Technological advances of recent years laid the foundation consolidation of informatisationof society, impacting on economic, political, cultural and socialdimensions. At the peak of this realization, today, more and more everydaydevices are connected to the web, giving the term ”Internet of Things”. The futureholds the full connection and interaction of IT and communications systemsto the natural world, delimiting the transition to natural cyber systems and offeringmeta-services in the physical world, such as personalized medical care, autonomoustransportation, smart energy cities etc. . Outlining the necessities of this dynamicallyevolving market, computer engineers are required to implement computingplatforms that incorporate both increased systemic complexity and also cover awide range of meta-characteristics, such as the cost and design time, reliabilityand reuse, which are prescribed by a conflicting set of functional, technical andconstruction constraints. This thesis aims to address these design challenges bydeveloping methodologies and hardware/software co-design tools that enable therapid implementation and efficient synthesis of architectural solutions, which specifyoperating meta-features required by the modern market. Specifically, this thesispresents a) methodologies to accelerate the design flow for both reconfigurableand application-specific architectures, b) coarse-grain heterogeneous architecturaltemplates for processing and communication acceleration and c) efficient multiobjectivesynthesis techniques both at high abstraction level of programming andphysical silicon level.Regarding to the acceleration of the design flow, the proposed methodologyemploys virtual platforms in order to hide architectural details and drastically reducesimulation time. An extension of this framework introduces the systemicco-simulation using reconfigurable acceleration platforms as co-emulation intermediateplatforms. Thus, the development cycle of a hardware/software productis accelerated by moving from a vertical serial flow to a circular interactive loop. Moreover the simulation capabilities are enriched with efficient detection and correctiontechniques of design errors, as well as control methods of performancemetrics of the system according to the desired specifications, during all phasesof the system development. In orthogonal correlation with the aforementionedmethodological framework, a new architectural template is proposed, aiming atbridging the gap between design complexity and technological productivity usingspecialized hardware accelerators in heterogeneous systems-on-chip and networkon-chip platforms. It is presented a novel co-design methodology for the hardwareaccelerators and their respective programming software, including the tasks allocationto the available resources of the system/network. The introduced frameworkprovides implementation techniques for the accelerators, using either conventionalprogramming flows with hardware description language or abstract programmingmodel flows, using techniques from high-level synthesis. In any case, it is providedthe option of systemic measures optimization, such as the processing speed, the throughput, the reliability, the power consumption and the design silicon area. Finally, on addressing the increased complexity in design tools of reconfigurablesystems, there are proposed novel multi-objective optimization evolutionary algo-rithms which exploit the modern multicore processors and the coarse-grain natureof multithreaded programming environments (e.g. OpenMP) in order to reduce theplacement time, while by simultaneously grouping the applications based on theirintrinsic characteristics, the effectively explore the design space effectively. The efficiency of the proposed architectural templates, design tools and methodologyflows is evaluated in relation to the existing edge solutions with applicationsfrom typical computing domains, such as digital signal processing, multimedia andarithmetic complexity, as well as from systemic heterogeneous environments, suchas a computer vision system for autonomous robotic space navigation and manyacceleratorsystems for HPC and workstations/datacenters. The results strengthenthe belief of the author, that this thesis provides competitive expertise to addresscomplex modern - and projected future - design challenges.Οι τεχνολογικές εξελίξεις των τελευταίων ετών έθεσαν τα θεμέλια εδραίωσης της πληροφοριοποίησης της κοινωνίας, επιδρώντας σε οικονομικές,πολιτικές, πολιτιστικές και κοινωνικές διαστάσεις. In this chapter, we present a literature survey of an emerging, cutting-edge, and multi-disciplinary field of research at the intersection of Robotics and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which we refer to as Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks (RWSN). We define a RWSN as an autonomous networked multi-robot system that aims to achieve certain sensing goals while meeting and maintaining certain communication performance requirements, through cooperative control, learning and adaptation. While both of the component areas, i.e., Robotics and WSN, are very well-known and well-explored, there exist a whole set of new opportunities and research directions at the intersection of these two fields which are relatively or even completely unexplored. One such example would be the use of a set of robotic routers to set up a temporary communication path between a sender and a receiver that uses the controlled mobility to the advantage of packet routing. We find that there exist only a limited number of articles to be directly categorized as RWSN related works whereas there exist a range of articles in the robotics and the WSN literature that are also relevant to this new field of research. To connect the dots, we first identify the core problems and research trends related to RWSN such as connectivity, localization, routing, and robust flow of information. Next, we classify the existing research on RWSN as well as the relevant state-of-the-arts from robotics and WSN community according to the problems and trends identified in the first step. Lastly, we analyze what is missing in the existing literature, and identify topics that require more research attention in the future

Gidarien lanaren plangintza egoki batek zuzenki eragiten du garraio publikoko enpresen kostu operatiboan. Tripulazioaren plangintzaren zailtasuna bi arrazoiengatik ematen da bereziki (Esclapés 2001, Bonrostro, Yusta 2003, Ernst et al. 2004, Van den Bergh et al. 2013, Ibarra-Rojas et al. 2015, Li et al. 2015): alde batetik, gidarien plangintza beste arazo handiago baten parte da, ibilgailu eta gidarien plangintzaren arazoaren parte. Bestalde, garraio sareen arteko ezberdintasunek, enpresen baliabideen arteko ezberdintasunek edota arautegi edo lan-akordioen arteko ezberdintasunek, enpresa bakoitzarentzako soluzio partikular bat garatzea behartzen dute. Ikerketa honen helburu nagusia "algoritmo eraginkor bat garatzea da, zeinek exekuzio denbora apropos baten, eta lehen, azken edo beste edozein bitarteko geldialditan errelebua baimenduz, hiriarteko sare baten diharduen garraio publikoko autobus konpainia batek behar duen tripulazioa minimizatzen duen". Horrela, eta konpainia erreal baten tripulazioaren planifikazioa oinarritzat hartuta, literaturan aurkitutako bi ikerketa-hutsune aztertu dira. Alde batetik, zenbatetan mugatu ezak eta lehen, azken edo beste edozein bitarteko geldialditan errelebuak baimentzeak daukan inpaktua aztertuko da. Bestalde, planifikatzerakoan ezaugarri ezberdinak dituzten zerbitzuek errestrikzio ezberdinak kontsideratzea behartzen dutenean, planifikazio prozesua aztertu da. Bi prozedura aztertu dira: arazoa zerbitzuen ezaugarrien araberako planifikazio independentetan banatzea edo errestrikzio gogorrenak kontsideratuta, planifikazio bakar bat osatzea. Ikerketaren metodologiari dagokionez, Eragiketen Ikerketako (Winston, Goldberg 2004) zazpi urratsak jarraitu dira: (1) arazoa formulatzea, (2) sistemaren behaketa, (3) arazoaren eredua formulatu, (4) eredua egiaztatzea eta aurreikuspenerako erabiltzea, (5) aukera egokia aukeratzea, (6) azterketaren emaitzak eta ondorioak aurkeztea eta (7) gomendioak ezartzea eta ebaluatzea. Emaitzen arabera, kasu batzuetan ikertu diren bi faktoreek emaitza hobeagoak dakartzatela baieztatu da.A proper crew scheduling impacts on the operational cost of public transport companies. The difficulty of the crew scheduling is due to two main aspects (Esclapés 2001, Bonrostro, Yusta 2003, Ernst et al. 2004, Van den Bergh et al. 2013, Ibarra-Rojas et al. 2015, Li et al. 2015): first, it is part of a larger problem, the Vehicle and Crew Scheduling Problem. Second, the differences among network features, resources of companies, regulatory restrictions or labour agreements make the solutions particular to each company. The main objective of the present research work is “to develop an efficient algorithm which minimizes in an acceptable execution time the Crew Scheduling Problem of an interurban passenger public transport bus company, allowing unlimited drivers’ reliefs that can occur at first, last or any other intermediate stop of a line”. So, using this tool on a real company’s crew scheduling problem, two research gaps found in the analysis of the literature have been examined. On one hand, the impact of allowing unlimited drivers’ reliefs that can occur at first, last or any other intermediate stop of a line. On the other hand, the impact of the scheduling procedure when restrictions vary depending on the type of service that is included in the duty. Two procedures have been studied: dividing the problem into independent problems or scheduling globally under the most limited restrictions. Concerning the research methodology, the seven steps of Operations Research (Winston, Goldberg 2004) have been followed: (1) formulate the problem, (2) observe the system, (3) formulate a model of the problem, (4) verify the model and use the model for prediction, (5) select a suitable alternative, (6) present the results and conclusion of the study and (7) implement and evaluate the recommendations. The results show that occasionally it is worthy to consider both investigated factors

Cloud Computing Strategies for Enhancing Smart Grid Performance in Developing Countries

In developing countries, the awareness and development of Smart Grids are in the introductory stage and the full realisation needs more time and effort. Besides, the partially introduced Smart Grids are inefficient, unreliable, and environmentally unfriendly. As the global economy crucially depends on energy sustainability, there is a requirement to revamp the existing energy systems. Hence, this research work aims at cost-effective optimisation and communication strategies for enhancing Smart Grid performance on Cloud platforms

Fabric-on-a-Chip: Toward Consolidating Packet Switching Functions on Silicon

The switching capacity of an Internet router is often dictated by the memory bandwidth required to bu¤er arriving packets. With the demand for greater capacity and improved service provisioning, inherent memory bandwidth limitations are encountered rendering input queued (IQ) switches and combined input and output queued (CIOQ) architectures more practical. Output-queued (OQ) switches, on the other hand, offer several highly desirable performance characteristics, including minimal average packet delay, controllable Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning and work-conservation under any admissible traffic conditions. However, the memory bandwidth requirements of such systems is O(NR), where N denotes the number of ports and R the data rate of each port. Clearly, for high port densities and data rates, this constraint dramatically limits the scalability of the switch. In an effort to retain the desirable attributes of output-queued switches, while significantly reducing the memory bandwidth requirements, distributed shared memory architectures, such as the parallel shared memory (PSM) switch/router, have recently received much attention. The principle advantage of the PSM architecture is derived from the use of slow-running memory units operating in parallel to distribute the memory bandwidth requirement. At the core of the PSM architecture is a memory management algorithm that determines, for each arriving packet, the memory unit in which it will be placed. However, to date, the computational complexity of this algorithm is O(N), thereby limiting the scalability of PSM switches. In an effort to overcome the scalability limitations, it is the goal of this dissertation to extend existing shared-memory architecture results while introducing the notion of Fabric on a Chip (FoC). In taking advantage of recent advancements in integrated circuit technologies, FoC aims to facilitate the consolidation of as many packet switching functions as possible on a single chip. Accordingly, this dissertation introduces a novel pipelined memory management algorithm, which plays a key role in the context of on-chip output- queued switch emulation. We discuss in detail the fundamental properties of the proposed scheme, along with hardware-based implementation results that illustrate its scalability and performance attributes. To complement the main effort and further support the notion of FoC, we provide performance analysis of output queued cell switches with heterogeneous traffic. The result is a flexible tool for obtaining bounds on the memory requirements in output queued switches under a wide range of tra¢ c scenarios. Additionally, we present a reconfigurable high-speed hardware architecture for real-time generation of packets for the various traffic scenarios. The work presented in this thesis aims at providing pragmatic foundations for designing next-generation, high-performance Internet switches and routers

Control oriented modelling of an integrated attitude and vibration suppression architecture for large space structures

This thesis is divided into two parts. The main focus of the research, namely active vibration control for large flexible spacecraft, is exposed in Part I and, in parallel, the topic of machine learning techniques for modern space applications is described in Part II. In particular, this thesis aims at proposing an end-to-end general architecture for an integrated attitude-vibration control system, starting from the design of structural models to the synthesis of the control laws. To this purpose, large space structures based on realistic missions are investigated as study cases, in accordance with the tendency of increasing the size of the scientific instruments to improve their sensitivity, being the drawback an increase of its overall flexibility. An active control method is therefore investigated to guarantee satisfactory pointing and maximum deformation by avoiding classical stiffening methods. Therefore, the instrument is designed to be supported by an active deployable frame hosting an optimal minimum set of collocated smart actuators and sensors. Different spatial configurations for the placement of the distributed network of active devices are investigated, both at closed-loop and open-loop levels. Concerning closed-loop techniques, a method to optimally place the poles of the system via a Direct Velocity Feedback (DVF) controller is proposed to identify simultaneously the location and number of active devices for vibration control with an in-cascade optimization technique. Then, two general and computationally efficient open-loop placement techniques, namely Gramian and Modal Strain Energy (MSE)-based methods, are adopted as opposed to heuristic algorithms, which imply high computational costs and are generally not suitable for high-dimensional systems, to propose a placement architecture for generically shaped tridimensional space structures. Then, an integrated robust control architecture for the spacecraft is presented as composed of both an attitude control scheme and a vibration control system. To conclude the study, attitude manoeuvres are performed to excite main flexible modes and prove the efficacy of both attitude and vibration control architectures. Moreover, Part II is dedicated to address the problem of improving autonomy and self-awareness of modern spacecraft, by using machine-learning based techniques to carry out Failure Identification for large space structures and improving the pointing performance of spacecraft (both flexible satellite with sloshing models and small rigid platforms) when performing repetitive Earth Observation manoeuvres
