Comparison of Max-Plus Automata and Joint Spectral Radius of Tropical Matrices

    Get PDF
Weighted automata over the tropical semiring Zmax are closely related to finitely generated semigroups of matrices over Zmax. In this paper, we use results in automata theory to study two quantities associated with sets of matrices: the joint spectral radius and the ultimate rank. We prove that these two quantities are not computable over the tropical semiring, i.e. there is no algorithm that takes as input a finite set of matrices S and provides as output the joint spectral radius (resp. the ultimate rank) of S. On the other hand, we prove that the joint spectral radius is nevertheless approximable and we exhibit restricted cases in which the joint spectral radius and the ultimate rank are computable. To reach this aim, we study the problem of comparing functions computed by weighted automata over the tropical semiring. This problem is known to be undecidable, and we prove that it remains undecidable in some specific subclasses of automata

Green's J-order and the rank of tropical matrices

We study Green's J-order and J-equivalence for the semigroup of all n-by-n matrices over the tropical semiring. We give an exact characterisation of the J-order, in terms of morphisms between tropical convex sets. We establish connections between the J-order, isometries of tropical convex sets, and various notions of rank for tropical matrices. We also study the relationship between the relations J and D; Izhakian and Margolis have observed that DJD \neq J for the semigroup of all 3-by-3 matrices over the tropical semiring with -\infty, but in contrast, we show that D=JD = J for all full matrix semigroups over the finitary tropical semiring.Comment: 21 pages, exposition improve

Reachability problems for products of matrices in semirings

We consider the following matrix reachability problem: given rr square matrices with entries in a semiring, is there a product of these matrices which attains a prescribed matrix? We define similarly the vector (resp. scalar) reachability problem, by requiring that the matrix product, acting by right multiplication on a prescribed row vector, gives another prescribed row vector (resp. when multiplied at left and right by prescribed row and column vectors, gives a prescribed scalar). We show that over any semiring, scalar reachability reduces to vector reachability which is equivalent to matrix reachability, and that for any of these problems, the specialization to any r2r\geq 2 is equivalent to the specialization to r=2r=2. As an application of this result and of a theorem of Krob, we show that when r=2r=2, the vector and matrix reachability problems are undecidable over the max-plus semiring (Z{},max,+)(Z\cup\{-\infty\},\max,+). We also show that the matrix, vector, and scalar reachability problems are decidable over semirings whose elements are ``positive'', like the tropical semiring (N{+},min,+)(N\cup\{+\infty\},\min,+).Comment: 21 page
