    Drone Base Station Trajectory Management for Optimal Scheduling in LTE-Based Sparse Delay-Sensitive M2M Networks

    Providing connectivity in areas out of reach of the cellular infrastructure is a very active area of research. This connectivity is particularly needed in case of the deployment of machine type communication devices (MTCDs) for critical purposes such as homeland security. In such applications, MTCDs are deployed in areas that are hard to reach using regular communications infrastructure while the collected data is timely critical. Drone-supported communications constitute a new trend in complementing the reach of the terrestrial communication infrastructure. In this study, drones are used as base stations to provide real-time communication services to gather critical data out of a group of MTCDs that are sparsely deployed in a marine environment. Studying different communication technologies as LTE, WiFi, LPWAN and Free-Space Optical communication (FSOC) incorporated with the drone communications was important in the first phase of this research to identify the best candidate for addressing this need. We have determined the cellular technology, and particularly LTE, to be the most suitable candidate to support such applications. In this case, an LTE base station would be mounted on the drone which will help communicate with the different MTCDs to transmit their data to the network backhaul. We then formulate the problem model mathematically and devise the trajectory planning and scheduling algorithm that decides the drone path and the resulting scheduling. Based on this formulation, we decided to compare between an Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) based technique that optimizes the drone movement among the sparsely-deployed MTCDs and a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based solution that achieves the same purpose. This optimization is based on minimizing the energy cost of the drone movement while ensuring the data transmission deadline missing is minimized. We present the results of several simulation experiments that validate the different performance aspects of the technique

    Fine-grained performance analysis of massive MTC networks with scheduling and data aggregation

    Abstract. The Internet of Things (IoT) represents a substantial shift within wireless communication and constitutes a relevant topic of social, economic, and overall technical impact. It refers to resource-constrained devices communicating without or with low human intervention. However, communication among machines imposes several challenges compared to traditional human type communication (HTC). Moreover, as the number of devices increases exponentially, different network management techniques and technologies are needed. Data aggregation is an efficient approach to handle the congestion introduced by a massive number of machine type devices (MTDs). The aggregators not only collect data but also implement scheduling mechanisms to cope with scarce network resources. This thesis provides an overview of the most common IoT applications and the network technologies to support them. We describe the most important challenges in machine type communication (MTC). We use a stochastic geometry (SG) tool known as the meta distribution (MD) of the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR), which is the distribution of the conditional SIR distribution given the wireless nodes’ locations, to provide a fine-grained description of the per-link reliability. Specifically, we analyze the performance of two scheduling methods for data aggregation of MTC: random resource scheduling (RRS) and channel-aware resource scheduling (CRS). The results show the fraction of users in the network that achieves a target reliability, which is an important aspect to consider when designing wireless systems with stringent service requirements. Finally, the impact on the fraction of MTDs that communicate with a target reliability when increasing the aggregators density is investigated

    Novel Models and Algorithms Paving the Road towards RF Convergence

    After decades of rapid evolution in electronics and signal processing, the technologies in communications, positioning, and sensing have achieved considerable progress. Our daily lives are fundamentally changed and substantially defined by the advancement in these technologies. However, the trend is challenged by a well-established fact that the spectrum resources, like other natural resources, are gradually becoming scarce. This thesis carries out research in the field of RF convergence, which is regarded as a mean to intelligently exploit spectrum resources, e.g., by finding novel methods of optimising and sharing tasks between communication, positioning, and sensing. The work has been done to closely explore opportunities for supporting the RF convergence. As a supplement for the electromagnetic waves propagation near the ground, ground-to-air channel models are first proposed and analysed, by incorporating the atmospheric effects when the altitude of aerial users is higher than 300 m. The status quos of techniques in communications, positioning, and sensing are separately reviewed, and our newly developments in each field are briefly introduced. For instance, we study the MIMO techniques for interference mitigation on aerial users; we construct the reflected echoes, i.e., the radar receiving, for the joint sensing and communications system. The availability of GNSS signals is of vital importance to the GNSS-enabled services, particularly the life-critical applications. To enhance the resilience of GNSS receivers, the RF fingerprinting based anti-spoofing techniques are also proposed and discussed. Such a guarantee on GNSS and ubiquitous GNSS services drive the utilisation of location information, also needed for communications, hence the proposal of a location-based beamforming algorithm. The superposition coding scheme, as an attempt of the waveform design, is also brought up for the joint sensing and communications. The RF convergence will come with many facets: the joint sensing and communications promotes an efficient use of frequency spectrum; the positioning-aided communications encourage the cooperation between systems; the availability of robust global positioning systems benefits the applications relying on the GNSS service

    Intelligent and Efficient Ultra-Dense Heterogeneous Networks for 5G and Beyond

    Ultra-dense heterogeneous network (HetNet), in which densified small cells overlaying the conventional macro-cells, is a promising technique for the fifth-generation (5G) mobile network. The dense and multi-tier network architecture is able to support the extensive data traffic and diverse quality of service (QoS) but meanwhile arises several challenges especially on the interference coordination and resource management. In this thesis, three novel network schemes are proposed to achieve intelligent and efficient operation based on the deep learning-enabled network awareness. Both optimization and deep learning methods are developed to achieve intelligent and efficient resource allocation in these proposed network schemes. To improve the cost and energy efficiency of ultra-dense HetNets, a hotspot prediction based virtual small cell (VSC) network is proposed. A VSC is formed only when the traffic volume and user density are extremely high. We leverage the feature extraction capabilities of deep learning techniques and exploit a long-short term memory (LSTM) neural network to predict potential hotspots and form VSC. Large-scale antenna array enabled hybrid beamforming is also adaptively adjusted for highly directional transmission to cover these VSCs. Within each VSC, one user equipment (UE) is selected as a cell head (CH), which collects the intra-cell traffic using the unlicensed band and relays the aggregated traffic to the macro-cell base station (MBS) in the licensed band. The inter-cell interference can thus be reduced, and the spectrum efficiency can be improved. Numerical results show that proposed VSCs can reduce 55%55\% power consumption in comparison with traditional small cells. In addition to the smart VSCs deployment, a novel multi-dimensional intelligent multiple access (MD-IMA) scheme is also proposed to achieve stringent and diverse QoS of emerging 5G applications with disparate resource constraints. Multiple access (MA) schemes in multi-dimensional resources are adaptively scheduled to accommodate dynamic QoS requirements and network states. The MD-IMA learns the integrated-quality-of-system-experience (I-QoSE) by monitoring and predicting QoS through the LSTM neural network. The resource allocation in the MD-IMA scheme is formulated as an optimization problem to maximize the I-QoSE as well as minimize the non-orthogonality (NO) in view of implementation constraints. In order to solve this problem, both model-based optimization algorithms and model-free deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approaches are utilized. Simulation results demonstrate that the achievable I-QoSE gain of MD-IMA over traditional MA is 15%15\% - 18%18\%. In the final part of the thesis, a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) enabled 5G-vehicle ad hoc networks (VANET) is designed to support the growing vehicle-generated data traffic. In this integrated architecture, to reduce the signaling overhead, vehicles are clustered under the coordination of SDN and one vehicle in each cluster is selected as a gateway to aggregate intra-cluster traffic. To ensure the capacity of the trunk-link between the gateway and macro base station, a Non-orthogonal Multiplexed Modulation (NOMM) scheme is proposed to split aggregated data stream into multi-layers and use sparse spreading code to partially superpose the modulated symbols on several resource blocks. The simulation results show that the energy efficiency performance of proposed NOMM is around 1.5-2 times than that of the typical orthogonal transmission scheme

In this 5th edition of the electronic conference, contributors were invited to provide papers and presentations from the field of sensors and applications at large, resulting in a wide variety of excellent submissions and topic areas. Papers which attracted the most interest on the web or that provided a particularly innovative contribution were selected for publication in this collection. These peer-reviewed papers are published with the aim of rapid and wide dissemination of research results, developments, and applications. We hope this conference series will grow rapidly in the future and become recognized as a new way and venue by which to (electronically) present new developments related to the field of sensors and their applications

    Leveraging Machine Learning Techniques towards Intelligent Networking Automation

    In this thesis, we address some of the challenges that the Intelligent Networking Automation (INA) paradigm poses. Our goal is to design schemes leveraging Machine Learning (ML) techniques to cope with situations that involve hard decision-making actions. The proposed solutions are data-driven and consist of an agent that operates at network elements such as routers, switches, or network servers. The data are gathered from realistic scenarios, either actual network deployments or emulated environments. To evaluate the enhancements that the designed schemes provide, we compare our solutions to non-intelligent ones. Additionally, we assess the trade-off between the obtained improvements and the computational costs of implementing the proposed mechanisms. Accordingly, this thesis tackles the challenges that four specific research problems present. The first topic addresses the problem of balancing traffic in dense Internet of Things (IoT) network scenarios where the end devices and the Base Stations (BSs) form complex networks. By applying ML techniques to discover patterns in the association between the end devices and the BSs, the proposed scheme can balance the traffic load in a IoT network to increase the packet delivery ratio and reduce the energy cost of data delivery. The second research topic proposes an intelligent congestion control for internet connections at edge network elements. The design includes a congestion predictor based on an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and an Active Queue Management (AQM) parameter tuner. Similarly, the third research topic includes an intelligent solution to the inter-domain congestion. Different from second topic, this problem considers the preservation of the private network data by means of Federated Learning (FL), since network elements of several organizations participate in the intelligent process. Finally, the fourth research topic refers to a framework to efficiently gathering network telemetry (NT) data. The proposed solution considers a traffic-aware approach so that the NT is intelligently collected and transmitted by the network elements. All the proposed schemes are evaluated through use cases considering standardized networking mechanisms. Therefore, we envision that the solutions of these specific problems encompass a set of methods that can be utilized in real-world scenarios towards the realization of the INA paradigm
