    Rethinking Distributed Caching Systems Design and Implementation

    Distributed caching systems based on in-memory key-value stores have become a crucial aspect of fast and efficient content delivery in modern web-applications. However, due to the dynamic and skewed execution environments and workloads, under which such systems typically operate, several problems arise in the form of load imbalance. This thesis addresses the sources of load imbalance in caching systems, mainly: i) data placement, which relates to distribution of data items across servers and ii) data item access frequency, which describes amount of requests each server has to process, and how each server is able to cope with it. Thus, providing several strategies to overcome the sources of imbalance in isolation. As a use case, we analyse Memcached, its variants, and propose a novel solution for distributed caching systems. Our solution revolves around increasing parallelism through load segregation, and solutions to overcome the load discrepancies when reaching high saturation scenarios, mostly through access re-arrangement, and internal replication.Os sistemas de cache distribuídos baseados em armazenamento de pares chave-valor em RAM, tornaram-se um aspecto crucial em aplicações web modernas para o fornecimento rápido e eficiente de conteúdo. No entanto, estes sistemas normalmente estão sujeitos a ambientes muito dinâmicos e irregulares. Este tipo de ambientes e irregularidades, causa vários problemas, que emergem sob a forma de desequilíbrios de carga. Esta tese aborda as diferentes origens de desequilíbrio de carga em sistemas de caching distribuído, principalmente: i) colocação de dados, que se relaciona com a distribuição dos dados pelos servidores e a ii) frequência de acesso aos dados, que reflete a quantidade de pedidos que cada servidor deve processar e como cada servidor lida com a sua carga. Desta forma, demonstramos várias estratégias para reduzir o impacto proveniente das fontes de desequilíbrio, quando analizadas em isolamento. Como caso de uso, analisamos o sistema Memcached, as suas variantes, e propomos uma nova solução para sistemas de caching distribuídos. A nossa solução gira em torno de aumento de paralelismo atraves de segregação de carga e em como superar superar as discrepâncias de carga a quando de sistema entra em grande saturação, principalmente atraves de reorganização de acesso e de replicação intern

    Resource Management in Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC)

    This PhD thesis investigates the effective ways of managing the resources of a Multi-Access Edge Computing Platform (MEC) in 5th Generation Mobile Communication (5G) networks. The main characteristics of MEC include distributed nature, proximity to users, and high availability. Based on these key features, solutions have been proposed for effective resource management. In this research, two aspects of resource management in MEC have been addressed. They are the computational resource and the caching resource which corresponds to the services provided by the MEC. MEC is a new 5G enabling technology proposed to reduce latency by bringing cloud computing capability closer to end-user Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile devices. MEC would support latency-critical user applications such as driverless cars and e-health. These applications will depend on resources and services provided by the MEC. However, MEC has limited computational and storage resources compared to the cloud. Therefore, it is important to ensure a reliable MEC network communication during resource provisioning by eradicating the chances of deadlock. Deadlock may occur due to a huge number of devices contending for a limited amount of resources if adequate measures are not put in place. It is crucial to eradicate deadlock while scheduling and provisioning resources on MEC to achieve a highly reliable and readily available system to support latency-critical applications. In this research, a deadlock avoidance resource provisioning algorithm has been proposed for industrial IoT devices using MEC platforms to ensure higher reliability of network interactions. The proposed scheme incorporates Banker’s resource-request algorithm using Software Defined Networking (SDN) to reduce communication overhead. Simulation and experimental results have shown that system deadlock can be prevented by applying the proposed algorithm which ultimately leads to a more reliable network interaction between mobile stations and MEC platforms. Additionally, this research explores the use of MEC as a caching platform as it is proclaimed as a key technology for reducing service processing delays in 5G networks. Caching on MEC decreases service latency and improve data content access by allowing direct content delivery through the edge without fetching data from the remote server. Caching on MEC is also deemed as an effective approach that guarantees more reachability due to proximity to endusers. In this regard, a novel hybrid content caching algorithm has been proposed for MEC platforms to increase their caching efficiency. The proposed algorithm is a unification of a modified Belady’s algorithm and a distributed cooperative caching algorithm to improve data access while reducing latency. A polynomial fit algorithm with Lagrange interpolation is employed to predict future request references for Belady’s algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm obtains 4% more cache hits due to its selective caching approach when compared with case study algorithms. Results also show that the use of a cooperative algorithm can improve the total cache hits up to 80%. Furthermore, this thesis has also explored another predictive caching scheme to further improve caching efficiency. The motivation was to investigate another predictive caching approach as an improvement to the formal. A Predictive Collaborative Replacement (PCR) caching framework has been proposed as a result which consists of three schemes. Each of the schemes addresses a particular problem. The proactive predictive scheme has been proposed to address the problem of continuous change in cache popularity trends. The collaborative scheme addresses the problem of cache redundancy in the collaborative space. Finally, the replacement scheme is a solution to evict cold cache blocks and increase hit ratio. Simulation experiment has shown that the replacement scheme achieves 3% more cache hits than existing replacement algorithms such as Least Recently Used, Multi Queue and Frequency-based replacement. PCR algorithm has been tested using a real dataset (MovieLens20M dataset) and compared with an existing contemporary predictive algorithm. Results show that PCR performs better with a 25% increase in hit ratio and a 10% CPU utilization overhead

    Exploiting method semantics in client cache consistency protocols for object-oriented databases

    PhD ThesisData-shipping systems are commonly used in client-server object-oriented databases. This is in- tended to utilise clients' resources and improve scalability by allowing clients to run transactions locally after fetching the required database items from the database server. A consequence of this is that a database item can be cached at more than one client. This therefore raises issues regarding client cache consistency and concurrency control. A number of client cache consistency protocols have been studied, and some approaches to concurrency control for object-oriented datahases have been proposed. Existing client consistency protocols, however, do not consider method semantics in concurrency control. This study proposes a client cache consistency protocol where method se- mantic can be exploited in concurrency control. It identifies issues regarding the use of method semantics for the protocol and investigates the performance using simulation. The performance re- sults show that this can result in performance gains when compared to existing protocols. The study also shows the potential benefits of asynchronous version of the protoco

    Smart hardware designs for probabilistically-analyzable processor architectures

    Future Critical Real-Time Embedded Systems (CRTES), like those is planes, cars or trains, require more and more guaranteed performance in order to satisfy the increasing performance demands of advanced complex software features. While increased performance can be achieved by deploying processor techniques currently used in High-Performance Computing (HPC) and mainstream domains, their use challenges the software timing analysis, a necessary step in CRTES' verification and validation. Cache memories are known to have high impact in performance, and in fact, current CRTES include multicores usually with several levels of cache. In this line, this Thesis aims at increasing the guaranteed performance of CRTES by using techniques for caches building upon time randomization and providing probabilistic guarantees of tasks' execution time. In this Thesis, we first focus on on improving cache placement and replacement to improve guaranteed performance. For placement, different existing policies are explored in a multi-level cache setup, and a solution is reached in which different of those policies are combined. For cache replacement, we analyze a pathological scenario that no cache policy so far accounts and propose several policies that fix this pathological scenario. For shared caches in multicore we observe that contention is mainly caused by private writes that go through to the shared cache, yet using a pure write-back policy also has its drawbacks. We propose a hybrid approach to mitigate this contention. Building on this solution, the next contribution tackles a problem caused by the need of some reliability mechanisms in CRTES. Implementing reliability close to the processor's core has a significant impact in performance. A look-ahead error detection solution is proposed to greatly mitigate the performance impact. The next contribution proposes the first hardware prefetcher for CRTES with arbitrary cache hierarchies. Given its speculative nature, prefetchers that have a guaranteed positive impact on performance are difficult to design. We present a framework that provides execution time guarantees and obtains a performance benefit. Finally, we focus on the impact of timing anomalies in CRTES with caches. For the first time, a definition and taxonomy of timing anomalies is given for Measurement-Based Timing Analysis. Then, we focus on a specific timing anomaly that can happen with caches and provide a solution to account for it in the execution time estimates.Los Sistemas Empotrados de Tiempo-Real Crítico (SETRC), como los de los aviones, coches o trenes, requieren más y más rendimiento garantizado para satisfacer la demanda al alza de rendimiento para funciones complejas y avanzadas de software. Aunque el incremento en rendimiento puede ser adquirido utilizando técnicas de arquitectura de procesadores actualmente utilizadas en la Computación de Altas Prestaciones (CAP) i en los dominios convencionales, este uso presenta retos para el análisis del tiempo de software, un paso necesario en la verificación y validación de SETRC. Las memorias caches son conocidas por su gran impacto en rendimiento y, de hecho, los actuales SETRC incluyen multicores normalmente con diversos niveles de cache. En esta línea, esta Tesis tiene como objetivo mejorar el rendimiento garantizado de los SETRC utilizando técnicas para caches y utilizando métodos como la randomización del tiempo y proveyendo garantías probabilísticas de tiempo de ejecución de las tareas. En esta Tesis, primero nos centramos en mejorar la colocación y el reemplazo de caches para mejorar el rendimiento garantizado. Para la colocación, diferentes políticas son exploradas en un sistema cache multi-nivel, y se llega a una solución donde diversas de estas políticas son combinadas. Para el reemplazo, analizamos un escenario patológico que ninguna política actual tiene en cuenta, y proponemos varias políticas que solucionan este escenario patológico. Para caches compartidas en multicores, observamos que la contención es causada principalmente por escrituras privadas que van a través de la cache compartida, pero usar una política de escritura retardada pura también tiene sus consecuencias. Proponemos un enfoque híbrido para mitigar la contención. Sobre esta solución, la siguiente contribución ataca un problema causado por la necesidad de mecanismos de fiabilidad en SETRC. Implementar fiabilidad cerca del núcleo del procesador tiene un impacto significativo en rendimiento. Una solución basada en anticipación se propone para mitigar el impacto en rendimiento. La siguiente contribución propone el primer prefetcher hardware para SETRC con una jerarquía de caches arbitraria. Por primera vez, se da una definición y taxonomía de anomalías temporales para Análisis Temporal Basado en Medidas. Después, nos centramos en una anomalía temporal concreta que puede pasar con caches y ofrecemos una solución que la tiene en cuenta en las estimaciones del tiempo de ejecución.Postprint (published version

    Design and Implementation of a Time Predictable Processor: Evaluation With a Space Case Study

    Embedded real-time systems like those found in automotive, rail and aerospace, steadily require higher levels of guaranteed computing performance (and hence time predictability) motivated by the increasing number of functionalities provided by software. However, high-performance processor design is driven by the average-performance needs of mainstream market. To make things worse, changing those designs is hard since the embedded real-time market is comparatively a small market. A path to address this mismatch is designing low-complexity hardware features that favor time predictability and can be enabled/disabled not to affect average performance when performance guarantees are not required. In this line, we present the lessons learned designing and implementing LEOPARD, a four-core processor facilitating measurement-based timing analysis (widely used in most domains). LEOPARD has been designed adding low-overhead hardware mechanisms to a LEON3 processor baseline that allow capturing the impact of jittery resources (i.e. with variable latency) in the measurements performed at analysis time. In particular, at core level we handle the jitter of caches, TLBs and variable-latency floating point units; and at the chip level, we deal with contention so that time-composable timing guarantees can be obtained. The result of our applied study with a Space application shows how per-resource jitter is controlled facilitating the computation of high-quality WCET estimates

    The execution of parallel discrete event simulation across metacomputing infrastructures is examined. A master/worker architecture for parallel discrete event simulation is proposed providing robust executions under a dynamic set of services with system-level support for fault tolerance, semi-automated client-directed load balancing, portability across heterogeneous machines, and the ability to run codes on idle or time-sharing clients without significant interaction by users. Research questions and challenges associated with issues and limitations with the work distribution paradigm, targeted computational domain, performance metrics, and the intended class of applications to be used in this context are analyzed and discussed. A portable web services approach to master/worker parallel discrete event simulation is proposed and evaluated with subsequent optimizations to increase the efficiency of large-scale simulation execution through distributed master service design and intrinsic overhead reduction. New techniques for addressing challenges associated with optimistic parallel discrete event simulation across metacomputing such as rollbacks and message unsending with an inherently different computation paradigm utilizing master services and time windows are proposed and examined.     On the Importance of Infrastructure-Awareness in Large-Scale Distributed Storage Systems

    Big data applications put significant latency and throughput demands on distributed storage systems. Meeting these demands requires storage systems to use a significant amount of infrastructure resources, such as network capacity and storage devices. Resource demands largely depend on the workloads and can vary significantly over time. Moreover, demand hotspots can move rapidly between different infrastructure locations. Existing storage systems are largely infrastructure-oblivious as they are designed to support a broad range of hardware and deployment scenarios. Most only use basic configuration information about the infrastructure to make important placement and routing decisions. In the case of cloud-based storage systems, cloud services have their own infrastructure-specific limitations, such as minimum request sizes and maximum number of concurrent requests. By ignoring infrastructure-specific details, these storage systems are unable to react to resource demand changes and may have additional inefficiencies from performing redundant network operations. As a result, provisioning enough resources for these systems to address all possible workloads and scenarios would be cost prohibitive. This thesis studies the performance problems in commonly used distributed storage systems and introduces novel infrastructure-aware design methods to improve their performance. First, it addresses the problem of slow reads due to network congestion that is induced by disjoint replica and path selection. Selecting a read replica separately from the network path can perform poorly if all paths to the pre-selected endpoints are congested. Second, this thesis looks at scalability limitations of consensus protocols that are commonly used in geo-distributed key value stores and distributed ledgers. Due to their network-oblivious designs, existing protocols redundantly communicate over highly oversubscribed WAN links, which poorly utilize network resources and limits consistent replication at large scale. Finally, this thesis addresses the need for a cloud-specific realtime storage system for capital market use cases. Public cloud infrastructures provide feature-rich and cost-effective storage services. However, existing realtime timeseries databases are not built to take advantage of cloud storage services. Therefore, they do not effectively utilize cloud services to provide high performance while minimizing deployment cost. This thesis presents three systems that address these problems by using infrastructure-aware design methods. Our performance evaluation of these systems shows that infrastructure-aware design is highly effective in improving the performance of large scale distributed storage systems

    Video Caching, Analytics and Delivery at the Wireless Edge: A Survey and Future Directions

    Future wireless networks will provide high bandwidth, low-latency, and ultra-reliable Internet connectivity to meet the requirements of different applications, ranging from mobile broadband to the Internet of Things. To this aim, mobile edge caching, computing, and communication (edge-C3) have emerged to bring network resources (i.e., bandwidth, storage, and computing) closer to end users. Edge-C3 allows improving the network resource utilization as well as the quality of experience (QoE) of end users. Recently, several video-oriented mobile applications (e.g., live content sharing, gaming, and augmented reality) have leveraged edge-C3 in diverse scenarios involving video streaming in both the downlink and the uplink. Hence, a large number of recent works have studied the implications of video analysis and streaming through edge-C3. This article presents an in-depth survey on video edge-C3 challenges and state-of-the-art solutions in next-generation wireless and mobile networks. Specifically, it includes: a tutorial on video streaming in mobile networks (e.g., video encoding and adaptive bitrate streaming); an overview of mobile network architectures, enabling technologies, and applications for video edge-C3; video edge computing and analytics in uplink scenarios (e.g., architectures, analytics, and applications); and video edge caching, computing and communication methods in downlink scenarios (e.g., collaborative, popularity-based, and context-aware). A new taxonomy for video edge-C3 is proposed and the major contributions of recent studies are first highlighted and then systematically compared. Finally, several open problems and key challenges for future research are outlined

    Reducing redundancy of real time computer graphics in mobile systems

    The goal of this thesis is to propose novel and effective techniques to eliminate redundant computations that waste energy and are performed in real-time computer graphics applications, with special focus on mobile GPU micro-architecture. Improving the energy-efficiency of CPU/GPU systems is not only key to enlarge their battery life, but also allows to increase their performance because, to avoid overheating above thermal limits, SoCs tend to be throttled when the load is high for a large period of time. Prior studies pointed out that the CPU and especially the GPU are the principal energy consumers in the graphics subsystem, being the off-chip main memory accesses and the processors inside the GPU the primary energy consumers of the graphics subsystem. First, we focus on reducing redundant fragment processing computations by means of improving the culling of hidden surfaces. During real-time graphics rendering, objects are processed by the GPU in the order they are submitted by the CPU, and occluded surfaces are often processed even though they will end up not being part of the final image. When the GPU realizes that an object or part of it is not going to be visible, all activity required to compute its color and store it has already been performed. We propose a novel architectural technique for mobile GPUs, Visibility Rendering Order (VRO), which reorders objects front-to-back entirely in hardware to maximize the culling effectiveness of the GPU and minimize overshading, hence reducing execution time and energy consumption. VRO exploits the fact that the objects in graphics animated applications tend to keep its relative depth order across consecutive frames (temporal coherence) to provide the feeling of smooth transition. VRO keeps visibility information of a frame, and uses it to reorder the objects of the following frame. VRO just requires adding a small hardware to capture the visibility information and use it later to guide the rendering of the following frame. Moreover, VRO works in parallel with the graphics pipeline, so negligible performance overheads are incurred. We illustrate the benefits of VRO using various unmodified commercial 3D applications for which VRO achieves 27% speed-up and 14.8% energy reduction on average. Then, we focus on avoiding redundant computations related to CPU Collision Detection (CD). Graphics applications such as 3D games represent a large percentage of downloaded applications for mobile devices and the trend is towards more complex and realistic scenes with accurate 3D physics simulations. CD is one of the most important algorithms in any physics kernel since it identifies the contact points between the objects of a scene and determines when they collide. However, real-time accurate CD is very expensive in terms of energy consumption. We propose Render Based Collision Detection (RBCD), a novel energy-efficient high-fidelity CD scheme that leverages some intermediate results of the rendering pipeline to perform CD, so that redundant tasks are done just once. Comparing RBCD with a conventional CD completely executed in the CPU, we show that its execution time is reduced by almost three orders of magnitude (600x speedup), because most of the CD task of our model comes for free by reusing the image rendering intermediate results. Although not necessarily, such a dramatic time improvement may result in better frames per second if physics simulation stays in the critical path. However, the most important advantage of our technique is the enormous energy savings that result from eliminating a long and costly CPU computation and converting it into a few simple operations executed by a specialized hardware within the GPU. Our results show that the energy consumed by CD is reduced on average by a factor of 448x (i.e., by 99.8\%). These dramatic benefits are accompanied by a higher fidelity CD analysis (i.e., with finer granularity), which improves the quality and realism of the application.El objetivo de esta tesis es proponer técnicas efectivas y originales para eliminar computaciones inútiles que aparecen en aplicaciones gráficas, con especial énfasis en micro-arquitectura de GPUs. Mejorar la eficiencia energética de los sistemas CPU/GPU no es solo clave para alargar la vida de la batería, sino también incrementar su rendimiento. Estudios previos han apuntado que la CPU y especialmente la GPU son los principales consumidores de energía en el sub-sistema gráfico, siendo los accesos a memoria off-chip y los procesadores dentro de la GPU los principales consumidores de energía del sub-sistema gráfico. Primero, nos hemos centrado en reducir computaciones redundantes de la fase de fragment processing mediante la mejora en la eliminación de superficies ocultas. Durante el renderizado de gráficos en tiempo real, los objetos son procesados por la GPU en el orden en el que son enviados por la CPU, y las superficies ocultas son a menudo procesadas incluso si no no acaban formando parte de la imagen final. Cuando la GPU averigua que el objeto o parte de él no es visible, toda la actividad requerida para computar su color y guardarlo ha sido realizada. Proponemos una técnica arquitectónica original para GPUs móviles, Visibility Rendering Order (VRO), la cual reordena los objetos de delante hacia atrás por completo en hardware para maximizar la efectividad del culling de la GPU y así minimizar el overshading, y por lo tanto reducir el tiempo de ejecución y el consumo de energía. VRO explota el hecho de que los objetos de las aplicaciones gráficas animadas tienden a mantener su orden relativo en profundidad a través de frames consecutivos (coherencia temporal) para proveer animaciones con transiciones suaves. Dado que las relaciones de orden en profundidad entre objetos son testeadas en la GPU, VRO introduce costes mínimos en energía. Solo requiere añadir una pequeña unidad hardware para capturar la información de visibilidad. Además, VRO trabaja en paralelo con el pipeline gráfico, por lo que introduce costes insignificantes en tiempo. Ilustramos los beneficios de VRO usango varias aplicaciones 3D comerciales para las cuales VRO consigue un 27% de speed-up y un 14.8% de reducción de energía en media. En segundo lugar, evitamos computaciones redundantes relacionadas con la Detección de Colisiones (CD) en la CPU. Las aplicaciones gráficas animadas como los juegos 3D representan un alto porcentaje de las aplicaciones descargadas en dispositivos móviles y la tendencia es hacia escenas más complejas y realistas con simulaciones físicas 3D precisas. La CD es uno de los algoritmos más importantes entre los kernel de físicas dado que identifica los puntos de contacto entre los objetos de una escena. Sin embargo, una CD en tiempo real y precisa es muy costosa en términos de consumo energético. Proponemos Render Based Collision Detection (RBCD), una técnica energéticamente eficiente y preciso de CD que utiliza resultados intermedios del rendering pipeline para realizar la CD. Comparando RBCD con una CD convencional completamente ejecutada en la CPU, mostramos que el tiempo de ejecución es reducido casi tres órdenes de magnitud (600x speedup), porque la mayoría de la CD de nuestro modelo reusa resultados intermedios del renderizado de la imagen. Aunque no es así necesariamente, esta espectacular en tiempo puede resultar en mejores frames por segundo si la simulación de físicas está en el camino crítico. Sin embargo, la ventaja más importante de nuestra técnica es el enorme ahorro de energía que resulta de eliminar las largas y costosas computaciones en la CPU, sustituyéndolas por unas pocas operaciones ejecutadas en un hardware especializado dentro de la GPU. Nuestros resultados muestran que la energía consumida por la CD es reducidad en media por un factor de 448x.
