    The Effect Of Hot Spots On The Performance Of Mesh--Based Networks

    Direct network performance is affected by different design parameters which include number of virtual channels, number of ports, routing algorithm, switching technique, deadlock handling technique, packet size, and buffer size. Another factor that affects network performance is the traffic pattern. In this thesis, we study the effect of hotspot traffic on system performance. Specifically, we study the effect of hotspot factor, hotspot number, and hot spot location on the performance of mesh-based networks. Simulations are run on two network topologies, both the mesh and torus. We pay more attention to meshes because they are widely used in commercial machines. Comparisons between oblivious wormhole switching and chaotic packet switching are reported. Overall packet switching proved to be more efficient in terms of throughput when compared to wormhole switching. In the case of uniform random traffic, it is shown that the differences between chaotic and oblivious routing are indistinguishable. Networks with low number of hotspots show better performance. As the number of hotspots increases network latency tends to increase. It is shown that when the hotspot factor increases, performance of packet switching is better than that of wormhole switching. It is also shown that the location of hotspots affects network performance particularly with the oblivious routers since their achieved latencies proved to be more vulnerable to changes in the hotspot location. It is also shown that the smaller the size of the network the earlier network saturation occurs. Further, it is shown that the chaos router’s adaptivity is useful in this case. Finally, for tori, performance is not greatly affected by hotspot presence. This is mostly due to the symmetric nature of tori

    Design and analysis of a 3-dimensional cluster multicomputer architecture using optical interconnection for petaFLOP computing

    In this dissertation, the design and analyses of an extremely scalable distributed multicomputer architecture, using optical interconnects, that has the potential to deliver in the order of petaFLOP performance is presented in detail. The design takes advantage of optical technologies, harnessing the features inherent in optics, to produce a 3D stack that implements efficiently a large, fully connected system of nodes forming a true 3D architecture. To adopt optics in large-scale multiprocessor cluster systems, efficient routing and scheduling techniques are needed. To this end, novel self-routing strategies for all-optical packet switched networks and on-line scheduling methods that can result in collision free communication and achieve real time operation in high-speed multiprocessor systems are proposed. The system is designed to allow failed/faulty nodes to stay in place without appreciable performance degradation. The approach is to develop a dynamic communication environment that will be able to effectively adapt and evolve with a high density of missing units or nodes. A joint CPU/bandwidth controller that maximizes the resource allocation in this dynamic computing environment is introduced with an objective to optimize the distributed cluster architecture, preventing performance/system degradation in the presence of failed/faulty nodes. A thorough analysis, feasibility study and description of the characteristics of a 3-Dimensional multicomputer system capable of achieving 100 teraFLOP performance is discussed in detail. Included in this dissertation is throughput analysis of the routing schemes, using methods from discrete-time queuing systems and computer simulation results for the different proposed algorithms. A prototype of the 3D architecture proposed is built and a test bed developed to obtain experimental results to further prove the feasibility of the design, validate initial assumptions, algorithms, simulations and the optimized distributed resource allocation scheme. Finally, as a prelude to further research, an efficient data routing strategy for highly scalable distributed mobile multiprocessor networks is introduced

    NoC-based Architectures for Real-Time Applications : Performance Analysis and Design Space Exploration

    Monoprocessor architectures have reached their limits in regard to the computing power they offer vs the needs of modern systems. Although multicore architectures partially mitigate this limitation and are commonly used nowadays, they usually rely on intrinsically non-scalable buses to interconnect the cores. The manycore paradigm was proposed to tackle the scalability issue of bus-based multicore processors. It can scale up to hundreds of processing elements (PEs) on a single chip, by organizing them into computing tiles (holding one or several PEs). Intercore communication is usually done using a Network-on-Chip (NoC) that consists of interconnected onchip routers allowing communication between tiles. However, manycore architectures raise numerous challenges, particularly for real-time applications. First, NoC-based communication tends to generate complex blocking patterns when congestion occurs, which complicates the analysis, since computing accurate worst-case delays becomes difficult. Second, running many applications on large Systems-on-Chip such as manycore architectures makes system design particularly crucial and complex. On one hand, it complicates Design Space Exploration, as it multiplies the implementation alternatives that will guarantee the desired functionalities. On the other hand, once a hardware architecture is chosen, mapping the tasks of all applications on the platform is a hard problem, and finding an optimal solution in a reasonable amount of time is not always possible. Therefore, our first contributions address the need for computing tight worst-case delay bounds in wormhole NoCs. We first propose a buffer-aware worst-case timing analysis (BATA) to derive upper bounds on the worst-case end-to-end delays of constant-bit rate data flows transmitted over a NoC on a manycore architecture. We then extend BATA to cover a wider range of traffic types, including bursty traffic flows, and heterogeneous architectures. The introduced method is called G-BATA for Graph-based BATA. In addition to covering a wider range of assumptions, G-BATA improves the computation time; thus increases the scalability of the method. In a second part, we develop a method addressing design and mapping for applications with real-time constraints on manycore platforms. It combines model-based engineering tools (TTool) and simulation with our analytical verification technique (G-BATA) and tools (WoPANets) to provide an efficient design space exploration framework. Finally, we validate our contributions on (a) a serie of experiments on a physical platform and (b) two case studies taken from the real world: an autonomous vehicle control application, and a 5G signal decoder applicatio

    dissertationOver the last decade, cyber-physical systems (CPSs) have seen significant applications in many safety-critical areas, such as autonomous automotive systems, automatic pilot avionics, wireless sensor networks, etc. A Cps uses networked embedded computers to monitor and control physical processes. The motivating example for this dissertation is the use of fault- tolerant routing protocol for a Network-on-Chip (NoC) architecture that connects electronic control units (Ecus) to regulate sensors and actuators in a vehicle. With a network allowing Ecus to communicate with each other, it is possible for them to share processing power to improve performance. In addition, networked Ecus enable flexible mapping to physical processes (e.g., sensors, actuators), which increases resilience to Ecu failures by reassigning physical processes to spare Ecus. For the on-chip routing protocol, the ability to tolerate network faults is important for hardware reconfiguration to maintain the normal operation of a system. Adding a fault-tolerance feature in a routing protocol, however, increases its design complexity, making it prone to many functional problems. Formal verification techniques are therefore needed to verify its correctness. This dissertation proposes a link-fault-tolerant, multiflit wormhole routing algorithm, and its formal modeling and verification using two different methodologies. An improvement upon the previously published fault-tolerant routing algorithm, a link-fault routing algorithm is proposed to relax the unrealistic node-fault assumptions of these algorithms, while avoiding deadlock conservatively by appropriately dropping network packets. This routing algorithm, together with its routing architecture, is then modeled in a process-algebra language LNT, and compositional verification techniques are used to verify its key functional properties. As a comparison, it is modeled using channel-level VHDL which is compiled to labeled Petri-nets (LPNs). Algorithms for a partial order reduction method on LPNs are given. An optimal result is obtained from heuristics that trace back on LPNs to find causally related enabled predecessor transitions. Key observations are made from the comparison between these two verification methodologies

    Non-minimal adaptive routing for efficient interconnection networks

    RESUMEN: La red de interconexión es un concepto clave de los sistemas de computación paralelos. El primer aspecto que define una red de interconexión es su topología. Habitualmente, las redes escalables y eficientes en términos de coste y consumo energético tienen bajo diámetro y se basan en topologías que encaran el límite de Moore y en las que no hay diversidad de caminos mínimos. Una vez definida la topología, quedando implícitamente definidos los límites de rendimiento de la red, es necesario diseñar un algoritmo de enrutamiento que se acerque lo máximo posible a esos límites y debido a la ausencia de caminos mínimos, este además debe explotar los caminos no mínimos cuando el tráfico es adverso. Estos algoritmos de enrutamiento habitualmente seleccionan entre rutas mínimas y no mínimas en base a las condiciones de la red. Las rutas no mínimas habitualmente se basan en el algoritmo de balanceo de carga propuesto por Valiant, esto implica que doblan la longitud de las rutas mínimas y por lo tanto, la latencia soportada por los paquetes se incrementa. En cuanto a la tecnología, desde su introducción en entornos HPC a principios de los años 2000, Ethernet ha sido usado en un porcentaje representativo de los sistemas. Esta tesis introduce una implementación realista y competitiva de una red escalable y sin pérdidas basada en dispositivos de red Ethernet commodity, considerando topologías de bajo diámetro y bajo consumo energético y logrando un ahorro energético de hasta un 54%. Además, propone un enrutamiento sobre la citada arquitectura, en adelante QCN-Switch, el cual selecciona entre rutas mínimas y no mínimas basado en notificaciones de congestión explícitas. Una vez implementada la decisión de enrutar siguiendo rutas no mínimas, se introduce un enrutamiento adaptativo en fuente capaz de adaptar el número de saltos en las rutas no mínimas. Este enrutamiento, en adelante ACOR, es agnóstico de la topología y mejora la latencia en hasta un 28%. Finalmente, se introduce un enrutamiento dependiente de la topología, en adelante LIAN, que optimiza el número de saltos de las rutas no mínimas basado en las condiciones de la red. Los resultados de su evaluación muestran que obtiene una latencia cuasi óptima y mejora el rendimiento de algoritmos de enrutamiento actuales reduciendo la latencia en hasta un 30% y obteniendo un rendimiento estable y equitativo.ABSTRACT: Interconnection network is a key concept of any parallel computing system. The first aspect to define an interconnection network is its topology. Typically, power and cost-efficient scalable networks with low diameter rely on topologies that approach the Moore bound in which there is no minimal path diversity. Once the topology is defined, the performance bounds of the network are determined consequently, so a suitable routing algorithm should be designed to accomplish as much as possible of those limits and, due to the lack of minimal path diversity, it must exploit non-minimal paths when the traffic pattern is adversarial. These routing algorithms usually select between minimal and non-minimal paths based on the network conditions, where the non-minimal paths are built according to Valiant load-balancing algorithm. This implies that these paths double the length of minimal ones and then the latency supported by packets increases. Regarding the technology, from its introduction in HPC systems in the early 2000s, Ethernet has been used in a significant fraction of the systems. This dissertation introduces a realistic and competitive implementation of a scalable lossless Ethernet network for HPC environments considering low-diameter and low-power topologies. This allows for up to 54% power savings. Furthermore, it proposes a routing upon the cited architecture, hereon QCN-Switch, which selects between minimal and non-minimal paths per packet based on explicit congestion notifications instead of credits. Once the miss-routing decision is implemented, it introduces two mechanisms regarding the selection of the intermediate switch to develop a source adaptive routing algorithm capable of adapting the number of hops in the non-minimal paths. This routing, hereon ACOR, is topology-agnostic and improves average latency in all cases up to 28%. Finally, a topology-dependent routing, hereon LIAN, is introduced to optimize the number of hops in the non-minimal paths based on the network live conditions. The basic objectives of the programs, which are in the 31st year of operation nationally, are (1) to further the professional knowledge of qualified engineering and science faculty members; (2) to stimulate an exchange of ideas between participants and NASA; (3) to enrich and refresh the research and teaching activities of participants' institutions; and (4) to contribute to the research objectives of the NASA centers. The Faculty Fellows spent 10 weeks at MSFC engaged in a research project compatible with their interests and background and worked in collaboration with a NASA/MSFC colleague.
