    Open source innovation: Characteristics and applicability outside the software industry

    Motivation of this paper is to discuss that the open source model of innovation does not only seem practical in the software industry, but also in various other industrial contexts. We develop the concept of Open Source Innovation (OSI) as a generalisation of the open source model of software development (OSS). Our definition centres on the collaboration of volunteers and the free revelation of knowledge between actors. Since OSI exhibits important differences to several related concepts in the literature, we conclude that it is an innovation model in its own right, deserving more attention and research. We further proceed to identify aspects affecting the application of the OSI model in industry practices, grouping them into economic, technical, legal, and social factors. Based on these results as well as expert interviews, we find that the applicability of OSI is primarily determined by the characteristics of, first, the innovation object and, second, the group of contributors, rather than the industrial sector. Finally, we advance propositions on the employment of OSI in industrial practice, relating its feasibility to the innovation object and the group of contributors. --

    Tracking Sensory Characteristics of Virgin Olive Oils During Storage: Interpretation of Their Changes from a Multiparametric Perspective

    Virgin olive oil is inevitably subject to an oxidation process during storage that can affect its stability and quality due to off-flavors that develop before the oil surpasses its ‘best before’ date. Many parameters are involved in the oxidation process at moderate conditions. Therefore, a multiparametric study is necessary to establish a link between physico-chemical changes and sensory quality degradation in a real storage experiment. In this context, a storage experiment of 27 months was performed for four monovarietal virgin olive oils, bottled in transparent 500-mL PET bottles and subjected to conditions close to a supermarket scenario. Volatile composition, quality parameters and phenolic compounds were determined monthly. Simultaneously, an accredited sensory panel assessed their sensory characteristics. The stability of the fresh samples was also studied with the oxidative stability index (OSI) and mesh cell-FTIR. (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol and (E)-2-hexen-1-ol were identified as markers of the fruity attribute. Hexanal and nonanal were also identified as compounds that were associated with the rise of median of defect during storage. Some disagreements were observed between the sensory assessment and the OSI analyzed by Rancimat. However, the increase of concentration of rancid markers agreed with the increase of aldehyde band measured with mesh cell-FTIR.Spanish Research State Agency (research projects AGL2015-69320-R and RTI2018-101546-B-C21

    Predmetom bakalárskej práce je konštrukcia osi C malého sústruhu. Prvá časť obsahuje vymedzenie hlavných pojmov a rešerš v oblasti osi C pre sústruhy a sústružnícke centrá. Ďalšia časť práce sa venuje rozboru rezných síl pri obrábaní s využitím osi C, voľbe vhodného pohonu a brzdového systému. V závere sa pojednáva o tvorbe 3D modelu osi C spolu so sústružníckym vretenom. Súčasťou práce je tiež výkres zostavy.The subject of my bachelor´s thesis is design of C-axis for small turning machine. First part include definition of main terms and research in C-axis used for turning machines and turning centres. Next part is about cutting forces during the machining, choice of drive and breaking system for C-axis. Following part deals with creating 3D model of C-axis with turning spindle. The drawing of assembly is the last part of my thesis.

    Licensing and Business Models

    License affects software companies’ business activities. While proprietary software vendors create custom licenses, open source companies have less flexibility. The Open Source Initiative (OSI) defines a list of 72 licenses as open source (“OSI approved”). For a project to follow open source licensing, it has to pick licenses from this set. Logically, we expect that an open source company defines its business model around the license that it selects. Thus, we can assume that business model decisions follow license choice. In our research we find that in some cases open source companies remove these license constraints for business reasons. We observed cases of open source companies moving from one OSI-approved license to another or companies innovating by adding additional terms. In all these cases, the decision of change is based on the license being a poor fit with their business goals. Not all open source companies are entitled to change the license because this option is available only to companies that own intellectual property. If they do not, they can try to reshape their business model, but that remains a suboptimal option. Whether cognizant of it or not, organizations are implicitly choosing a business model when they select a license. Therefore, it is very important to address licensing and business model decisions as one system instead of a disjointed two-step process. For this purpose we introduce (1) an evolutionary model where license selection and business model impact each other and (2) a taxonomy that addresses both licensing and business models. Our approach helps practitioners include revenue considerations in the licensing choice and researchers to more accurately study the antecedents and consequences of license choice.

    Differential Effects of IGF-1R Small Molecule Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors BMS-754807 and OSI-906 on Human Cancer Cell Lines

    We have determined the effects of the IGF-1R tyrosine kinase inhibitors BMS-754807 (BMS) and OSI-906 (OSI) on cell proliferation and cell-cycle phase distribution in human colon, pancreatic carcinoma, and glioblastoma cell lines and primary cultures. IGF-1R signaling was blocked by BMS and OSI at equivalent doses, although both inhibitors exhibited differential antiproliferative effects. In all pancreatic carcinoma cell lines tested, BMS exerted a strong antiproliferative effect, whereas OSI had a minimal effect. Similar results were obtained on glioblastoma primary cultures, where HGUE-GB-15, -16 and -17 displayed resistance to OSI effects, whereas they were inhibited in their proliferation by BMS. Differential effects of BMS and OSI were also observed in colon carcinoma cell lines. Both inhibitors also showed different effects on cell cycle phase distribution, BMS induced G2/M arrest followed by cell death, while OSI induced G1 arrest with no cell death. Both inhibitors also showed different effects on other protein kinases activities. Taken together, our results are indicative that BMS mainly acts through off-target effects exerted on other protein kinases.     Aesthetic of Cuteness Dimensions in Malang City Mascot

    Osi and Ji are Malang City mascots made with coherent design procedures. They represent a particular identity to appeal to the target audience. This paper examines the aesthetics of cuteness that synergize between the dimensions of affection, language, and design in the city’s mascot. The study is based on qualitative research with observations and interviews conducted between April and September 2018. The affective dimension of Osi and Ji is linked with their anthropomorphism. It creates a high level of intimacy for the audience. The design dimensions of Osi and Ji are determined by the ‘cuteness’ design principles, especially the use of basic shapes such as circles, vibrant colors, proportions, and poses. These three dimensions can function as a guide to design a city mascot character to have a strong visual impact. Keywords: Aesthetic of Cuteness, Character Design, City Masco

    Survey of Inter-satellite Communication for Small Satellite Systems: Physical Layer to Network Layer View

    Small satellite systems enable whole new class of missions for navigation, communications, remote sensing and scientific research for both civilian and military purposes. As individual spacecraft are limited by the size, mass and power constraints, mass-produced small satellites in large constellations or clusters could be useful in many science missions such as gravity mapping, tracking of forest fires, finding water resources, etc. Constellation of satellites provide improved spatial and temporal resolution of the target. Small satellite constellations contribute innovative applications by replacing a single asset with several very capable spacecraft which opens the door to new applications. With increasing levels of autonomy, there will be a need for remote communication networks to enable communication between spacecraft. These space based networks will need to configure and maintain dynamic routes, manage intermediate nodes, and reconfigure themselves to achieve mission objectives. Hence, inter-satellite communication is a key aspect when satellites fly in formation. In this paper, we present the various researches being conducted in the small satellite community for implementing inter-satellite communications based on the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model. This paper also reviews the various design parameters applicable to the first three layers of the OSI model, i.e., physical, data link and network layer. Based on the survey, we also present a comprehensive list of design parameters useful for achieving inter-satellite communications for multiple small satellite missions. Specific topics include proposed solutions for some of the challenges faced by small satellite systems, enabling operations using a network of small satellites, and some examples of small satellite missions involving formation flying aspects.Comment: 51 pages, 21 Figures, 11 Tables, accepted in IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorial

    Pulsatile non-newtonian blood flow in image-based models of carotid bifurcation

    Present hemodynamical study is motivated by the ongoing clinical research at the University Hospital in Pilsen, Czech Republic. On the basis of provided CT scans, several carotid artery models were reconstructed and used for this numerical study of pulsatile blood flow. The blood is modelled as a shear-dependent incompressible fluid, motion of which is described by the non-linear system of Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the Carreau-Yasuda model. The mathematical model is solved using in-house software based on the principle of the SIMPLE algorithm and cell-centred finite volume method (FVM) formulated for hybrid unstructured tetrahedral grids. The discussion of obtained numerical results is performed with special emphasis placed on the analysis of velocity field and distribution of main hemodynamic factors such as cycle-averaged WSS and oscillatory shear index (OSI) in areas prone to atherosclerosis
