    ROUTING IN MOBILE AD-HOC NETWORKS: SCALABILITY AND EFFICIENCY

    Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) have received considerable research interest in recent years. Because of dynamic topology and limited resources, it is challenging to design routing protocols for MANETs. In this dissertation, we focus on the scalability and efficiency problems in designing routing protocols for MANETs. We design the Way Point Routing (WPR) model for medium to large networks. WPR selects a number of nodes on a route as waypoints and divides the route into segments at the waypoints. Waypoint nodes run a high-level inter-segment routing protocol, and nodes on each segment run a low-level intra-segment routing protocol. We use DSR and AODV as the inter-segment and the intra-segment routing protocols, respectively. We term this instantiation the DSR Over AODV (DOA) routing protocol. We develop Salvaging Route Reply (SRR) to salvage undeliverable route reply (RREP) messages. We propose two SRR schemes: SRR1 and SRR2. In SRR1, a salvor actively broadcasts a one-hop salvage request to find an alternative path to the source. In SRR2, nodes passively learn an alternative path from duplicate route request (RREQ) packets. A salvor uses the alternative path to forward a RREP when the original path is broken. We propose Multiple-Target Route Discovery (MTRD) to aggregate multiple route requests into one RREQ message and to discover multiple targets simultaneously. When a source initiates a route discovery, it first tries to attach its request to existing RREQ packets that it relays. MTRD improves routing performance by reducing the number of regular route discoveries. We develop a new scheme called Bilateral Route Discovery (BRD), in which both source and destination actively participate in a route discovery process. BRD consists of two halves: a source route discovery and a destination route discovery, each searching for the other. BRD has the potential to reduce control overhead by one half. We propose an efficient and generalized approach called Accumulated Path Metric (APM) to support High-Throughput Metrics (HTMs). APM finds the shortest path without collecting topology information and without running a shortest-path algorithm. Moreover, we develop the Broadcast Ordering (BO) technique to suppress unnecessary RREQ transmissions

In such a network there is no need of any infrastructure. Ad - hoc networks routing protocols are classified into two categories: Proactive/table - driven and reactive/on - demand. Reactive rou ting protocol is used whenever a communication is requested. There are two types of reactive protocols: AODV (Ad hoc on - demand distance vector protocol) and DSR (Dynamic source routing protocol). In one type of scenario one protocol may perform best while another may perform worst, so there is a need to determine an optimal one out of these in a more dynamic environment. The differences in the working of these protocols lead to significant performance differentials for both of these protocol

    A Highly-Available Multiple Region Multi-access Edge Computing Platform with Traffic Failover

    One of the main challenges in the Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) is steering traffic from clients to the nearest MEC instances. If the nearest MEC fails, a failover mechanism should provide mitigation by steering the traffic to the next nearest MEC. There are two conventional approaches to solve this problem, i.e., GeoDNS and Internet Protocol (IP) anycast. GeoDNS is not failover friendly because of the Domain Name System (DNS) cache lifetime. Moreover, the use of a recursive resolver may inaccurately translate the IP address to its geolocation. Thus, this thesis studies and proposes a highly available MEC platform leveraging IP anycast. We built a proof-of-concept using Kubernetes, MetalLB, and a custom health-checker running on the GNS3 network emulator. We measured latency, failure percentage, and Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) to observe the system's behavior. The performance evaluation of the proposed solution shows an average recovery time better than one second. The number of failed requests and latency overhead grows linearly as the failover time and latency between two MECs increases. This thesis demonstrates the effectiveness of IP anycast for MEC applications to steer the traffic to the nearest MEC instance and to enhance resiliency with minor overhead

    QoS routing in ad-hoc networks using GA and multi-objective optimization

    Much work has been done on routing in Ad-hoc networks, but the proposed routing solutions only deal with the best effort data traffic. Connections with Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, such as voice channels with delay and bandwidth constraints, are not supported. The QoS routing has been receiving increasingly intensive attention, but searching for the shortest path with many metrics is an NP-complete problem. For this reason, approximated solutions and heuristic algorithms should be developed for multi-path constraints QoS routing. Also, the routing methods should be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent. In this paper, we use Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and multi-objective optimization for QoS routing in Ad-hoc Networks. In order to reduce the search space of GA, we implemented a search space reduction algorithm, which reduces the search space for GAMAN (GA-based routing algorithm for Mobile Ad-hoc Networks) to find a new route. We evaluate the performance of GAMAN by computer simulations and show that GAMAN has better behaviour than GLBR (Genetic Load Balancing Routing).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Enhancing Performance by Salvaging Route Reply Messages in On-Demand Routing Protocols for MANETs

    Researchers prefer on-demand routing protocols in mobile ad hoc networks where resources such as energy and bandwidth are constrained. In these protocols, a source discovers a route to a destination typically by flooding the entire or a part of the network with a route request (RREQ) message. The destination responds by sending a route reply (RREP) message to the source. The RREP travels hop by hop on the discovered route in the reverse direction or on another route to the source. Sometimes the RREP can not be sent to the intended next hop by an intermediate node due to node mobility or network congestion. Existing on-demand routing protocols handle the undeliverable RREP as a normal data packet - discard the packet and initiate a route error message. This is highly undesirable because a RREP message has a lot at stake – it is obtained at the cost of a large number of RREQ transmissions, which is an expensive and timeconsuming process. In this paper, we propose the idea of salvaging route reply (SRR) to improve the performance of on-demand routing protocols. We present two schemes to salvage an undeliverable RREP. Scheme one actively sends a one-hop salvage request message to find an alternative path to the source, while scheme two passively maintains a backup path to the source. Furthermore, we present the design of two SRR schemes in AODV and prove that routes are loop-free after a salvaging. We conduct extensive simulations to evaluate the performance of SRR, and the simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the SRR approach

    We point out the different performance problems that need to be addressed when considering mobility in IP networks. We also define the reference architecture and present a framework to classify the different solutions for mobility management in IP networks. The performance of the major candidate micro-mobility solutions is evaluated for both real-time (UDP) and data (TCP) traffic through simulation and by means of an analytical model. Using these models we compare the performance of different mobility management schemes for different data and real-time services and the network resources that are needed for it. We point out the problems of TCP in wireless environments and review some proposed enhancements to TCP that aim at improving TCP performance. We make a detailed study of how some of micro-mobility protocols namely Cellular IP, Hawaii and Hierarchical Mobile IP affect the behavior of TCP and their interaction with the MAC layer. We investigate the impact of handoffs on TCP by means of simulation traces that show the evolution of segments and acknowledgments during handoffs.Publicad

    On-demand Multipath Routing Protocols for Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks: A Comparative Survey

    A Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is an infrastructure-less, self-organized and multi-hop network with a rapidly changing topology causing the wireless links to be broken at any time. Routing in such a network is challenging due to the mobility of its nodes and the challenge becomes more difficult when the network size increases. Due to the limited capacity of a multi-hop path and the high dynamics of wireless links, the single-path routing approach is unable to provide efficient high data rate transmission in MANETs. The multipath routing is the routing technique of using multiple alternative paths through a network. Furthermore, whenever a link failure is detected on a primary route, the source node can select the optimal route among multiple available routes. Therefore, the multipath routing approach is broadly utilized as one of the possible solutions to overcome the single-path limitation. Most of the multipath routing protocols are based on Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV). The objective of this paper is to provide a survey and compare sets of multipath routing protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks. This survey will motivate the design of new multipath routing protocols, which overcome the weaknesses identified in this paper

    The role of the RPL routing protocol for smart grid communications

    Advanced communication/networking technologies should be integrated in next-generation power systems (a.k.a. smart grids) to improve their resilience, efficiency, adaptability, and sustainability. Many believe that the smart grid communication infrastructure will emerge from the interconnection of a large number of small-scale networks organized into a hierarchical architecture covering larger geographic areas. In this article, first we carry out a thorough analysis of the key components of the smart grid communication architecture, discussing the different network topologies and communication technologies that could be employed. Special emphasis is given to the advanced metering infrastructure, which will be used to interconnect the smart meters deployed at customers\u27 premises with data aggregators and control centers. The design of scalable, reliable, and efficient networking solutions for AMI systems is an important research problem because these networks are composed of thousands of resource-constrained embedded devices usually interconnected with communication technologies that can provide only low-bandwidth and unreliable links. The IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks was recently standardized by the IETF to specifically meet the requirements of typical AMI applications. In this article we present a thorough overview of the protocol, and we critically analyze its advantages and potential limits in AMI applications. We also conduct a performance evaluation of RPL using a Contiki-based prototype of the RPL standard and a network emulator. Our results indicate that although average performance may appear reasonable for AMI networks, a few RPL nodes may suffer from severe unreliability issues and experience high packet loss rates due to the selection of suboptimal paths with highly unreliable links
