    Food habits and dietary variability of pelagic nekton off Oregon and Washington, 1979-1984

    The food habits of 20 species of pelagic nekton were investigated from collections made with small-mesh purse seines from 1979-84 off Washington and Oregon. Four species (spiny dogfish, Squalus acanthias; soupfin shark, Galeorhinus zyopterus; blue shark, Prionace glauca; and cutthroat trout, Salmo clarki) were mainly piscivorous. Six species (coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch; chinook salmon, O. tshawytscha; black rockfish, Sebastes melanops; yellowtail rockfish, S. f1avidus; sablefish, Anoplopoma fimbria; and jack mackerel, Trachurus symmetricus) consumed both nektonic and planktonic organisms. The remaining species (market squid, Loligo opalescens; American shad, Alosa sapidissima; Pacific herring, Clupea harengus pallasi; northern anchovy, Engraulis mordax; pink salmon, O. gorbuscha; surf smelt, Hypomesus pretiosus; Pacific hake, Merluccius productus; Pacific saury, Cololabis saira; Pacific mackerel, Scomber japonicus; and medusafish, Icichthys lockingtom) were primarily planktonic feeders. There were substantial interannual, seasonal, and geographic variations in the diets of several species due primarily to changes in prey availability.     Temporal and Spatial Distribution of Finfish Bycatch in the U.S. Atlantic Bottom Longline Shark Fishery

    Bycatch in U.S. fisheries has become an increasingly important issue to both fisheries managers and the public, owing to the wide range of marine resources that can be involved. From 2002 to 2006, the Commercial Shark Fishery Observer Program (CSFOP) and the Shark Bottom Longline Observer Program (SBLOP) collected data on catch and bycatch caught on randomly selected vessels of the U.S. Atlantic shark bottom longline fishery. Three subregions (eastern Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, Mid-Atlantic Bight), five years (2002–06), four hook types (small, medium, large, and other), seven depth ranges (300 m), and eight broad taxonomic categories (e.g. Selachimorpha, Batoidea, Serranidae, etc.) were used in the analyses. Results indicated that the majority of bycatch (number) was caught in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and that the Selachimorpha taxon category made up over 90% of the total bycatch.     The Edwards Creek site (41Ff549) was found during the course of a 2005 archaeological survey of a proposed small lake project in the adjoining Indian Creek stream valley in southeastern Freestone County, Texas. The site was identified while reconnoitering the general project area, and at that time a darkly stained midden area was noted on the surface here, with animal bones and other artifacts visible across it. With the permission of the landowner, we returned to the Edwards Creek site to investigate the site and its midden deposits

    Identification of an osteocalcin isoform in fish with a large acidic prodomain

    Osteocalcin is a small, secreted bone protein whose gene consists of four exons. In the course of analyzing the structure of fish osteocalcin genes, we recently found that the spotted green pufferfish has two possible exon 2 structures, one of 15 bp and the other of 324 bp. Subsequent analysis of the pufferfish cDNA showed that only the transcript with a large exon 2 exists. Exon 2 codes for the osteocalcin propeptide, and exon 2 of pufferfish osteocalcin is ∼3.4-fold larger than exon 2 previously found in other vertebrate species. We have termed this new pufferfish osteocalcin isoform OC2. Additional studies showed that the OC2 isoform is restricted to a unique fish taxonomic group, the Osteichthyes; OC2 is the only osteocalcin isoform found so far in six Osteichthyes species, whereas both OC1 and OC2 isoforms coexist in zebrafish and rainbow trout. The larger size of the OC2 propeptide is due to an acidic region that is likely to be highly phosphorylated and has no counterpart in the OC1 propeptide. We propose 1) that OC1 and OC2 are encoded by distinct genes that originated from a duplication event that probably occurred in the teleost fish lineage soon after divergence from tetrapods and 2) that the novel OC2 propeptide could be, if secreted, a phosphoprotein that participates in the regulation of biomineralization through its large acidic and phosphorylated propeptide

    Biology of growth of Hoplias aff. malabaricus (Bloch, 1794) in a shallow pampean lake Argentina

    The trahira Hoplias aff. malabaricus is a top predator in pampean shallow lakes and is highly appreciated by recreational anglers and artisanal fishermen. Trahira growth from Yalca shallow lake was determined by lepidological analysis and age validated by marginal increment. When growth was fitted to the von Bertalanffy model, annual classes exhibited a bimodal pattern as a result of the presence of spring and summer annual cohorts associated with a three month spawning season, each period in turn showing different growth patterns. The trahira population-age structure at Yalca shallow lake showed a truncated profile with very low numbers of large adults and few individuals older than three to four years, thus producing an unbalanced length-structure population. Growth parameters and growth performance were similar to the corresponding parameters estimated for other shallow pampean lakes of the region, but strongly diverged from the data for those populations inhabiting subtropical and tropical environments. Such differences could be accounted for by dissimilarity in metabolic rates associated with thermal differences accompanying seasonal variability among latitudes as well as by the development of adaptive physiologic and demographic responses to cope with the high thermal amplitude and hydrologic instability observed in pampean lakes.A traíra Hoplias aff. malabaricus é um predador de topo encontrado em lagoas rasas nos Pampas, muito apreciada nas pescas comerciais e esportivas. O crescimento da traíra no lago Yalca foi determinado através de análises lepidológicas, validadas a partir do incremento marginal. O crescimento foi ajustado ao modelo de von Bertalanffy, sendo que as classes de tamanho anuais apresentaram padrão bimodal devido à presença de coortes de primavera e verão, associadas à uma longa estação reprodutiva com diferentes padrões de crescimento. A estrutura etária da traíra do lago Yalca apresentou um perfil truncado, com um número pequeno de adultos de maior porte e poucos indivíduos com mais de três ou quatro anos, produzindo uma estrutura em tamanho desbalanceada. Os parâmetros e a performance de crescimento foram similares aos estimados para outros lagos rasos da região, mas fortemente divergentes de populações encontradas em ambientes tropicais e subtropicais. Tais diferenças podem estar relacionadas à diferentes taxas metabólicas associadas à variação térmica sazonal entre latitudes e ao desenvolvimento de respostas adaptativas fisiológicas e demográficas em resposta aos padrões termais altamente variáveis e instabilidade hidrológica observados nos lagos da região dos Pampas.Fil: Balboni, Leandro.     Length-weight relationship and the diets of Clarias lazera (Cuvier and Valenciennes), family Clariidae (Osteichthyes: Siluriformes) in Zaria, Nigeria

    The length-weight relationship and the diets of Clarias lazera were investigated between July 1981 and June 1982. About 450 specimens were examined. The standard lengths of the fish ranged from 8.5 cm to 42.2 cm. Significant differences were found between the standard lengths of the males and females with the latter slightly shorter. Somatic weights varied between 10 g to 502 g. Length-weight regression analysis gave a "b" value of 3.02 for both males and females combined; thus indicating an isometric growth. Analysis of the food in the stomachs showed that the fish is an omnivore although, it fed more on insects and fish than other food item
