To facilitate computer analysis of visual art, in the form of paintings, we introduce Pandora (Paintings Dataset for Recognizing the Art movement) database, a collection of digitized paintings labelled with respect to the artistic movement. Noting that the set of databases available as benchmarks for evaluation is highly reduced and most existing ones are limited in variability and number of images, we propose a novel large scale dataset of digital paintings. The database consists of more than 7700 images from 12 art movements. Each genre is illustrated by a number of images varying from 250 to nearly 1000. We investigate how local and global features and classification systems are able to recognize the art movement. Our experimental results suggest that accurate recognition is achievable by a combination of various categories. To facilitate computer analysis of visual art, in the form of paintings, we introduce Pandora (Paintings Dataset for Recognizing the Art movement) database, a collection of digitized paintings labelled with respect to the artistic movement. In the painting production process, repairing of paint work defects by running the part through repeat process, together with the essential requirement quality control routines, account for a very large proportion of the operating costs. The dust and fibre defects is ranged between 40% and 50% and found to be the highest rejection from one of the local industry painting line. Hence that, this research is focused to study the effectiveness of simulating this painting line using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) method to identify the air flow and turbulence pattern which may help to understand the particle concentration and movement in the painting line. Six mechanical designs of ventilation system was proposed in order to study the particle movement and concentration to this automotive painting line. From here, the best design which suite the objective of minimizing the particle concentration and its dissipation into the painted part are justified. Hence, improvement action such as layout arrangement and mechanical design are factors involved to overcome and minimize the foreign particle from fall down into the parts during the painting process. The result from this study may also be a benchmarking for future design of new automotive painting line. © 2019, Penerbit Akademia Baru. All rights reserved

Modeling On-Line Art Auction Dynamics Using Functional Data Analysis

In this paper, we examine the price dynamics of on-line art auctions of modern Indian art using functional data analysis. The purpose here is not just to understand what determines the final prices of art objects, but also the price movement during the entire auction. We identify several factors, such as artist characteristics (established or emerging artist; prior sales history), art characteristics (size; painting medium--canvas or paper), competition characteristics (current number of bidders; current number of bids) and auction design characteristics (opening bid; position of the lot in the auction), that explain the dynamics of price movement in an on-line art auction. We find that the effects on price vary over the duration of the auction, with some of these effects being stronger at the beginning of the auction (such as the opening bid and historical prices realized). In some cases, the rate of change in prices (velocity) increases at the end of the auction (for canvas paintings and paintings by established artists). Our analysis suggests that the opening bid is positively related to on-line auction price levels of art at the beginning of the auction, but its effect declines toward the end of the auction. The order in which the lots appear in an art auction is negatively related to the current price level, with this relationship decreasing toward the end of the auction. This implies that lots that appear earlier have higher current prices during the early part of the auction, but that effect diminishes by the end of the auction. Established artists show a positive relationship with the price level at the beginning of the auction. Reputation or popularity of the artists and their investment potential as assessed by previous history of sales are positively related to the price levels at the beginning of the auction. The medium (canvas or paper) of the painting does not show any relationship with art auction price levels, but the size of the painting is negatively related to the current price during the early part of the auction. Important implications for auction design are drawn from the analysis.Comment: Published at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/088342306000000196 in the Statistical Science (http://www.imstat.org/sts/) by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (http://www.imstat.org

    Three Landscapes For Orchestra

    Get PDF
Three Landscapes for Orchestra is a three-movement orchestral suite, with music composed based on corresponding artworks. Each movement is inspired by an abstract painting by Samantha Keely Smith. Stylistically, the focus of these pieces is on color and mood, and the emulation of the atmosphere and emotions elicited by the source material. As such, the music either takes a literal approach to musical representations of certain aesthetic features, or an abstract approach wherein the music conveys a similar emotion or mood as the painting. Musically, the approach taken is an amalgamation of Late-Romantic, twentieth century, and twelve-tone styles, with influences from composers such as Gustav Mahler, Benjamin Britten, John Adams, and Arnold Schoenberg
