Stability and bifurcations in an epidemic model with varying immunity period
An epidemic model with distributed time delay is derived to describe the
dynamics of infectious diseases with varying immunity. It is shown that
solutions are always positive, and the model has at most two steady states:
disease-free and endemic. It is proved that the disease-free equilibrium is
locally and globally asymptotically stable. When an endemic equilibrium exists,
it is possible to analytically prove its local and global stability using
Lyapunov functionals. Bifurcation analysis is performed using DDE-BIFTOOL and
traceDDE to investigate different dynamical regimes in the model using
numerical continuation for different values of system parameters and different
integral kernels.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
Relaxation oscillations, pulses, and travelling waves in the diffusive Volterra delay-differential equation
The diffusive Volterra equation with discrete or continuous delay is studied in the limit of long delays using matched asymptotic expansions. In the case of continuous delay, the procedure was explicitly carried out for general normalized kernels of the form Sigma/sub n=p//sup N/ g/sub n/(t/sup n//T/sup n+1/)e/sup -t/T/, pges2, in the limit in which the strength of the delayed regulation is much greater than that of the instantaneous one, and also for g/sub n/=delta/sub n2/ and any strength ratio. Solutions include homogeneous relaxation oscillations and travelling waves such as pulses, periodic wavetrains, pacemakers and leading centers, so that the diffusive Volterra equation presents the main features of excitable media
Estimation of Solutions of Differential Systems with Delayed Argument of Neutral Type
Tato disertační práce pojednává o řešení diferenciálních rovnic a systémů diferenciálních rovnic. This dissertation discusses the solutions to the differential equation and to systems of differential equations. The main attention is paid to study of asymptotical properties of equations with delay and systems of equations with delay. In the first chapter are given physical and technical examples described by differential equations with delay and their systems. The classification of equations with delay is given and basic notions of theory of stability are formulated (mainly with the emphasis on the Lyapunov second method). In the second chapter estimates of solutions of equations of neutral type are studied. The third chapter deals with systems of differential equations of neutral type. Asymptotic estimates for solutions and their derivatives are proved. At the end of the chapter examples and comparisons of our results and of other authors are given. The calculation were performed with the MATLAB software. Last, the fourth chapter deals with asymptotical properties of systems having a special type of nonlinearities, so called ``sector nonlinearities''. Properties and estimations of solutions and derivatives are derived. The basic tools used in the dissertation are the Lyapunov second method and functionals of Lyapunov-Krasovskii type.
On the origin of quantum mechanics
Action at distance in Newtonian physics is replaced by finite propagation
speeds in classical post--Newtonian physics. As a result, the differential
equations of motion in Newtonian physics are replaced by functional
differential equations, where the delay associated with the finite propagation
speed is taken into account. Newtonian equations of motion, with
post--Newtonian corrections, are often used to approximate the functional
differential equations. Are the finite propagation speeds the origin of the
quantum mechanics? In this work a simple atomic model based on a functional
differential equation which reproduces the quantized Bohr atomic model is
presented. As straightforward application of the result the fine structure of
the hydrogen atom is approached.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure in EPS forma
A delay differential model of ENSO variability: Parametric instability and the distribution of extremes
We consider a delay differential equation (DDE) model for El-Nino Southern
Oscillation (ENSO) variability. The model combines two key mechanisms that
participate in ENSO dynamics: delayed negative feedback and seasonal forcing.
We perform stability analyses of the model in the three-dimensional space of
its physically relevant parameters. Our results illustrate the role of these
three parameters: strength of seasonal forcing , atmosphere-ocean coupling
, and propagation period of oceanic waves across the Tropical
Pacific. Two regimes of variability, stable and unstable, are separated by a
sharp neutral curve in the plane at constant . The detailed
structure of the neutral curve becomes very irregular and possibly fractal,
while individual trajectories within the unstable region become highly complex
and possibly chaotic, as the atmosphere-ocean coupling increases. In
the unstable regime, spontaneous transitions occur in the mean ``temperature''
({\it i.e.}, thermocline depth), period, and extreme annual values, for purely
periodic, seasonal forcing. The model reproduces the Devil's bleachers
characterizing other ENSO models, such as nonlinear, coupled systems of partial
differential equations; some of the features of this behavior have been
documented in general circulation models, as well as in observations. We
expect, therefore, similar behavior in much more detailed and realistic models,
where it is harder to describe its causes as completely.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figure
Mean field approximation for noisy delay coupled excitable neurons
Mean field approximation of a large collection of FitzHugh-Nagumo excitable
neurons with noise and all-to-all coupling with explicit time-delays, modelled
by stochastic delay-differential equations is derived. The resulting
approximation contains only two deterministic delay-differential equations but
provides excellent predictions concerning the stability and bifurcations of the
averaged global variables of the exact large system.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure
