    Flexible Management on BSP Process Rescheduling: Offering Migration at Middleware and Application Levels

    This article describes the rationales for developing jMigBSP - a Java programming library that offers object rescheduling. It was designed to work on grid computing environments and offers an interface that follows the BSP (Bulk Synchronous Parallel) style. jMigBSP’s main contribution focuses on the rescheduling facility in two different ways: (i) by using migration directives on the application coded irectly and (ii) through automatic load balancing at middleware level. Especially, this second idea is feasible thanks to the Java’s inheritance feature, in which transforms a simple jMigBSP application in amigratable one only by changing a single line of code. In addition, the presented library makes the object interaction easier by providing one-sided message passing directives and hides network latency through asynchronous communications. Finally, we developed three BSP applications: (i) Prefix Sum; (ii) Fractal Image Compression (FIC) and; (iii) Fast Fourier Transform (FFT).They show our library as viable solution to offer load balancing on BSP applications. Specially, the FIC results present gains up to 37% when applying migration directives inside the code. Finally, the FFT tests emphasize strength of jMigBSP. In this situation, it outperforms a native library denoted BSPlib when migration facilities take place.Keywords: Bulk Synchronous Parallel, rescheduling, Java, adaptation, object migration, grid computing

    Production Scheduling

    Generally speaking, scheduling is the procedure of mapping a set of tasks or jobs (studied objects) to a set of target resources efficiently. More specifically, as a part of a larger planning and scheduling process, production scheduling is essential for the proper functioning of a manufacturing enterprise. This book presents ten chapters divided into five sections. Section 1 discusses rescheduling strategies, policies, and methods for production scheduling. Section 2 presents two chapters about flow shop scheduling. Section 3 describes heuristic and metaheuristic methods for treating the scheduling problem in an efficient manner. In addition, two test cases are presented in Section 4. The first uses simulation, while the second shows a real implementation of a production scheduling system. Finally, Section 5 presents some modeling strategies for building production scheduling systems. This book will be of interest to those working in the decision-making branches of production, in various operational research areas, as well as computational methods design. People from a diverse background ranging from academia and research to those working in industry, can take advantage of this volume

    Quality of Service in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks: Methodical Evaluation and Enhancements for ITS-G5

    After many formative years, the ad hoc wireless communication between vehicles has become a vehicular technology available in mass production cars in 2020. Vehicles form spontaneous Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs), which enable communication whenever vehicles are nearby without need for supportive infrastructure. In Europe, this communication is standardised comprehensively as Intelligent Transport Systems in the 5.9 GHz band (ITS-G5). This thesis centres around Quality of Service (QoS) in these VANETs based on ITS-G5 technology. Whilst only a few vehicles communicate, radio resources are plenty, and channel congestion is a minor issue. With progressing deployment, congestion control becomes crucial to preserve QoS by preventing high latencies or foiled information dissemination. The developed VANET simulation model, featuring an elaborated ITS-G5 protocol stack, allows investigation of QoS methodically. It also considers the characteristics of ITS-G5 radios such as the signal attenuation in vehicular environments and the capture effect by receivers. Backed by this simulation model, several enhancements for ITS-G5 are proposed to control congestion reliably and thus ensure QoS for its applications. Modifications at the GeoNetworking (GN) protocol prevent massive packet occurrences in a short time and hence congestion. Glow Forwarding is introduced as GN extension to distribute delay-tolerant information. The revised Decentralized Congestion Control (DCC) cross-layer supports low-latency transmission of event-triggered, periodic and relayed packets. DCC triggers periodic services and manages a shared duty cycle budget dedicated to packet forwarding for this purpose. Evaluation in large-scale networks reveals that this enhanced ITS-G5 system can reliably reduce the information age of periodically sent messages. The forwarding budget virtually eliminates the starvation of multi-hop packets and still avoids congestion caused by excessive forwarding. The presented enhancements thus pave the way to scale up VANETs for wide-spread deployment and future applications

    Conformance Checking and Simulation-based Evolutionary Optimization for Deployment and Reconfiguration of Software in the Cloud

    Many SaaS providers nowadays want to leverage the cloud's capabilities also for their existing applications, for example, to enable sound scalability and cost-effectiveness. This thesis provides the approach CloudMIG that supports SaaS providers to migrate those applications to IaaS and PaaS-based cloud environments. CloudMIG consists of a step-by-step process and focuses on two core components. (1) Restrictions imposed by specific cloud environments (so-called cloud environment constraints (CECs)), such as a limited file system access or forbidden method calls, can be validated by an automatic conformance checking approach. (2) A cloud deployment option (CDO) determines which cloud environment, cloud resource types, deployment architecture, and runtime reconfiguration rules for exploiting a cloud's elasticity should be used. The implied performance and costs can differ in orders of magnitude. CDOs can be automatically optimized with the help of our simulation-based genetic algorithm CDOXplorer. Extensive lab experiments and an experiment in an industrial context show CloudMIG's applicability and the excellent performance of its two core components

    Supporting IT Service Fault Recovery with an Automated Planning Method

    Despite advances in software and hardware technologies, faults are still inevitable in a highly-dependent, human-engineered and administrated IT environment. Given the critical role of IT services today, it is imperative that faults, having once occurred, have to be dealt with eciently and eeffectively to avoid or reduce the actual losses. Nevertheless, the complexities of current IT services, e.g., with regard to their scales, heterogeneity and highly dynamic infrastructures, make the recovery operation a challenging task for operators. Such complexities will eventually outgrow the human capability to manage them. Such diculty is augmented by the fact that there are few well-devised methods available to support fault recovery. To tackle this issue, this thesis aims at providing a computer-aided approach to assist operators with fault recovery planning and, consequently, to increase the eciency of recovery activities.We propose a generic framework based on the automated planning theory to generate plans for recoveries of IT services. At the heart of the framework is a planning component. Assisted by the other participants in the framework, the planning component aggregates the relevant information and computes recovery steps accordingly. The main idea behind the planning component is to sustain the planning operations with automated planning techniques, which is one of the research fields of articial intelligence. Provided with a general planning model, we show theoretically that the service fault recovery problem can be indeed solved by automated planning techniques. The relationship between a planning problem and a fault recovery problem is shown by means of reduction between these problems. After an extensive investigation, we choose a planning paradigm that based on Hierarchical Task Networks (HTN) as the guideline for the design of our main planning algorithm called H2MAP. To sustain the operation of the planner, a set of components revolving around the planning component is provided. These components are responsible for tasks such as translation between dierent knowledge formats, persistent storage of planning knowledge and communication with external systems. To ensure extendibility in our design, we apply dierent design patterns for the components. We sketch and discuss the technical aspects of implementations of the core components. Finally, as proof of the concept, the framework is instantiated to two distinguishing application scenarios
