    Design and Control of Robotic Systems for Lower Limb Stroke Rehabilitation

    Lower extremity stroke rehabilitation exhausts considerable health care resources, is labor intensive, and provides mostly qualitative metrics of patient recovery. To overcome these issues, robots can assist patients in physically manipulating their affected limb and measure the output motion. The robots that have been currently designed, however, provide assistance over a limited set of training motions, are not portable for in-home and in-clinic use, have high cost and may not provide sufficient safety or performance. This thesis proposes the idea of incorporating a mobile drive base into lower extremity rehabilitation robots to create a portable, inherently safe system that provides assistance over a wide range of training motions. A set of rehabilitative motion tasks were established and a six-degree-of-freedom (DOF) motion and force-sensing system was designed to meet high-power, large workspace, and affordability requirements. An admittance controller was implemented, and the feasibility of using this portable, low-cost system for movement assistance was shown through tests on a healthy individual. An improved version of the robot was then developed that added torque sensing and known joint elasticity for use in future clinical testing with a flexible-joint impedance controller

It includes a brief overview of the existing uses of service robots by disabled and elderly people and advances in technology which will make new uses possible and provides suggestions for some of these new applications. The paper also considers the design and other conditions to be met for user acceptance. It also discusses the complementarity of assistive service robots and personal assistance and considers the types of applications and users for which service robots are and are not suitable

    VIRTUAL REALITY SIMULATION FOR MYRINGOTOMY TRAINING WITH HAPTIC FEEDBACK

    Myringotomy is a surgical procedure in which an incision is made in the eardrum, primarily to treat middle-ear infections. It is a difficult procedure for surgical residents to master because excellent hand-eye coordination is required to work under a surgical microscope and within the narrow ear canal. We have been developing a virtual-reality based surgical simulator for training residents. The current simulator does not include tactile feedback, but such feedback is a very important part of ear surgery. Therefore, the objectives of this work were to incorporate haptic feedback capability into our simulator, estimate the haptic parameter for the eardrum and perform a face validity study to test the effectiveness of the simulator. The results from the face validity study are very encouraging. The simulator is the first of its kind, and with further refinement has excellent potential to be of benefit in the training of proficient surgical residents

    An Overview of Self-Adaptive Technologies Within Virtual Reality Training

    This overview presents the current state-of-the-art of self-adaptive technologies within virtual reality (VR) training. Virtual reality training and assessment is increasingly used for five key areas: medical, industrial & commercial training, serious games, rehabilitation and remote training such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Adaptation can be applied to five core technologies of VR including haptic devices, stereo graphics, adaptive content, assessment and autonomous agents. Automation of VR training can contribute to automation of actual procedures including remote and robotic assisted surgery which reduces injury and improves accuracy of the procedure. Automated haptic interaction can enable tele-presence and virtual artefact tactile interaction from either remote or simulated environments. Automation, machine learning and data driven features play an important role in providing trainee-specific individual adaptive training content. Data from trainee assessment can form an input to autonomous systems for customised training and automated difficulty levels to match individual requirements. Self-adaptive technology has been developed previously within individual technologies of VR training. One of the conclusions of this research is that while it does not exist, an enhanced portable framework is needed and it would be beneficial to combine automation of core technologies, producing a reusable automation framework for VR training

    Enabling natural interaction for virtual reality

    This research focuses on the exploration of software and methods to support natural interaction within a virtual environment. Natural interaction refers to the ability of the technology to support human interactions with computer generated simulations that most accurately reflect interactions with real objects. Over the years since the invention of computer-aided design tools, computers have become ubiquitous in the product design process. Increasingly, engineers and designers are using immersive virtual reality to evaluate virtual products throughout the entire design process. The goal of this research is to develop tools that support verisimilitude, or likeness to reality, particularly with respect to human interaction with virtual objects. Increasing the verisimilitude of the interactions and experiences in a virtual environment has the potential to increase the external validity of such data, resulting in more reliable decisions and better products. First, interface software is presented that extends the potential reach of virtual reality to include low-cost, consumer-grade motion sensing devices, thus enabling virtual reality on a broader scale. Second, a software platform, VR JuggLua, is developed to enable rapid and iterative creation of natural interactions in virtual environments, including by end-user programmers. Based on this software platform, the focus of the rest of the research is on supporting virtual assembly and decision making. The SPARTA software incorporates a powerful physically-based modeling simulation engine tuned for haptic interaction. The workspace of a haptic device is both virtually expanded, though an extension to the bubble technique, and physically expanded, through integration of a haptic device with a multi-directional mobile platform. Finally, a class of hybrid methods for haptic collision detection and response is characterized in terms of five independent tasks. One such novel hybrid method, which selectively restores degrees of freedom in haptic assembly, is developed and assessed with respect to low-clearance CAD assembly. It successfully maintains the high 1000 Hz update rate required for stable haptics unlike previous related approaches. Overall, this work forms a pattern of contributions towards enabling natural interaction for virtual reality and advances the ability to use an immersive environment in decision making during product design

    A reconfigurable tactile display based on polymer MEMS technology

    This research focuses on the development of polymer microfabrication technologies for the realization of two major components of a pneumatic tactile display: a microactuator array and a complementary microvalve (control) array. The concept, fabrication, and characterization of a kinematically-stabilized polymeric microbubble actuator (¡°endoskeletal microbubble actuator¡±) were presented. A systematic design and modeling procedure was carried out to generate an optimized geometry of the corrugated diaphragm to satisfy membrane deflection, force, and stability requirements set forth by the tactile display goals. A refreshable Braille cell as a tactile display prototype has been developed based on a 2x3 endoskeletal microbubble array and an array of commercial valves. The prototype can provide both a static display (which meets the displacement and force requirement of a Braille display) and vibratory tactile sensations. Along with the above capabilities, the device was designed to meet the criteria of lightness and compactness to permit portable operation. The design is scalable with respect to the number of tactile actuators while still being simple to fabricate. In order to further reduce the size and cost of the tactile display, a microvalve array can be integrated into the tactile display system to control the pneumatic fluid that actuates the microbubble actuator. A piezoelectrically-driven and hydraulically-amplified polymer microvalve has been designed, fabricated, and tested. An incompressible elastomer was used as a solid hydraulic medium to convert the small axial displacement of a piezoelectric actuator into a large valve head stroke while maintaining a large blocking force. The function of the microvalve as an on-off switch for a pneumatic microbubble tactile actuator was demonstrated.     Haptic Device Design and Teleoperation Control Algorithms for Mobile Manipulators

    The increasing need of teleoperated robotic systems implies more and more often to use, as slave devices, mobile platforms (terrestrial, aerial or underwater) with integrated manipulation capabilities, provided e.g. by robotic arms with proper grasping/manipulation tools. Despite this, the research activity in teleoperation of robotic systems has mainly focused on the control of either fixed-base manipulators or mobile robots, non considering the integration of these two types of systems in a single device. Such a combined robotic devices are usually referred to as mobile manipulators: systems composed by both a robotic manipulator and a mobile platform (on which the arm is mounted) whose purpose is to enlarge the manipulator’s workspace. The combination of a mobile platform and a serial manipulator creates redundancy: a particular point in the space can be reached by moving the manipulator, by moving the mobile platform, or by a combined motion of both. A synchronized motion of both devices need then to be addressed. Although specific haptic devices explicitly oriented to the control of mobile manipulators need to be designed, there are no commercial solution yet. For this reason it is often necessary to control such as combined systems with traditional haptic devices not specifically oriented to the control of mobile manipulators. The research activity presented in this Ph.D. thesis focuses in the first place on the design of a teleoperation control scheme which allows the simultaneous control of both the manipulator and the mobile platform by means of a single haptic device characterized by fixed base and an open kinematic chain. Secondly the design of a novel cable-drive haptic devices has been faced. Investigating the use of twisted strings actuation in force rendering is the most interesting challenge of the latter activity
