    A Review of Model Predictive Controls Applied to Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems

    Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADASs) are currently gaining particular attention in the automotive field, as enablers for vehicle energy consumption, safety, and comfort enhancement. Compelling evidence is in fact provided by the variety of related studies that are to be found in the literature. Moreover, considering the actual technology readiness, larger opportunities might stem from the combination of ADASs and vehicle connectivity. Nevertheless, the definition of a suitable control system is not often trivial, especially when dealing with multiple-objective problems and dynamics complexity. In this scenario, even though diverse strategies are possible (e.g., Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy, Rule-based strategy, etc.), the Model Predictive Control (MPC) turned out to be among the most effective ones in fulfilling the aforementioned tasks. Hence, the proposed study is meant to produce a comprehensive review of MPCs applied to scenarios where ADASs are exploited and aims at providing the guidelines to select the appropriate strategy. More precisely, particular attention is paid to the prediction phase, the objective function formulation and the constraints. Subsequently, the interest is shifted to the combination of ADASs and vehicle connectivity to assess for how such information is handled by the MPC. The main results from the literature are presented and discussed, along with the integration of MPC in the optimal management of higher level connection and automation. Current gaps and challenges are addressed to, so as to possibly provide hints on future developments

    Survey of smart parking systems

    The large number of vehicles constantly seeking access to congested areas in cities means that finding a public parking place is often difficult and causes problems for drivers and citizens alike. In this context, strategies that guide vehicles from one point to another, looking for the most optimal path, are needed. Most contributions in the literature are routing strategies that take into account different criteria to select the optimal route required to find a parking space. This paper aims to identify the types of smart parking systems (SPS) that are available today, as well as investigate the kinds of vehicle detection techniques (VDT) they have and the algorithms or other methods they employ, in order to analyze where the development of these systems is at today. To do this, a survey of 274 publications from January 2012 to December 2019 was conducted. The survey considered four principal features: SPS types reported in the literature, the kinds of VDT used in these SPS, the algorithms or methods they implement, and the stage of development at which they are. Based on a search and extraction of results methodology, this work was able to effectively obtain the current state of the research area. In addition, the exhaustive study of the studies analyzed allowed for a discussion to be established concerning the main difficulties, as well as the gaps and open problems detected for the SPS.     A Short History of Transport in Japan from Ancient Times to the Present is a unique study: the first by a Western scholar to place the long-term development of Japanese infrastructure alongside an analysis of its evolving political economy. Drawing from New Institutional Economics, Black offers an historically informed critique of contemporary planning using the example of Japan’s historical institutions, their particular biases, and the power they have exerted over national and local transport, to identify how reformed institutional arrangements might develop more sustainable and equitable transport services.     A Bandwidth Control Arbitration for SoC Interconnections Performing Applications With Task Dependencies

    Current System-on-Chips (SoCs) execute applications with task dependency that compete for shared resources such as buses, memories, and accelerators. In such a structure, the arbitration policy becomes a critical part of the system to guarantee access and bandwidth suitable for the competing applications. Some strategies proposed in the literature to cope with these issues are Round-Robin, Weighted Round-Robin, Lottery, Time Division Access Multiplexing (TDMA), and combinations. However, a fine-grained bandwidth control arbitration policy is missing from the literature. We propose an innovative arbitration policy based on opportunistic access and a supervised utilization of the bus in terms of transmitted flits (transmission units) that settle the access and fine-grained control. In our proposal, every competing element has a budget. Opportunistic access grants the bus to request even if the component has spent all its flits. Supervised debt accounts a record for every transmitted flit when it has no flits to spend. Our proposal applies to interconnection systems such as buses, switches, and routers. The presented approach achieves deadlock-free behavior even with task dependency applications in the scenarios analyzed through cycle-accurate simulation models. The synergy between opportunistic and supervised debt techniques outperforms Lottery, TDMA, and Weighted Round-Robin in terms of bandwidth control in the experimental studies performed

    Quality Assessment Methods for Textual Conversational Interfaces: A Multivocal Literature Review

    The evaluation and assessment of conversational interfaces is a complex task since such software products are challenging to validate through traditional testing approaches. We conducted a systematic Multivocal Literature Review (MLR), on five different literature sources, to provide a view on quality attributes, evaluation frameworks, and evaluation datasets proposed to provide aid to the researchers and practitioners of the field. We came up with a final pool of 118 contributions, including grey (35) and white literature (83). We categorized 123 different quality attributes and metrics under ten different categories and four macro-categories: Relational, Conversational, User-Centered and Quantitative attributes. While Relational and Conversational attributes are most commonly explored by the scientific literature, we testified a predominance of User-Centered Attributes in industrial literature. We also identified five different academic frameworks/tools to automatically compute sets of metrics, and 28 datasets (subdivided into seven different categories based on the type of data contained) that can produce conversations for the evaluation of conversational interfaces. Our analysis of literature highlights that a high number of qualitative and quantitative attributes are available in the literature to evaluate the performance of conversational interfaces. Our categorization can serve as a valid entry point for researchers and practitioners to select the proper functional and non-functional aspects to be evaluated for their products

    Theoretical model of trust-based relationships in building information modelling supply chain for construction projects

    The structure of relationships among project participants has a significant impact on trust development, while the number of participants involved in the relationship increases the complexity of trust. Hence, it becomes inappropriate to generalise the existing dimension and components of trustbased relationships to trust-based relationships among the building information modelling (BIM) supply chain members because of the multiple structures of relationship and the numerous interpersonal and inter-organisations that participate on BIM-based construction projects. This article investigates the nature of trust-based relationships among the BIM supply chain members and establishes whether the requirements of  the BIM process influence trust-based relationships among the BIM supply chain members. A five-stage PRISMA was adopted for systematic reviews and meta analysis. The systematic review enabled the development of a theoretical model of trustbased relationships in BIM supply chain which was subjected to meta-analysis for validation. The findings revealed that trust-based relationships among the BIM supply chain members entail trusting and trustworthy behaviours, positive expectations, and positive reputations, under which twenty-seven components were identified and classified appropriately. The article concludes that the nature of trustbased relationships among the BIM supply chain members, as influenced by the requirements of the BIM process, can be explained as trusting and trustworthy behaviours, positive expectations, and positive reputations. The article advances the understanding of trust-based relationships among the BIM supply chain members and recommends a first-hand investigation into the nature of trust-based relationships among the BIM supply chain members in future studies.&nbsp
