    Proactive Mechanisms for Video-on-Demand Content Delivery

    Video delivery over the Internet is the dominant source of network load all over the world. Especially VoD streaming services such as YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Video have propelled the proliferation of VoD in many peoples' everyday life. VoD allows watching video from a large quantity of content at any time and on a multitude of devices, including smart TVs, laptops, and smartphones. Studies show that many people under the age of 32 grew up with VoD services and have never subscribed to a traditional cable TV service. This shift in video consumption behavior is continuing with an ever-growing number of users. satisfy this large demand, VoD service providers usually rely on CDN, which make VoD streaming scalable by operating a geographically distributed network of several hundreds of thousands of servers. Thereby, they deliver content from locations close to the users, which keeps traffic local and enables a fast playback start. CDN experience heavy utilization during the day and are usually reactive to the user demand, which is not optimal as it leads to expensive over-provisioning, to cope with traffic peaks, and overreacting content eviction that decreases the CDN's performance. However, to sustain future VoD streaming projections with hundreds of millions of users, new approaches are required to increase the content delivery efficiency. To this end, this thesis identifies three key research areas that have the potential to address the future demand for VoD content. Our first contribution is the design of vFetch, a privacy-preserving prefetching mechanism for mobile devices. It focuses explicitly on OTT VoD providers such as YouTube. vFetch learns the user interest towards different content channels and uses these insights to prefetch content on a user terminal. To do so, it continually monitors the user behavior and the device's mobile connectivity pattern, to allow for resource-efficient download scheduling. Thereby, vFetch illustrates how personalized prefetching can reduce the mobile data volume and alleviate mobile networks by offloading peak-hour traffic. Our second contribution focuses on proactive in-network caching. To this end, we present the design of the ProCache mechanism that divides the available cache storage concerning separate content categories. Thus, the available storage is allocated to these divisions based on their contribution to the overall cache efficiency. We propose a general work-flow that emphasizes multiple categories of a mixed content workload in addition to a work-flow tailored for music video content, the dominant traffic source on YouTube. Thereby, ProCache shows how content-awareness can contribute to efficient in-network caching. Our third contribution targets the application of multicast for VoD scenarios. Many users request popular VoD content with only small differences in their playback start time which offers a potential for multicast. Therefore, we present the design of the VoDCast mechanism that leverages this potential to multicast parts of popular VoD content. Thereby, VoDCast illustrates how ISP can collaborate with CDN to coordinate on content that should be delivered by ISP-internal multicast

    Popularity-based video caching techniques for cache-enabled networks: a survey

    The proliferation of the mobile Internet and connected devices, which offer a variety of services at different levels of performance is a major challenge for the fifth generation of wireless networks and beyond. Innovative solutions are needed to leverage recent advances in machine storage/memory, context awareness, and edge computing. Cache-enabled networks and techniques such as edge caching are envisioned to reduce content delivery times and traffic congestion in wireless networks. Only a few contents are popular, accounting for the majority of viewers, so caching them reduces the latency and download time. However, given the dynamic nature of user behavior, the integration of popularity prediction into caching is of paramount importance to better network utilization and user satisfaction. In this paper, we first present an overview of caching in wireless networks and then provide a detailed comparison of traditional and popularity-based caching. We discuss the attributes of videos and the evaluation criteria of caching policies. We summarize some of the recent work on proactive caching, focusing on prediction strategies. Finally, we provide insight into the potential opportunities and challenges as well as some open research problems enable the realization of efficient deployment of popularity-based caching as part of the next-generation mobile networks

    Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective. The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines. From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research

    Semantic Federation of Musical and Music-Related Information for Establishing a Personal Music Knowledge Base

    Music is perceived and described very subjectively by every individual. Nowadays, people often get lost in their steadily growing, multi-placed, digital music collection. Existing music player and management applications get in trouble when dealing with poor metadata that is predominant in personal music collections. There are several music information services available that assist users by providing tools for precisely organising their music collection, or for presenting them new insights into their own music library and listening habits. However, it is still not the case that music consumers can seamlessly interact with all these auxiliary services directly from the place where they access their music individually. To profit from the manifold music and music-related knowledge that is or can be available via various information services, this information has to be gathered up, semantically federated, and integrated into a uniform knowledge base that can personalised represent this data in an appropriate visualisation to the users. This personalised semantic aggregation of music metadata from several sources is the gist of this thesis. The outlined solution particularly concentrates on users’ needs regarding music collection management which can strongly alternate between single human beings. The author’s proposal, the personal music knowledge base (PMKB), consists of a client-server architecture with uniform communication endpoints and an ontological knowledge representation model format that is able to represent the versatile information of its use cases. The PMKB concept is appropriate to cover the complete information flow life cycle, including the processes of user account initialisation, information service choice, individual information extraction, and proactive update notification. The PMKB implementation makes use of SemanticWeb technologies. Particularly the knowledge representation part of the PMKB vision is explained in this work. Several new Semantic Web ontologies are defined or existing ones are massively modified to meet the requirements of a personalised semantic federation of music and music-related data for managing personal music collections. The outcome is, amongst others, • a new vocabulary for describing the play back domain, • another one for representing information service categorisations and quality ratings, and • one that unites the beneficial parts of the existing advanced user modelling ontologies. The introduced vocabularies can be perfectly utilised in conjunction with the existing Music Ontology framework. Some RDFizers that also make use of the outlined ontologies in their mapping definitions, illustrate the fitness in practise of these specifications. A social evaluation method is applied to carry out an examination dealing with the reutilisation, application and feedback of the vocabularies that are explained in this work. This analysis shows that it is a good practise to properly publish Semantic Web ontologies with the help of some Linked Data principles and further basic SEO techniques to easily reach the searching audience, to avoid duplicates of such KR specifications, and, last but not least, to directly establish a \"shared understanding\". Due to their project-independence, the proposed vocabularies can be deployed in every knowledge representation model that needs their knowledge representation capacities.     Media Connector : a gestalt media sharing system

    Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Program in Media Arts and Sciences, 2002.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 104-109).Our desire to have common experiences with other people leads us to share media such as photographs and music. With computer networks as the media delivery system we create new opportunities for recording media utilization and ownership. Using traditional and responsive media we explore systems that enable enhanced shared experiences through modeling groups of users. A series of prototypes built with an experimental framework, MediaConnector, help us document observations and behaviors of participants. MediaConnector is a peer-to-peer media-sharing framework that allows people to develop new peer-to-peer media sharing application. Through engendering each node with its own historical audit trail we can take a crawler approach and dynamically build group profiles and perform trend analysis. Theoretical and practical work that leads to the final framework design is discussed. In particular experiments with GPS enabled cameras that explore metadata interrelationships, networked tables to share photos and two construction tests of the MediaConnector framework in dynamic group level personalization of television and audio content. It is intended that a "constructionist" approach together with new behavioral analysis will foster new and novel sharing applications to emerge.     Over-the-Top (OTT) Networks\u27 Influence on Shared Cultural Memory

    The digital landscape underwent a profound transformation in the Over-The-Top (OTT) network era, significantly altering media consumption. This study delved into the intricate and multifaceted impact of OTT networks on society, communication theory, and socio-cultural traditions, specifically emphasizing their influence on shared cultural memory. The research was rooted in a robust methodology that combined a Qualtrics online survey disseminated across various social media platforms and in-depth interviews with 25 carefully selected participants. This rigorous approach aimed to shed light on the profound influence of OTT networks on shared cultural memory while investigating how these platforms shaped perceptions, beliefs, attitudes, and values. The findings revealed the ascendant role of OTT networks in shaping shared cultural memory, exerting their influence on individual and collective memories, and fundamentally altering conventional paradigms of media communication. Within this landscape, the pivotal significance of content quality, viewer preferences, and the overarching theme of accessibility emerged as driving forces behind the widespread adoption of OTT services. This study shed light on how OTT networks revolutionized contemporary media consumption, impacted communication theory, and reshaped socio-cultural traditions. It underscored the need for ongoing research to fully grasp the profound implications of this digital revolution in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
