientes portuarios, clasificando os mesmos e determinando como estes poden axudar na análise económica destas instalacións e na formulación das oportunas estratexias empresariais. Este é o último obxectivo da presente tese doutoral.[Abstract] Simulation, to the extend that we understand it nowadays, began in the middle of the 20th century; first with the appearance of the computer and the development of the Monte Carlo method, and later with the development of the first specific purpose simulator known as GPS developed by Geoffrey Gordon in IBM. This author published the first full text devoted to this subject “The Art of Simulation” in 1963. These techniques have evolved in an extraordinary way and nowadays they are fully implemented in different fields of activity. Port facilities have not escaped this trend, especially those dedicated to container traffic. Indeed, the intrinsic characteristics of this economic sector, make it a suitable candidate for the implementation of simulation with very different purposes and scope. However, to the best of our knowelegde, there is not a scientific work that compiles and analyzes in detail both, the history and the evolution of simulation in port environments, contributing to classify them and determine how they can help in the economic analysis of these facilities and in the formulation of different business strategies. This is the ultimate goal of this doctoral thesis
