Threats to Autonomy from Emerging ICT’s
This thesis investigates possible future threats to human autonomy created by
currently emerging ICT’s. Prepared for evaluation as PhD by Publication, it consists of
four journal papers and one book chapter, together with explanatory material.
The ICT’s under examination are drawn from the results of the ETICA project,
which sought to identify emerging ICT’s of ethical import. We first evaluate this
research and identify elements in need of enhancement – the social aspects pertaining to
ethical impact and the need to introduce elements of General Systems Theory in order to
account for ICT’s as socio-technical systems. The first two publications for evaluation
present arguments from marxist and capitalist perspectives which provide an account of
the social dimensions through which an ICT can reduce human autonomy.
There are many competing accounts of what constitutes human autonomy.
These may be grouped into classes by their primary characteristics. The third
publication for evaluation cross-references these classes with the ICT’s identified by the
ETICA project, showing which version of autonomy could be restricted by each ICT
and how. Finally, this paper induces from this analysis some general characteristics
which any ICT must exhibit if it is to restrict autonomy of any form.
Since ICT’s all operate in the same environment, the ultimate effect on the
individual is the aggregated effect of all those ICT’s with which they interact and can be
treated as an open system. Our fourth paper for evaluation therefore develops a theory
of ICT’s as systems of a socio-technical nature, titled “Integrated Domain Theory”. Our
fifth publication uses Integrated Domain Theory to explore the manner in which sociotechnical
systems can restrict human autonomy, no matter how conceived. This thesis
thus offers two complementary answers to the primary research question

This domain is known for its plethora of heterogeneous equipment encompassing distinct functions, form factors, network interfaces, or I/O specifications supported by dissimilar software and hardware platforms. There is then an evident and crescent need to take every device into account and improve the agility performance during setup, control, management, monitoring and diagnosis phases.
Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm is currently a widely endorsed approach
for both business and enterprise systems integration. SOA concepts and technology
are continuously spreading along the layers of the enterprise organization envisioning
a unified interoperability solution. SOA promotes discoverability, loose coupling,
abstraction, autonomy and composition of services relying on open web standards – features that can provide an important contribution to the industrial automation domain.
The present work seized industrial automation device level requirements, constraints and needs to determine how and where can SOA be employed to solve some of the existent difficulties. Supported by these outcomes, a reference architecture shaped by distributed, adaptive and composable modules is proposed. This architecture will assist and ease the role of systems integrators during reengineering-related interventions throughout system lifecycle. In a converging direction, the present work also proposes a serviceoriented
device model to support previous architecture vision and goals by including
embedded added-value in terms of service-oriented peer-to-peer discovery and identification, configuration, management, as well as agile customization of device resources.
In this context, the implementation and validation work proved not simply the feasibility and fitness of the proposed solution to two distinct test-benches but also its relevance to the expanding domain of SOA applications to support device lifecycle in the industrial automation domain
Intelligent Systems
This book is dedicated to intelligent systems of broad-spectrum application, such as personal and social biosafety or use of intelligent sensory micro-nanosystems such as "e-nose", "e-tongue" and "e-eye". In addition to that, effective acquiring information, knowledge management and improved knowledge transfer in any media, as well as modeling its information content using meta-and hyper heuristics and semantic reasoning all benefit from the systems covered in this book. Intelligent systems can also be applied in education and generating the intelligent distributed eLearning architecture, as well as in a large number of technical fields, such as industrial design, manufacturing and utilization, e.g., in precision agriculture, cartography, electric power distribution systems, intelligent building management systems, drilling operations etc. Furthermore, decision making using fuzzy logic models, computational recognition of comprehension uncertainty and the joint synthesis of goals and means of intelligent behavior biosystems, as well as diagnostic and human support in the healthcare environment have also been made easier

Tactful Networking: Humans in the Communication Loop
International audienceThis survey discusses the human-perspective into networking through the Tactful Networking paradigm, whose goal is to add perceptive senses to the network by assigning it with human-like capabilities of observation, interpretation, and reaction to daily-life features and associated entities. To achieve this, knowledge extracted from inherent human behavior in terms of routines, personality, interactions, and others is leveraged, empowering the learning and prediction of user needs to improve QoE and system performance while respecting privacy and fostering new applications and services. Tactful Networking groups solutions from literature and innovative interdisciplinary human aspects studied in other areas. The paradigm is motivated by mobile devices' pervasiveness and increasing presence as a sensor in our daily social activities. With the human element in the foreground, it is essential: (i) to center big data analytics around individuals; (ii) to create suitable incentive mechanisms for user participation; (iii) to design and evaluate both humanaware and system-aware networking solutions; and (iv) to apply prior and innovative techniques to deal with human-behavior sensing and learning. This survey reviews the human aspect in networking solutions through over a decade, followed by discussing the tactful networking impact through literature in behavior analysis and representative examples. This paper also discusses a framework comprising data management, analytics, and privacy for enhancing human raw-data to assist Tactful Networking solutions. Finally, challenges and opportunities for future research are presented
Emerging research directions in computer science : contributions from the young informatics faculty in Karlsruhe
In order to build better human-friendly human-computer interfaces,
such interfaces need to be enabled with capabilities to perceive
the user, his location, identity, activities and in particular his interaction
with others and the machine. Only with these perception capabilities
can smart systems ( for example human-friendly robots or smart environments) become posssible. In my research I\u27m thus focusing on the
development of novel techniques for the visual perception of humans and
their activities, in order to facilitate perceptive multimodal interfaces,
humanoid robots and smart environments. My work includes research
on person tracking, person identication, recognition of pointing gestures,
estimation of head orientation and focus of attention, as well as
audio-visual scene and activity analysis. Application areas are humanfriendly
humanoid robots, smart environments, content-based image and
video analysis, as well as safety- and security-related applications. This
article gives a brief overview of my ongoing research activities in these
areas
