    IberSPEECH 2020: XI Jornadas en TecnologĂ­a del Habla and VII Iberian SLTech

    IberSPEECH2020 is a two-day event, bringing together the best researchers and practitioners in speech and language technologies in Iberian languages to promote interaction and discussion. The organizing committee has planned a wide variety of scientific and social activities, including technical paper presentations, keynote lectures, presentation of projects, laboratories activities, recent PhD thesis, discussion panels, a round table, and awards to the best thesis and papers. The program of IberSPEECH2020 includes a total of 32 contributions that will be presented distributed among 5 oral sessions, a PhD session, and a projects session. To ensure the quality of all the contributions, each submitted paper was reviewed by three members of the scientific review committee. All the papers in the conference will be accessible through the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA) Online Archive. Paper selection was based on the scores and comments provided by the scientific review committee, which includes 73 researchers from different institutions (mainly from Spain and Portugal, but also from France, Germany, Brazil, Iran, Greece, Hungary, Czech Republic, Ucrania, Slovenia). Furthermore, it is confirmed to publish an extension of selected papers as a special issue of the Journal of Applied Sciences, “IberSPEECH 2020: Speech and Language Technologies for Iberian Languages”, published by MDPI with fully open access.     Hierarchical feature extraction from spatiotemporal data for cyber-physical system analytics

    With the advent of ubiquitous sensing, robust communication and advanced computation, data-driven modeling is increasingly becoming popular for many engineering problems. Eliminating diïŹƒculties of physics-based modeling, avoiding simplifying assumptions and ad hoc empirical models are signiïŹcant among many advantages of data-driven approaches, especially for large-scale complex systems. While classical statistics and signal processing algorithms have been widely used by the engineering community, advanced machine learning techniques have not been suïŹƒciently explored in this regard. This study summarizes various categories of machine learning tools that have been applied or may be a candidate for addressing engineering problems. While there are increasing number of machine learning algorithms, the main steps involved in applying such techniques to the problems consist in: data collection and pre-processing, feature extraction, model training and inference for decision-making. To support decision-making processes in many applications, hierarchical feature extraction is key. Among various feature extraction principles, recent studies emphasize hierarchical approaches of extracting salient features that is carried out at multiple abstraction levels from data. In this context, the focus of the dissertation is towards developing hierarchical feature extraction algorithms within the framework of machine learning in order to solve challenging cyber-physical problems in various domains such as electromechanical systems and agricultural systems. Furthermore, the feature extraction techniques are described using the spatial, temporal and spatiotemporal data types collected from the systems. The wide applicability of such features in solving some selected real-life domain problems are demonstrated throughout this study

    Understanding and Securing Voice Assistant Applications

    Internet of Things (IoT) has evolved from a traditional sensor network to an increasingly cloud dependent ecosystem. This transition empowers IoT devices with abundant outsourced computational power. However, securing IoT devices is still a challenging task. The reason is that many IoT devices nowadays perform complicated tasks (e.g., voice assistants or VA) and are connected to different third parties. This research targets popular VA services such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, which are rapidly appifying their platforms to allow a more flexible and diverse voice-controlled service experience. Unfortunately, third-party skills have been reportedly posing threats to user privacy and security. The goal of this research is to conduct a systematic security analysis for different stages of a VA system, i.e., acoustic channel, speech processing, intent extraction, and application processing. Moreover, based on the analysis, corresponding defense strategies are proposed and evaluated. First, I investigate speech re-use problems in the acoustic channel. I then propose a security overlay named AEOLUS to tackle the speech re-use threat. Second, I study the speech processing stage by evaluating adversarial attacks targeting VA’s speaker recognition systems. I present a novel attention-based audio perturbation scheme to help improve the efficiency and imperceptibility of generating audio adversarial examples. Third, I assess the intent extraction of VA to understand the root cause of semantic misinterpretation. A linguistic-guided fuzzing scheme is then proposed to evaluate the problem systematically in a large scale. Fourth, for VA application (or skill) processing stage, I conduct a user study with Alexa users to learn about how users perceive existing warning messages for voice assistant applications

    Multidisciplinary perspectives on Artificial Intelligence and the law

    This open access book presents an interdisciplinary, multi-authored, edited collection of chapters on Artificial Intelligence (‘AI’) and the Law. AI technology has come to play a central role in the modern data economy. Through a combination of increased computing power, the growing availability of data and the advancement of algorithms, AI has now become an umbrella term for some of the most transformational technological breakthroughs of this age. The importance of AI stems from both the opportunities that it offers and the challenges that it entails. While AI applications hold the promise of economic growth and efficiency gains, they also create significant risks and uncertainty. The potential and perils of AI have thus come to dominate modern discussions of technology and ethics – and although AI was initially allowed to largely develop without guidelines or rules, few would deny that the law is set to play a fundamental role in shaping the future of AI.     An Unsupervised Cluster: Learning Water Customer Behavior Using Variation of Information on a Reconstructed Phase Space

    The unsupervised clustering algorithm described in this dissertation addresses the need to divide a population of water utility customers into groups based on their similarities and differences, using only the measured flow data collected by water meters. After clustering, the groups represent customers with similar consumption behavior patterns and provide insight into ‘normal’ and ‘unusual’ customer behavior patterns. This research focuses upon individually metered water utility customers and includes both residential and commercial customer accounts serviced by utilities within North America. The contributions of this dissertation not only represent a novel academic work, but also solve a practical problem for the utility industry. This dissertation introduces a method of agglomerative clustering using information theoretic distance measures on Gaussian mixture models within a reconstructed phase space. The clustering method accommodates a utility’s limited human, financial, computational, and environmental resources. The proposed weighted variation of information distance measure for comparing Gaussian mixture models places emphasis upon those behaviors whose statistical distributions are more compact over those behaviors with large variation and contributes a novel addition to existing comparison options

    This Special Issue, entitled "Women in Artificial Intelligence" includes 17 papers from leading women scientists. The papers cover a broad scope of research areas within Artificial Intelligence, including machine learning, perception, reasoning or planning, among others. The papers have applications to relevant fields, such as human health, finance, or education. It is worth noting that the Issue includes three papers that deal with different aspects of gender bias in Artificial Intelligence. All the papers have a woman as the first author. We can proudly say that these women are from countries worldwide, such as France, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, Australia, Bangladesh, Yemen, Romania, India, Cuba, Bangladesh and Spain. In conclusion, apart from its intrinsic scientific value as a Special Issue, combining interesting research works, this Special Issue intends to increase the invisibility of women in AI, showing where they are, what they do, and how they contribute to developments in Artificial Intelligence from their different places, positions, research branches and application fields. We planned to issue this book on the on Ada Lovelace Day (11/10/2022), a date internationally dedicated to the first computer programmer, a woman who had to fight the gender difficulties of her times, in the XIX century. We also thank the publisher for making this possible, thus allowing for this book to become a part of the international activities dedicated to celebrating the value of women in ICT all over the world.
