    Optimisation of stand-alone hydrogen-based renewable energy systems using intelligent techniques

    Wind and solar irradiance are promising renewable alternatives to fossil fuels due to their availability and topological advantages for local power generation. However, their intermittent and unpredictable nature limits their integration into energy markets. Fortunately, these disadvantages can be partially overcome by using them in combination with energy storage and back-up units. However, the increased complexity of such systems relative to single energy systems makes an optimal sizing method and appropriate Power Management Strategy (PMS) research priorities. This thesis contributes to the design and integration of stand-alone hybrid renewable energy systems by proposing methodologies to optimise the sizing and operation of hydrogen-based systems. These include using intelligent techniques such as Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) and Neural Networks (NNs). Three design aspects: component sizing, renewables forecasting, and operation coordination, have been investigated. The thesis includes a series of four journal articles. The first article introduced a multi-objective sizing methodology to optimise standalone, hydrogen-based systems using GA. The sizing method was developed to calculate the optimum capacities of system components that underpin appropriate compromise between investment, renewables penetration and environmental footprint. The system reliability was assessed using the Loss of Power Supply Probability (LPSP) for which a novel modification was introduced to account for load losses during transient start-up times for the back-ups. The second article investigated the factors that may influence the accuracy of NNs when applied to forecasting short-term renewable energy. That study involved two NNs: Feedforward, and Radial Basis Function in an investigation of the effect of the type, span and resolution of training data, and the length of training pattern, on shortterm wind speed prediction accuracy. The impact of forecasting error on estimating the available wind power was also evaluated for a commercially available wind turbine. The third article experimentally validated the concept of a NN-based (predictive) PMS. A lab-scale (stand-alone) hybrid energy system, which consisted of: an emulated renewable power source, battery bank, and hydrogen fuel cell coupled with metal hydride storage, satisfied the dynamic load demand. The overall power flow of the constructed system was controlled by a NN-based PMS which was implemented using MATLAB and LabVIEW software. The effects of several control parameters, which are either hardware dependent or affect the predictive algorithm, on system performance was investigated under the predictive PMS, this was benchmarked against a rulebased (non-intelligent) strategy. The fourth article investigated the potential impact of NN-based PMS on the economic and operational characteristics of such hybrid systems. That study benchmarked a rule-based PMS to its (predictive) counterpart. In addition, the effect of real-time fuel cell optimisation using PSO, when applied in the context of predictive PMS was also investigated. The comparative analysis was based on deriving the cost of energy, life cycle emissions, renewables penetration, and duty cycles of fuel cell and electrolyser units. The effects of other parameters such the LPSP level, prediction accuracy were also investigated. The developed techniques outperformed traditional approaches by drawing upon complex artificial intelligence models. The research could underpin cost-effective, reliable power supplies to remote communities as well as reducing the dependence on fossil fuels and the associated environmental footprint

    POWER CONDITIONING UNIT FOR SMALL SCALE HYBRID PV-WIND GENERATION SYSTEM

    Small-scale renewable energy systems are becoming increasingly popular due to soaring fuel prices and due to technological advancements which reduce the cost of manufacturing. Solar and wind energies, among other renewable energy sources, are the most available ones globally. The hybrid photovoltaic (PV) and wind power system has a higher capability to deliver continuous power with reduced energy storage requirements and therefore results in better utilization of power conversion and control equipment than either of the individual sources. Power conditioning units (p.c.u.) for such small-scale hybrid PV-wind generation systems have been proposed in this study. The system was connected to the grid, but it could also operate in standalone mode if the grid was unavailable. The system contains a local controller for every energy source and the grid inverter. Besides, it contains the supervisory controller. For the wind generator side, small-scale vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) are attractive due to their ability to capture wind from different directions without using a yaw. One difficulty with VAWTs is to prevent over-speeding and component over-loading at excessive wind velocities. The proposed local controller for the wind generator is based on the current and voltage measured on the dc side of the rectifier connected to the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control is provided in normal operation under the rated speed using a dc/dc boost converter. For high wind velocities, the suggested local controller controls the electric power in order to operate the turbine in the stall region. This high wind velocity control strategy attenuates the stress in the system while it smoothes the power generated. It is shown that the controller is able to stabilize the nonlinear system using an adaptive current feedback loop. Simulation and experimental results are presented. The PV generator side controller is designed to work in systems with multiple energy sources, such as those studied in this thesis. One of the most widely used methods to maximize the output PV power is the hill climbing technique. This study gives guidelines for designing both the perturbation magnitude and the time interval between consecutive perturbations for such a technique. These guidelines would improve the maximum power point tracking efficiency. According to these guidelines, a variable step MPPT algorithm with reduced power mode is designed and applied to the system. The algorithm is validated by simulation and experimental results. A single phase H-bridge inverter is proposed to supply the load and to connect the grid. Generally, a current controller injects active power with a controlled power factor and constant dc link voltage in the grid connected mode. However, in the standalone mode, it injects active power with constant ac output voltage and a power factor which depends on the load. The current controller for both modes is based on a newly developed peak current control (p.c.c.) with selective harmonic elimination. A design procedure has been proposed for the controller. Then, the method was demonstrated by simulation. The problem of the dc current injection to the grid has been investigated for such inverters. The causes of dc current injection are analyzed, and a measurement circuit is then proposed to control the inverter for dc current injection elimination. Characteristics of the proposed method are demonstrated, using simulation and experimental results. At the final stage of the study, a supervisory controller is demonstrated, which manages the different operating states of the system during starting, grid-connected and standalone modes. The operating states, designed for every mode, have been defined in such a hybrid model to allow stability and smooth transition between these states. The supervisory controller switches the system between the different modes and states according to the availability of the utility grid, renewable energy generators, the state of charge (SOC) of energy storage batteries, and the load.     Synchronverter-based control for wind power

    More and more attention has been paid to the energy crisis due to the increasing energy demand from industrial and commercial applications. The utilisation of wind power, which is considered as one of the most promising renewable energy sources, has grown rapidly in the last three decades. In recent years, many power converter techniques have been developed to integrate wind power with the electrical grid. The use of power electronic converters allows for variable speed operation of wind turbines, and enhanced power extraction. This work, which is supported by EPSRC and Nheolis under the DHPA scheme, focuses on the design and analysis of control systems for wind power. In this work, two of the most popular AC-DC-AC topologies with permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG) have been developed. One consists of an uncontrollable rectifier, a boost converter and an inverter and a current control scheme is proposed to achieve the maximum power point tracking (MPPT). In the control strategy, the output current of the uncontrollable rectifier is controlled by a boost converter according to the current reference, which is determined by a climbing algorithm, to achieve MPPT. The synchronverter technology has been applied to control the inverter for the grid-connection. An experimental setup based on DSP has been designed to implement all the above mentioned experiments. In addition, a synchronverter-based parallel control strategy, which consists of a frequency droop loop and a voltage droop loop to achieve accurate sharing of real power and reactive power respectively, has been further studied. Moreover, a control strategy based on the synchronverter has been presented to force the inverter to have capacitive output impedance, so that the quality of the output voltage is improved. Abstract The other topology consists of a full-scale back-to-back converter, of which the rectifier is controllable. Two control strategies have been proposed to operate a three-phase rectifier to mimic a synchronous motor, following the idea of synchronverters to operate inverters to mimic synchronous generators. In the proposed schemes, the real power extracted from the source and the output voltage are the control variables, respectively, hence they can be employed in different applications. Furthermore, improved control strategies are proposed to self-synchronise with the grid. This does not only improve the performance of the system but also considerably reduces the complexity of the overall controller. All experiments have been implemented on a test rig based on dSPACE to demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed control strategies with unity power factor, sinusoidal currents and good dynamics. Finally, an original control strategy based on the synchronverter technology has been proposed for back-to-back converters in wind power applications to make the whole system behave as a generator-motor-generator system

    Advanced control architectures for grid connected and standalone converter systems

    This dissertation proposes new control algorithms dedicated towards improving the reliability, computational burden and stability in grid-connected and stand-alone based power electronic converter systems applicable for ac microgrids. Two voltage sensorless control architectures, one for stand-alone applications and the other for grid-connected application are established in this thesis. The output voltage of a standalone single-phase inverter is controlled directly by controlling the output filter capacitor current without using a dedicated output voltage sensor. A method to estimate the output filter capacitance is also presented. For the grid connected converter, a novel closed loop estimation is presented to estimate the grid voltage. In addition to the estimation of the grid voltage, the proposed method also generates the unit vectors and frequency information similar to a conventional phase-locked loop structure. The voltage sensorless algorithm is then extended to LCL filter based grid connected converters thereby proposing a new indirect method of controlling the grid current. Furthermore, addressing the stability issues in current-controlled grid tied converters, this dissertation also analyzes the power angle synchronization control of grid-tied bidirectional converters for low voltage grids. The power flow equations for the low voltage grid are analyzed and compensators are designed to ensure the decoupled control of active and reactive power. It is demonstrated that the proposed compensators are immune to grid fluctuations and ensure stable operation controlling the desired power flow to and from the grid.     The Modeling and Advanced Controller Design of Wind, PV and Battery Inverters

    Renewable energies such as wind power and solar energy have become alternatives to fossil energy due to the improved energy security and sustainability. This trend leads to the rapid growth of wind and Photovoltaic (PV) farm installations worldwide. Power electronic equipments are commonly employed to interface the renewable energy generation with the grid. The intermittent nature of renewable and the large scale utilization of power electronic devices bring forth numerous challenges to system operation and design. Methods for studying and improving the operation of the interconnection of renewable energy such as wind and PV are proposed in this Ph.D. dissertation.;A multi-objective controller including is proposed for PV inverter to perform voltage flicker suppression, harmonic reduction and unbalance compensation. A novel supervisory control scheme is designed to coordinate PV and battery inverters to provide high quality power to the grid. This proposed control scheme provides a comprehensive solution to both active and reactive power issues caused by the intermittency of PV energy. A novel real-time experimental method for connecting physical PV panel and battery storage is proposed, and the proposed coordinated controller is tested in a Hardware in the Loop (HIL) experimental platform based on Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS).;This work also explores the operation and controller design of a microgrid consisting of a direct drive wind generator and a battery storage system. A Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy for the AC-DC-AC converter of wind system is derived and implemented to capture the maximum wind energy as well as provide desired reactive power. The MPC increases the accuracy of maximum wind energy capture as well as minimizes the power oscillations caused by varying wind speed. An advanced supervisory controller is presented and employed to ensure the power balance while regulating the PCC bus voltage within acceptable range in both grid-connected and islanded operation.;The high variability and uncertainty of renewable energies introduces unexpected fast power variation and hence the operation conditions continuously change in distribution networks. A three-layers advanced optimization and intelligent control algorithm for a microgrid with multiple renewable resources is proposed. A Dual Heuristic Programming (DHP) based system control layer is used to ensure the dynamic reliability and voltage stability of the entire microgrid as the system operation condition changes. A local layer maximizes the capability of the Photovoltaic (PV), wind power generators and battery systems, and a Model Predictive Control (MPC) based device layer increases the tracking accuracy of the converter control. The detail design of the proposed SWAPSC scheme are presented and tested on an IEEE 13 node feeder with a PV farm, a wind farm and two battery-based energy storage systems

    This paper presents the operation of grid tied, two level voltage source inverter (VSI) during network voltage unbalance. The control system was implemented in synchronous rotating reference frame dq0 (SRF). Two types of control structures were investigated herein. First utilizes the Double Decoupled SRF Phase-locked loop (DDSRF-PLL) synchronisation with positive and negative sequence currents control. Second one is simplified system that does not provide symmetrical components decomposition and decoupling for synchronisation. Simulation results exhibited a superior performance of the DDSRF-PLL control system under grid voltage unbalance.Niniejszy artykuƂ przedstawia pracę dwupoziomowego falownika napięcia wspóƂpracującego z siecią, podczas przejƛciowej asymetrii napięć.
