Preparation for Collegiate Music Theory and Aural Skills Through Repertoire

    Get PDF
Music majors often struggle in first-year music theory and aural skills coursework. These struggles have lead to increased dropout rates among music students. Even those students who succeed in music theory course work often are not able to apply theory concepts to music literature. Some universities have identified this problem and sought to rectify it through offering remedial course work, however the universities should not bear this burden. Success in theory and aural skills is linked to mastery of music fundamentals and basic aural skills. Pre-college studies should focus on these subjects and not place too much emphasis on advanced music theory or performance skills alone. Performance studies represent a relevant and readily available platform in which to gain fundamental theory and aural skills. Performance teachers must take the responsibility to purposely integrate music theory and aural skills into their lessons and rehearsals. The ability to put theory into practice contributes to the making of a whole musician. Students studying theory and aural skills through repertoire will gain a more holistic understanding of music and these skills will have practical meaning for the student

The game will be an escape room with trivia/multi answer questions introduced by the teacher that will condition the players to progress. The game was built in the Unity game engine using c#. A companion web app was built using Javascript and Firebase, to be used by the teachers to upload their open subject questions for the game. The project was built with scalability in mind to make the project a starter for other students so it is highly encouraged that any students on different paths (business, psychology, or other computer science students), adopt this project and build on top it.

Implementing supplemental course material websites for higher education technology courses

    Get PDF
Supplemental websites have the potential to assist students in gathering course materials, encouraging topic exploration, and increasing the ability for students to communicate in a traditional face-to-face technology college classroom. This project description presents the results of a supplemental website\u27s development and deployment into a traditional face-to-face college technology course, and measures its success. The research focuses on successful Internet employment within traditional classrooms to ensure that the content of the supplemental website has value to the students. The methodology used to develop the website and select materials was based upon the Dick and Carey Instructional Design Method (Dick & Carey, 2001). The project reaches two major conclusions: a) based on student responses and server logs, the supplemental technology website is being used by students and b) students value having the resource available to them during the technology course
