    Optimal scheduling for refueling multiple autonomous aerial vehicles

    The scheduling, for autonomous refueling, of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is posed as a combinatorial optimization problem. An efficient dynamic programming (DP) algorithm is introduced for finding the optimal initial refueling sequence. The optimal sequence needs to be recalculated when conditions change, such as when UAVs join or leave the queue unexpectedly. We develop a systematic shuffle scheme to reconfigure the UAV sequence using the least amount of shuffle steps. A similarity metric over UAV sequences is introduced to quantify the reconfiguration effort which is treated as an additional cost and is integrated into the DP algorithm. Feasibility and limitations of this novel approach are also discussed

    A Consolidated Review of Path Planning and Optimization Techniques: Technical Perspectives and Future Directions

    In this paper, a review on the three most important communication techniques (ground, aerial, and underwater vehicles) has been presented that throws light on trajectory planning, its optimization, and various issues in a summarized way. This kind of extensive research is not often seen in the literature, so an effort has been made for readers interested in path planning to fill the gap. Moreover, optimization techniques suitable for implementing ground, aerial, and underwater vehicles are also a part of this review. This paper covers the numerical, bio-inspired techniques and their hybridization with each other for each of the dimensions mentioned. The paper provides a consolidated platform, where plenty of available research on-ground autonomous vehicle and their trajectory optimization with the extension for aerial and underwater vehicles are documented

    An evolutionary algorithm for online, resource constrained, multi-vehicle sensing mission planning

    Mobile robotic platforms are an indispensable tool for various scientific and industrial applications. Robots are used to undertake missions whose execution is constrained by various factors, such as the allocated time or their remaining energy. Existing solutions for resource constrained multi-robot sensing mission planning provide optimal plans at a prohibitive computational complexity for online application [1],[2],[3]. A heuristic approach exists for an online, resource constrained sensing mission planning for a single vehicle [4]. This work proposes a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based heuristic for the Correlated Team Orienteering Problem (CTOP) that is used for planning sensing and monitoring missions for robotic teams that operate under resource constraints. The heuristic is compared against optimal Mixed Integer Quadratic Programming (MIQP) solutions. Results show that the quality of the heuristic solution is at the worst case equal to the 5% optimal solution. The heuristic solution proves to be at least 300 times more time efficient in the worst tested case. The GA heuristic execution required in the worst case less than a second making it suitable for online execution.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Robotics and Automation Letters (RA-L

However, few of them have been applied to groups of UAVs. The use of swarms allows to speed up the flight time and, thus, reducing the operational costs. When combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, a single system or operator can control all aircraft while optimal paths for each one can be computed. In order to introduce the current situation of these AI-based systems, a review of the most novel and relevant articles was carried out. This review was performed in two steps: first, a summary of the found articles; second, a quantitative analysis of the publications found based on different factors, such as the temporal evolution or the number of articles found based on different criteria. Therefore, this review provides not only a summary of the most recent work but it gives an overview of the trend in the use of AI algorithms in UAV swarms for Path Planning problems. The AI techniques of the articles found can be separated into four main groups based on their technique: reinforcement Learning techniques, Evolutive Computing techniques, Swarm Intelligence techniques, and, Graph Neural Networks.     A High Performance Fuzzy Logic Architecture for UAV Decision Making

    The majority of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in operation today are not truly autonomous, but are instead reliant on a remote human pilot. A high degree of autonomy can provide many advantages in terms of cost, operational resources and safety. However, one of the challenges involved in achieving autonomy is that of replicating the reasoning and decision making capabilities of a human pilot. One candidate method for providing this decision making capability is fuzzy logic. In this role, the fuzzy system must satisfy real-time constraints, process large quantities of data and relate to large knowledge bases. Consequently, there is a need for a generic, high performance fuzzy computation platform for UAV applications. Based on Lees’ [1] original work, a high performance fuzzy processing architecture, implemented in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), has been developed and is shown to outclass the performance of existing fuzzy processors

    Optimal circular flight of multiple UAVs for target tracking in urban areas

    This work is an extension of our previous result in which a novel single-target tracking algorithm for fixed-wing UAVs (Unmanned Air Vehicles) was proposed. Our previous algorithm firstly finds the centre of a circular flight path, rc, over the interested ground target which maximises the total chance of keeping the target inside the camera field of view of UAVs, , while the UAVs fly along the circular path. All the UAVs keep their maximum allowed altitude and fly along the same circle centred at rc with the possible minimum turn radius of UAVs. As discussed in [1,4], these circular flights are highly recommended for various target tracking applications especially in urban areas, as for each UAV the maximum altitude flight ensures the maximum visibility and the minimum radius turn keeps the minimum distance to the target at the maximum altitude. Assuming a known probability distribution for the target location, one can quantify , which is incurred by the travel of a single UAV along an arbitrary circle, using line-of-sight vectors. From this observation, (the centre of) an optimal circle among numerous feasible ones can be obtained by a gradient-based search combined with random sampling, as suggested in [1]. This optimal circle is then used by the other UAVs jointly tracking the same target. As the introduction of multiple UAVs may minimise further, the optimal spacing between the UAVs can be naturally considered. In [1], a typical line search method is suggested for this optimal spacing problem. However, as one can easily expect, the computational complexity of this search method may undesirably increase as the number of UAVs increases. The present work suggests a remedy for this seemingly complex optimal spacing problem. Instead of depending on time-consuming search techniques, we develop the following algorithm, which is computationally much more efficient. Firstly, We calculate the distribution (x), where x is an element of , which is the chance of capturing the target by one camera along . Secondly, based on the distribution function, (x), find separation angles between UAVs such that the target can be always tracked by at least one UAV with a guaranteed probabilistic measure. Here, the guaranteed probabilistic measure is chosen by taking into account practical constraints, e.g. required tracking accuracy and UAVs' minimum and maximum speeds. Our proposed spacing scheme and its guaranteed performance are demonstrated via numerical simulations

    Comparison of 3D Versus 4D Path Planning for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    This research compares 3D versus 4D (three spatial dimensions and the time dimension) multi-objective and multi-criteria path-planning for unmanned aerial vehicles in complex dynamic environments. In this study, we empirically analyse the performances of 3D and 4D path planning approaches. Using the empirical data, we show that the 4D approach is superior over the 3D approach especially in complex dynamic environments. The research model consisting of flight objectives and criteria is developed based on interviews with an experienced military UAV pilot and mission planner to establish realism and relevancy in  unmanned aerial vehicle flight planning. Furthermore, this study incorporates one of the most comprehensive set of criteria identified during our literature search. The simulation results clearly show that the 4D path planning approach is able to provide solutions in complex dynamic environments in which the 3D approach could not find a solution
