    Smart handoff technique for internet of vehicles communication using dynamic edge-backup node

Nowadays, IoV has turned into an interesting field of research as vehicles can be equipped with processors, sensors, and communication devices. IoV gives rise to handoff, which involves changing the connection points during the online communication session. This presents a major challenge for which many standardized solutions are recommended. Although there are various proposed techniques and methods to support seamless handover procedure in IoV, there are still some open research issues, such as unavoidable packet loss rate and latency. On the other hand, the emerged concept of edge mobile computing has gained crucial attention by researchers that could help in reducing computational complexities and decreasing communication delay. Hence, this paper specifically studies the handoff challenges in cluster based handoff using new concept of dynamic edge-backup node. The outcomes are evaluated and contrasted with the network mobility method, our proposed technique, and other cluster-based technologies. The results show that coherence in communication during the handoff method can be upgraded, enhanced, and improved utilizing the proposed technique.Published onlin

    Vehicle Monitoring System based On IOT, Using 4G/LTE

    In our World of today, the quest to get rich at all cost without working for our money has led some of our youth into crimes such as robbery and kidnapping. As a result of this and by the sheer fact that vehicles are now very expensive to buy these days, there is a need for people to safeguard their vehicles against these hoodlums to avoid loss of their precious Assets to these rampaging criminals. Tracking is technology that is used by many companies and individuals to track a vehicle, an individual or an asset by using many ways like GPS that operates using satellites and ground-based stations or by using our approach which depends on the cellular mobile towers. Vehicle tracking system is a system that can be used in monitoring and locating a vehicle, avoid theft or recover a stolen vehicle, for monitoring of vehicle routes to ensure strict compliance to an already defined vehicle routes, monitor driver’s behavior, predict bus arrival as well as for fleet management. Internet of things has made it very possible to devices to inter communicate amongst themselves and exchange information, helping in acquiring and analyzing information faster that we used to know in the past and this has helped more especially in vehicle monitoring to ensure that vehicle owners feel safe about their investments without fearing about their loss. In this paper, we propose a vehicle monitoring system based on IOT technology, using 4G/LTE to get the get the coordinate, speed, and overall condition of the vehicle, process and send to a remote server to be analyzed and used in locating the vehicle and monitor its other configured parameters. This is realized using Raspberry pi, 4G/LTE, GPS, Accelerometer and other sensors with communicate amongst themselves to get the environmental parameters which is processed and sent to a remote server where it is analyzed and represented on a map to locate the vehicle and monitor the other set parameters. 4G/LTE provides fast internet connectivity with overcomes the usual delay usually experienced in sending the acquired signals to be processed. The True Vehicle position is represented using google geolocation service and the actual position triangulated in real-time

    Automatic Accident Detection: Assistance Through Communication Technologies and Vehicles

    [EN] The symbiosis between communication technologies and vehicles offer a priceless opportunity to improve assistance to people injured in traffic accidents, providing information about the incident to reduce the response time of emergency services. Determining more accurately the required human and material resources for each particular accident could significantly reduce the number of victims. This paper presents our novel system prototype especially designed to detect and provide faster assistance for traffic accidents, thereby minimizing the consequences on the passengers¿ health. The proposed system requires each vehicle to be endowed with an On-Board Unit responsible for detecting and reporting accident situations to an external Control Unit that estimates its severity, allocating the necessary resources for the rescue operation.     Data Acquisition, Analysis and Transmission Platform for a Pay-As-You-Drive System

    This paper presents a platform used to acquire, analyse and transmit data from a vehicle to a Control Centre as part of a Pay-As-You-Drive system. The aim is to monitor vehicle usage (how much, when, where and how) and, based on this information, assess the associated risk and set an appropriate insurance premium. To determine vehicle usage, the system analyses the driver’s respect for speed limits, driving style (aggressive or non-aggressive), mobile telephone use and the number of vehicle passengers. An electronic system on board the vehicle acquires these data, processes them and transmits them by mobile telephone (GPRS/UMTS) to a Control Centre, at which the insurance company assesses the risk associated with vehicles monitored by the system. The system provides insurance companies and their customers with an enhanced service and could potentially increase responsible driving habits and reduce the number of road accidents

    Electric Power Allocation in a Network of Fast Charging Stations

    In order to increase the penetration of electric vehicles, a network of fast charging stations that can provide drivers with a certain level of quality of service (QoS) is needed. However, given the strain that such a network can exert on the power grid, and the mobility of loads represented by electric vehicles, operating it efficiently is a challenging problem. In this paper, we examine a network of charging stations equipped with an energy storage device and propose a scheme that allocates power to them from the grid, as well as routes customers. We examine three scenarios, gradually increasing their complexity. In the first one, all stations have identical charging capabilities and energy storage devices, draw constant power from the grid and no routing decisions of customers are considered. It represents the current state of affairs and serves as a baseline for evaluating the performance of the proposed scheme. In the second scenario, power to the stations is allocated in an optimal manner from the grid and in addition a certain percentage of customers can be routed to nearby stations. In the final scenario, optimal allocation of both power from the grid and customers to stations is considered. The three scenarios are evaluated using real traffic traces corresponding to weekday rush hour from a large metropolitan area in the US. The results indicate that the proposed scheme offers substantial improvements of performance compared to the current mode of operation; namely, more customers can be served with the same amount of power, thus enabling the station operators to increase their profitability. Further, the scheme provides guarantees to customers in terms of the probability of being blocked by the closest charging station.     SCALABLE AND EFFICIENT VERTICAL HANDOVER DECISION ALGORITHMS IN VEHICULAR NETWORK CONTEXTS

    A finales de los años noventa, y al comienzo del nuevo milenio, las redes inalámbricas han evolucionado bastante, pasando de ser sólo una tecnología prometedora para convertirse en un requisito para las actividades cotidianas en las sociedades desarrolladas. La infraestructura de transporte también ha evolucionado, ofreciendo comunicación a bordo para mejorar la seguridad vial y el acceso a contenidos de información y entretenimiento. Los requisitos de los usuarios finales se han hecho dependientes de la tecnología, lo que significa que sus necesidades de conectividad han aumentado debido a los diversos requisitos de las aplicaciones que se ejecutan en sus dispositivos móviles, tales como tabletas, teléfonos inteligentes, ordenadores portátiles o incluso ordenadores de abordo (On-Board Units (OBUs)) dentro de los vehículos. Para cumplir con dichos requisitos de conectividad, y teniendo en cuenta las diferentes redes inalámbricas disponibles, es necesario adoptar técnicas de Vertical Handover (VHO) para cambiar de red de forma transparente y sin necesidad de intervención del usuario. El objetivo de esta tesis es desarrollar algoritmos de decisión (Vertical Handover Decision Algorithms (VHDAs)) eficientes y escalables, optimizados para el contexto de las redes vehiculares. En ese sentido se ha propuesto, desarrollado y probado diferentes algoritmos de decisión basados en la infraestructura disponible en las actuales, y probablemente en las futuras, redes inalámbricas y redes vehiculares. Para ello se han combinado diferentes técnicas, métodos computacionales y modelos matemáticos, con el fin de garantizar una conectividad apropiada, y realizando el handover hacia las redes más adecuadas de manera a cumplir tanto con los requisitos de los usuarios como los requisitos de las aplicaciones. New 'disruptive' technologies may initiate the emergence of new regional industrial clusters and/or create new opportunities for further development of existing ones. However, they may also result in stagnation and decline of the latter. The term disruptive refers to such significant changes in the basic technologies that may change the industrial landscape, even in the shorter run.
