    Trabalho final de Mestrado para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Engenharia de Electrónica e TelecomunicaçõesO presente trabalho estuda uma solução alternativa de navegação aeronáutica que contribua para a racionalização da infrastrutura terrestre de ajudas-rádio de navegação na Europa. O conceito designado de “Performance Based Navigation (PBN)” emerge actualmente ao nível da Organização Internacional de Aviação Civil, visando o aperfeiçoamento do sistema de gestão do tráfego aéreo ao nível da eficiência, segurançae capacidade. O conceito PBN promove a modernização da infrastrutura aeronáutica com base na utilização preferencial de sistemas de navegação por satélite, designadamente mediante o recurso a sinais disponibilizados pelas constelações “Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)”. Face às vulnerabilidades dos sistemas GNSS a interferências RF, “jamming” deliberado ou fenómenos solares, foi decidido manter uma infrastrutura de recurso/”backup”, para mitigar falhas GNSS, baseada numa redede rádio-ajudas terrestres “Distance Measuring Equipment (DME)”. Visto que estes DMEs não facultam uma boa cobertura, especialmente a baixa altitude, e tratando-se de equipamentos próximos da obsolescência tecnológica e pouco eficientes em termos de espectro rádioeléctrico, a sua racionalização requer uma tecnologia alternativa. O presente trabalho explora o recurso a novas tecnologias aeronáuticas de comunicações dados ar-solo, designadamente o futuro “data link” OFDM/TDMA de banda L (LDACS), verificando a sua adequação para suportarem as funções de navegação descritas substituindo os DMEs. Pretende-se confirmar a viabilidade com base no conceito de Navegação Relativa (RELNAV) usado em contexto militar recorrendo a filtros Kalman. As características da tecnologia LDACS são descritas e são apresentados resultados de testes do seu desempenho em termos de medição de distâncias (“ranging”). Com base nas capacidades RELNAV militares são propostos melhoramentos baseadosem filtros Kalman, simulando para demonstrar que o LDACS pode ser usado para funçãode navegação. Demonstrada a viabilidade, fica em aberto a oportunidade para sinergias que poderão viabilizar a racionalização da infrastrutura terrestre de navegação e aviónicos.Abstract: The main purpose of this work is to study an alternative solution for aeronautical aircraft navigation contributing to the rationalization of the existing European ground navigation infrastructure. The emerging Performance Based Navigation (PBN) concept, described in the document 9613 of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), calls for increased reliance on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) (and its augmentation/differential correction systems1) but retaining ground beacons such as the Distance Measuring Equipments (DME) to cope with Global Positioning System (GPS) and GALILEO outages (e.g. jamming/solar storms). The present work will focus on demonstrating the feasibility of an alternative technology to allow the decommissioning of such DME beacons based on the re-use offuture L-Band Air Ground Data Link (LDACS) communication solutions being subject of research studies. Such data links may support the required levels of positioning, navigation and timing required to complement GNSS when the aircraft fly in an area navigation environment. This work will describe the LDACS data link technologies2 and will explain how such communications enablers would be able to support a “relative navigation” function similar to the one available in military data link technologies usinga geodetic grid. The feasibility of the proposed solution will be demonstrated on the basis of lessons learnt from military relative navigation and simulations which will evidence the technical performance/error parameters of the system in terms of ranging, bearing and horizontal positioning and other relevant QoS aspects. In addition, the multipath and co-site interference effects will be also discussed. Should the proposed solution be demonstrated as viable, it may open the door, not only for synergies leading to a more seamless aircraft equipage but also to the rationalization of aeronautical systems in the spectrum band 960-1215 MHz, which is highly congested and subject of stringent non-interference basis operational limitations

    An Efficient ICI Cancellation Technique for OFDM Communication Systems

    A well known problem of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), however, is its sensitivity to frequency offset between the transmitted and received signals, which may be caused by Doppler shift in the channel, or by the difference between the transmitter and receiver local oscillator frequencies. This carrier frequency offset causes loss of orthogonality between sub carriers and the signals transmitted on each carrier are not independent of each other. The orthogonality of the carriers is no longer maintained, which results in inter-carrier interference (ICI). The undesired ICI degrades the performance of the system. Depending on the Doppler spread in the channel and the block length chosen for transmission, ICI can potentially cause a severe deterioration of quality of service (QOS) in OFDM systems. ICI mitigation techniques are essential in improving the performance of an OFDM system in an environment which induces frequency offset error in the transmitted signal. The comparisons of these schemes in terms of various parameters will be useful in determining the choice of ICI mitigation techniques for different applications and mobile environments. This project investigates an efficient ICI cancellation method termed ICI self-cancellation scheme for combating the impact of ICI on OFDM systems. The ICI self-cancellation scheme is a technique in which redundant data is transmitted onto adjacent sub-carriers such that the ICI between adjacent sub-carriers cancels out at the receiver. The main idea is one data symbol is modulated onto a group of adjacent subcarriers with a group of weighting coefficients. By doing so, the ICI signals generated within a group can be ―self-cancelled‖ each other. At the receiver side, by linearly combining the received signals on these subcarriers with proposed coefficients, the residual ICI contained in the received signals can then be further reduced. The carrier-to-interference power ratio (CIR) can be increased by 15 and 30 dB when the group size is two or three, respectively, for a channel with a constant frequency offset. Although the proposed scheme causes a reduction in bandwidth efficiency, it can be compensated, by using larger signal alphabet sizes in modulation. The average carrier-to-interference power ratio (CIR) is used as the ICI level indicator, and a theoretical CIR expression is derived for the proposed scheme. The proposed scheme provides significant CIR improvement, which has been studied theoretically and supported by simulations. Simulation results show that under the condition of the same bandwidth efficiency and larger frequency offsets, the proposed OFDM system using the ICI self-cancellation scheme performs much better than standard OFDM systems in AWGN channel with large Doppler frequencies. In addition, since no channel equalization is needed for reducing ICI, the proposed scheme is therefore beneficial in implementation issue without increasing system complexity

    High mobility in OFDM based wireless communication systems

    Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted as the transmission scheme in most of the wireless systems we use on a daily basis. It brings with it several inherent advantages that make it an ideal waveform candidate in the physical layer. However, OFDM based wireless systems are severely affected in High Mobility scenarios. In this thesis, we investigate the effects of mobility on OFDM based wireless systems and develop novel techniques to estimate the channel and compensate its effects at the receiver. Compressed Sensing (CS) based channel estimation techniques like the Rake Matching Pursuit (RMP) and the Gradient Rake Matching Pursuit (GRMP) are developed to estimate the channel in a precise, robust and computationally efficient manner. In addition to this, a Cognitive Framework that can detect the mobility in the channel and configure an optimal estimation scheme is also developed and tested. The Cognitive Framework ensures a computationally optimal channel estimation scheme in all channel conditions. We also demonstrate that the proposed schemes can be adapted to other wireless standards easily. Accordingly, evaluation is done for three current broadcast, broadband and cellular standards. The results show the clear benefit of the proposed schemes in enabling high mobility in OFDM based wireless communication systems.Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) wurde als Übertragungsschema in die meisten drahtlosen Systemen, die wir täglich verwenden, übernommen. Es bringt mehrere inhärente Vorteile mit sich, die es zu einem idealen Waveform-Kandidaten in der Bitübertragungsschicht (Physical Layer) machen. Allerdings sind OFDM-basierte drahtlose Systeme in Szenarien mit hoher Mobilität stark beeinträchtigt. In dieser Arbeit untersuchen wir die Auswirkungen der Mobilität auf OFDM-basierte drahtlose Systeme und entwickeln neuartige Techniken, um das Verhalten des Kanals abzuschätzen und seine Auswirkungen am Empfänger zu kompensieren. Auf Compressed Sensing (CS) basierende Kanalschätzverfahren wie das Rake Matching Pursuit (RMP) und das Gradient Rake Matching Pursuit (GRMP) werden entwickelt, um den Kanal präzise, robust und rechnerisch effizient abzuschätzen. Darüber hinaus wird ein Cognitive Framework entwickelt und getestet, das die Mobilität im Kanal erkennt und ein optimales Schätzungsschema konfiguriert. Das Cognitive Framework gewährleistet ein rechnerisch optimales Kanalschätzungsschema für alle möglichen Kanalbedingungen. Wir zeigen außerdem, dass die vorgeschlagenen Schemata auch leicht an andere Funkstandards angepasst werden können. Dementsprechend wird eine Evaluierung für drei aktuelle Rundfunk-, Breitband- und Mobilfunkstandards durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen den klaren Vorteil der vorgeschlagenen Schemata bei der Ermöglichung hoher Mobilität in OFDM-basierten drahtlosen Kommunikationssystemen

    Computer programming and IoT are the key skills required in Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0). The industry demand is very high and therefore related students in this field should grasp adequate knowledge and skill in college or university prior to employment. However, learning technology related subject without applying it to an actual hardware can pose difficulty to relate the theoretical knowledge to problems in real application. It is proven that learning through hands-on activities is more effective and promotes deeper understanding of the subject matter (He et al. in Integrating Internet of Things (IoT) into STEM undergraduate education: Case study of a modern technology infused courseware for embedded system course. Erie, PA, USA, pp 1–9 (2016)). Thus, to fulfill the learning requirement, an integrated learning tool that combines learning of computer programming and IoT control for an industrial liquid filling system model is developed and tested. The integrated learning tool uses NodeMCU, Blynk app and smartphone to enable the IoT application. The system set-up is pre-designed for semi-automation liquid filling process to enhance hands-on learning experience but can be easily programmed for full automation. Overall, it is a user and cost friendly learning tool that can be developed by academic staff to aid learning of IoT and computer programming in related education levels and field

    Decentralized Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications through Concurrent Cooperative Transmission

    Emerging cyber-physical systems demand for communication technologies that enable seamless interactions between humans and physical objects in a shared environment. This thesis proposes decentralized URLLC (dURLLC) as a new communication paradigm that allows the nodes in a wireless multi-hop network (WMN) to disseminate data quickly, reliably and without using a centralized infrastructure. To enable the dURLLC paradigm, this thesis explores the practical feasibility of concurrent cooperative transmission (CCT) with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). CCT allows for an efficient utilization of the medium by leveraging interference instead of trying to avoid collisions. CCT-based network flooding disseminates data in a WMN through a reception-triggered low-level medium access control (MAC). OFDM provides high data rates by using a large bandwidth, resulting in a short transmission duration for a given amount of data. This thesis explores CCT-based network flooding with the OFDM-based IEEE 802.11 Non-HT and HT physical layers (PHYs) to enable interactions with commercial devices. An analysis of CCT with the IEEE 802.11 Non-HT PHY investigates the combined effects of the phase offset (PO), the carrier frequency offset (CFO) and the time offset (TO) between concurrent transmitters, as well as the elapsed time. The analytical results of the decodability of a CCT are validated in simulations and in testbed experiments with Wireless Open Access Research Platform (WARP) v3 software-defined radios (SDRs). CCT with coherent interference (CI) is the primary approach of this thesis. Two prototypes for CCT with CI are presented that feature mechanisms for precise synchronization in time and frequency. One prototype is based on the WARP v3 and its IEEE 802.11 reference design, whereas the other prototype is created through firmware modifications of the Asus RT-AC86U wireless router. Both prototypes are employed in testbed experiments in which two groups of nodes generate successive CCTs in a ping-pong fashion to emulate flooding processes with a very large number of hops. The nodes stay synchronized in experiments with 10 000 successive CCTs for various modulation and coding scheme (MCS) indices and MAC service data unit (MSDU) sizes. The URLLC requirement of delivering a 32-byte MSDU with a reliability of 99.999 % and with a latency of 1 ms is assessed in experiments with 1 000 000 CCTs, while the reliability is approximated by means of the frame reception rate (FRR). An FRR of at least 99.999 % is achieved at PHY data rates of up to 48 Mbit/s under line-of-sight (LOS) conditions and at PHY data rates of up to 12 Mbit/s under non-line-of-sight (NLOS) conditions on a 20 MHz wide channel, while the latency per hop is 48.2 µs and 80.2 µs, respectively. With four multiple input multiple output (MIMO) spatial streams on a 40 MHz wide channel, a LOS receiver achieves an FRR of 99.5 % at a PHY data rate of 324 Mbit/s. For CCT with incoherent interference, this thesis proposes equalization with time-variant zero-forcing (TVZF) and presents a TVZF receiver for the IEEE 802.11 Non-HT PHY, achieving an FRR of up to 92 % for CCTs from three unsyntonized commercial devices. As CCT-based network flooding allows for an implicit time synchronization of all nodes, a reception-triggered low-level MAC and a reservation-based high-level MAC may in combination support various applications and scenarios under the dURLLC paradigm

    Modelling, Simulation and Data Analysis in Acoustical Problems

    Modelling and simulation in acoustics is currently gaining importance. In fact, with the development and improvement of innovative computational techniques and with the growing need for predictive models, an impressive boost has been observed in several research and application areas, such as noise control, indoor acoustics, and industrial applications. This led us to the proposal of a special issue about “Modelling, Simulation and Data Analysis in Acoustical Problems”, as we believe in the importance of these topics in modern acoustics’ studies. In total, 81 papers were submitted and 33 of them were published, with an acceptance rate of 37.5%. According to the number of papers submitted, it can be affirmed that this is a trending topic in the scientific and academic community and this special issue will try to provide a future reference for the research that will be developed in coming years
