The article presents informations about the economy and the ways of pro ducing food in the early iron age (VI–IV b.C.) at the area of the Kaszubskie and Starogardzkie lake districts. The economy of the Pomeranian culture at this area was complicated. Due to the lack of knowledge about the settlements of this people our information are not full. The agriculture was depending on barley, wheat, rye and also millet and pea. Fields were being extensively used until the day they were impoverished, and then left for several years. Theoretically the early iron age agriculture was satisfying 2/3 demand for food. People were breeding cows and also pigs and sheep/goats. The hunting strategy was to follow sort of animals not for meat but also for horns (deer) and furs (beavers). The consumption of foxes and even squirrels can be included. Fishing (especially in springs) was also important – with fishes like breams, roaches and sanders. The type of economy developed in the early iron age was strongly depend ing on weather conditions. The typological and raw material diversity of artefacts discovered at the Post-medieval burials gives enormous interpretative possibilities in the field of funeral rites. The archaeological research conducted by the Documentation and Conservation Laboratory of the Institute of Archaeology at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in 2009–2016 in the church and in the surrounding area in Gniew, as well as in the crypts of the church in Szczuczyn allowed for the development of a scheme of operation on this type of archaeological site, and three main groups of registered artefacts (coffins, clothes, devotional items) provideda lot of information on funeral rites and allowed for the identification of the deceased.Różnorodność typologiczna i surowcowa odkrywanych przy nowożytnych pochówkach przedmiotów daje olbrzymie możliwości interpretacyjne w zakresie obrzędowości pogrzebowej. Prowadzone przez Pracownię Dokumentacji i Konserwacji Instytutu Archeologii Uniwersytetu Mikołaja Kopernika w latach 2009–2016 badania archeologiczne w kościele i na terenie przykościelnym w Gniewie oraz w kryptach kościoła w Szczuczynie, pozwoliły na wypracowanie schematu działania na tego typu stanowiskach archeologicznych, a rejestrowane trzy główne grupy przedmiotów zabytkowych (trumny, ubiory, dewocjonalia) dostarczyły wielu informacji na temat obrzędowości pogrzebowej i pozwoliły na identyfikację zmarłych

The Cold Water Ordeal (Swimming) in Witchcraft Accusations and Trials in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the Sixteenth-Eighteenth Century

One of the medieval trials by ordeal, the cold water ordeal, regained popularity in the Early Modern Period and served as an important element in witchcraft trials. Floating on water was seen as a decisive proof of guilt and resulted in the accused being handed over to the torturer. This paper discusses the use of the water ordeal in Poland in the sixteenth–eighteenth century, primarily by municipal courts. Among the issues mentioned in the paper there is also the question of the stage of the trial in which the water ordeal was used and whether the accused were undressed before being subjected to the ordeal

The article discusses selected fragments of history of the Bailiwick of Brandenburg, a jurisdiction of the Knights Hospitaller until the end of the 16th century, showing structural transformations it underwent over the centuries.
