Investigating distributed simulation at the Ford motor company
Engine production is a complex process that requires the manufacturing and assembly of a wide variety of components to create a varied product mix. Simulation plays a key role in the planning process of a new production line to determine if it can meet expected demand. However, these simulations can be very time consuming and can often take up to a day to execute a single run. This paper investigates how distributed simulation based on the IEEE 1516 High Level Architecture and the emerging standard COTS Simulation Package Interoperability Product Development Group (CSPI-PDG) Type I Interoperability Reference Model could be used to reduce the time taken for a single simulation run. CSP interoperability and the problem of integrating CSPs with HLA software (the runtime infrastructure) are presented. New prototype benchmarking software, the COTS Simulation Package Emulator (CSPE), which is being developed to investigate distributed simulation problems, is discussed. The paper then develops a case study of how this was used to investigate the feasibility of using distributed simulation at Ford. The paper discusses results obtained from this case study and suggests that distributed simulation could indeed be beneficial to Ford

COTS simulation package (CSP) interoperability - A solution to synchronous entity passing
In this paper we examine Commercial-Off-The- Shelf (COTS) Simulation Package (CSP) interoperability for one type of distributed simulation problem, namely synchronous entity passing. Synchronous entity passing is also referred to as the bounded buffer interoperability reference model. It deals with the case where for entities passed between models the receiving queue is bounded or the receiving workstation has limited capacity. This means the sending model must check the status of the receiving model before it can send entities. Correspondingly, the receiving model should update the status information dynamically when it changes. Similar to the work done on asynchronous entity passing, the High Level Architecture is chosen as the underlying standard to support reuse and interoperability. To simplify the integration of the CSP and the HLA, a middleware layer called DSManager is provided. Some new problems generated for synchronous entity passing are discussed and solutions are proposed together with a description of their implementation. Two sets of experiments are conducted to evaluate the solutions using a CSP Emulator (CSPE) which supports both standalone and distributed simulation
Distributed Hybrid Simulation of the Internet of Things and Smart Territories
This paper deals with the use of hybrid simulation to build and compose
heterogeneous simulation scenarios that can be proficiently exploited to model
and represent the Internet of Things (IoT). Hybrid simulation is a methodology
that combines multiple modalities of modeling/simulation. Complex scenarios are
decomposed into simpler ones, each one being simulated through a specific
simulation strategy. All these simulation building blocks are then synchronized
and coordinated. This simulation methodology is an ideal one to represent IoT
setups, which are usually very demanding, due to the heterogeneity of possible
scenarios arising from the massive deployment of an enormous amount of sensors
and devices. We present a use case concerned with the distributed simulation of
smart territories, a novel view of decentralized geographical spaces that,
thanks to the use of IoT, builds ICT services to manage resources in a way that
is sustainable and not harmful to the environment. Three different simulation
models are combined together, namely, an adaptive agent-based parallel and
distributed simulator, an OMNeT++ based discrete event simulator and a
script-language simulator based on MATLAB. Results from a performance analysis
confirm the viability of using hybrid simulation to model complex IoT

Distributed simulation of building systems for legacy software reuse
The use of integrated building performance simulation can substantially help in improving a building design with regards to comfort levels and fuel consumption, while reducing emission of greenhouse gasses. However, the traditional tools that are closed for inter-communication, limit the modeler to use of components only available within that particular package. This paper gives an overview of distributed simulation approach that can alleviate above limitation. Each program can represent only a part of a building system that is able to model, exchanging the necessary information during the execution and bridging the gaps between the tools. Several important issues closely connected with its implementation, such as synchronization, are pointed out, and the sensitivity of a model on different coupling strategies is studied. The paper concludes with highlighting the gained flexibility in modeling and simulation of building performance that arises from the distributed approach
Optimistic synchronization in the HLA 1516.1-2010: interoperably challenged
Time Management can be considered as one of the key achievements of the High Level Architecture for Modeling and Simulation (HLA). While HLA’s time management is supposed to offer a unique support for heterogeneous time advancement schemes, its practical use is often limited to conservative time advancement (e.g. using services such as nextMessageRequest/nextMessageRequestAvailable) or time stepped time advancement (e.g. using services such as timeAdvanceRequest/timeAdvanceRequestAvailable). In this paper, we investigate HLA’s capabilities for supporting optimistic time advancement and the interoperability between optimistic and conservative federates. The results are strikingly disappointing. While HLA had initially taken off with the noble vision of federations including both optimistic and conservative federates within a single federation execution, the current implementations of two leading RTI vendors fall short of achieving this objective. Neither do they enable the efficient execution of federations consisting of purely optimistically synchronized federates nor do they facilitate interoperability between optimistic and conservative federates. This paper documents the observed problems and discusses potential limitations in the IEEE HLA 1516.1-2010 specification and its interpretation by RTI vendors
An empirical evaluation of techniques for parallel simulation of message passing networks
209 p.[EN]In the field of computer design, simulation is an essential tool to validate and evaluate architectural proposals. Conventional simulation techniques, designed for their use in sequential computers, are too slow if the system to simulate is large or complex. The aim of this work is to search for techniques to accelerate simulations exploiting the parallelism available in current, commercial multicomputers, and to use these techniques to study a model of a message router. This router has been designed to constitute the communication infrastructure of a (hypothetical) massively parallel computer.
Three parallel simulation techniques have been considered: synchronous, asynchronous-conservative and asynchronous-optimistic. These algorithms have been implemented in three multicomputers: a transputer-based Supernode, an Intel Paragon and a network of workstations. The influence that factors such as the characteristics of the simulated models, the organization of the simulators and the characteristics of the target multicomputers have in the performance of the simulations has been measured and characterized.
It is concluded that optimistic parallel simulation techniques are not suitable for the considered kind of models, although they may provide good performance in other environments. A network of workstations is not the right platform for our experiments, because the communication demands of the parallel simulators surpass the abilities of local area networks—the granularity is too fine. Synchronous and conservative parallel simulation techniques perform very well in the Supernode and in the Paragon, specially if the model to simulate is complex or large—precisely the worst case for traditional, sequential simulators. This way, studies previously considered as unrealizable, due to their exceedingly high computational cost, can be performed in reasonable times. Additionally, the spectrum of possibilities of using multicomputers can be broadened to execute more than numeric applications.[ES]En el ámbito del diseño de computadores, la simulación es una herramienta imprescindible para la validación y evaluación de cualquier propuesta arquitectónica. Las ténicas convencionales de simulación, diseñadas para su utilización en computadores secuenciales, son demasiado lentas si el sistema a simular es grande o complejo. El objetivo de esta tesis es buscar técnicas para acelerar estas simulaciones, aprovechando el paralelismo disponible en multicomputadores comerciales, y usar esas técnicas para el estudio de un modelo de encaminador de mensajes. Este encaminador está diseñado para formar infraestructura de comunicaciones de un hipotético computador masivamente paralelo.
En este trabajo se consideran tres técnicas de simulación paralela: síncrona, asíncrona-conservadora y asíncrona-optimista. Estos algoritmos se han implementado en tres multicomputadores: un Supernode basado en Transputers, un Intel Paragon y una red de estaciones de trabajo. Se caracteriza la influencia que tienen en las prestaciones de los simuladores aspectos tales como los parámetros del modelo simulado, la organización del simulador y las características del multicomputador utilizado.
Se concluye que las técnicas de simulación paralela optimista no resultan adecuadas para trabajar con el modelo considerado, aunque pueden ofrecer un buen rendimiento en otros entornos. La red de estaciones de trabajo no resulta una plataforma apropiada para estas simulaciones, ya que una red local no reúne condiciones para la ejecución de aplicaciones paralelas de grano fino. Las técnicas de simulación paralela síncrona y conservadora dan muy buenos resultados en el Supernode y en el Paragon, especialmente si el modelo a simular es complejo o grande—precisamente el peor caso para los algoritmos secuenciales. De esta forma, estudios previamente considerados inviables, por ser demasiado costosos computacionalmente, pueden realizarse en tiempos razonables. Distributed Simulation: State-of-the-Art and Potential for Operational Research
In Operational Research conventional simulation practices typically focus on the conceptualization, development and use of a single model simulated on a single computer by a single analyst. Since the late 1970s the field of Distributed Simulation has led research into how to speed up simulation and how to compose large-scale simulations consisting of many reusable models running using distributed computers. There have been significant advances in the theories and technologies underpinning Distributed Simulation and there have been major successes in defence, computer systems design and smart urban environments. However, from an Operational Research perspective, Distributed Simulation has had little impact on mainstream research and practice. To argue the potential benefits of Distributed Simulation for Operational Research, this article gives an overview of Distributed Simulation approaches and technologies as well as discussing the state-of-the-art of Distributed Simulation applications. It will investigate the potential advantages of Distributed Simulation for Operational Research and present a possible sustainable future, based on experiences from e-Science, that will help Operational Research meet future challenges such as those emerging from Big Data Analytics, Cyber-physical systems, Industry 4.0, Digital Twins and Smart environments
Automatic Algorithm Selection for Complex Simulation Problems
To select the most suitable simulation algorithm for a given task is often difficult. This is due to intricate interactions between model features, implementation details, and runtime environment, which may strongly affect the overall performance. The thesis consists of three parts. The first part surveys existing approaches to solve the algorithm selection problem and discusses techniques to analyze simulation algorithm performance.The second part introduces a software
framework for automatic simulation algorithm selection, which is evaluated in the third part.Die Auswahl des passendsten Simulationsalgorithmus für eine bestimmte Aufgabe ist oftmals schwierig. Dies liegt an der komplexen Interaktion zwischen Modelleigenschaften, Implementierungsdetails und Laufzeitumgebung. Die Arbeit ist in drei Teile gegliedert. Der erste Teil befasst sich eingehend mit Vorarbeiten zur automatischen Algorithmenauswahl, sowie mit der Leistungsanalyse von Simulationsalgorithmen. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit stellt ein Rahmenwerk zur automatischen Auswahl von Simulationsalgorithmen vor, welches dann im dritten Teil evaluiert wird
