Fourth generation (4G) communications will support many capabilities while providing universal, high speed access. One potential enabler for these capabilities is software defined radio (SDR). When controlled by cognitive radio (CR) principles, the required waveform diversity is achieved via a synergistic union called CR-based SDR. Research is rapidly progressing in SDR hardware and software venues, but current CR-based SDR research lacks the theoretical foundation and analytic framework to permit efficient implementation. This limitation is addressed here by introducing a general framework for analyzing, characterizing, and implementing spectrally modulated, spectrally encoded (SMSE) signals within CR-based SDR architectures. Given orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a 4G candidate signal, OFDM-based signals are collectively classified as SMSE since modulation and encoding are spectrally applied. The proposed framework provides analytic commonality and unification of SMSE signals. Applicability is first shown for candidate 4G signals, and resultant analytic expressions agree with published results. Implementability is then demonstrated in multiple coexistence scenarios via modeling and simulation to reinforce practical utility

Adicionalmente, a técnica signal space diversity (SSD) é usada no sistema celular MC-CDMA. Simulações de Monte Carlo corroboram a precisão da análise matemática apresentadaAbstract: A hybrid technique combining code division multiple access (CDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been proposed as an option for future mobile communication standards. This technique is known as multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA), which, besides inheriting the advantages of CDMA and OFDM techniques, also possesses an inherent frequency diversity. Despite being a multiple access technique, MC-CDMA has been typically studied employing single-user detectors in the receiver. Moreover, some works that have studied their performance with multiuser detectors have done so far using only simulations. Furthermore, single cell scenarios are typically considered although mobile systems operate in cellular environments. This dissertation aims to partially complement previous research on MC-CDMA. In general, this work addresses the uplink performance of MC-CDMA systems in terms of the bit error rate (BER) and the cellular spectral efficiency. For this, a cellular system employing fractional frequency reuse (FFR) and soft frequency reuse (SFR) schemes is assumed. Frequency domain interleaving is performed in the transmitter into the user equipments and, multiuser detection and an antenna array are considered in the receivers at the base stations. The transmitter into the user equipments also performs perfect power control. Furthermore, additive white Gaussian noise, path-loss and slow frequency-selective Rayleigh fading are considered in the channel model. The contributions of this dissertation are summarized in the following. Closed-form expressions are derived to evaluate the mean BER of MC-CDMA cellular systems using the multiuser detectors: zero-forcing (ZF), minimum mean square error (MMSE) and maximum likelihood detector (MU-MLD). In addition, signal space diversity (SSD) is used in the MC-CDMA cellular system. For this, MU-MLD must be employed in the receiver at the base station. An accurate expression to evaluate the mean BER in this scenario is also derived. Moreover, an asymptotic analysis of the BER expressions is performed to obtain further insights of the diversity order and system behavior at the high signal-to-noise-plus-interference ratio regime. The computational complexity of the multiuser detectors is also obtained in terms of the number of complex operations performed during the detection process. In particular, MU-MLD is implemented via a sphere decoder (SD) algorithm in order to reduce its complexity. Some techniques are provided in order to further reduce the SD complexity. Finally, an expression to evaluate the mean cellular spectral efficiency of the MC-CDMA system in FFR and SFR scenarios is obtained. This analysis is based on an algorithm that calculates the cell coverage radius for each modulation used in the system, assuming that adaptive modulation is employed. For all analyzed scenarios, BPSK and M-QAM modulations are considered. Monte Carlo simulations corroborate the accuracy of the presented mathematical analysisDoutoradoTelecomunicações e TelemáticaDoutor em Engenharia ElétricaCAPE

This work is devoted to the broadband wireless transmission techniques, which are serious candidates to be implemented in future broadband wireless and cellular systems, aiming at providing high and reliable data transmission and concomitantly high mobility. In order to cope with doubly-selective channels, receiver structures based on OFDM and SC-FDE block transmission techniques, are proposed, which allow cost-effective implementations, using FFT-based signal processing. The first subject to be addressed is the impact of the number of multipath components, and the diversity order, on the asymptotic performance of OFDM and SC-FDE, in uncoded and for different channel coding schemes. The obtained results show that the number of relevant separable multipath components is a key element that influences the performance of OFDM and SC-FDE schemes. Then, the improved estimation and detection performance of OFDM-based broadcasting systems, is introduced employing SFN (Single Frequency Network) operation. An initial coarse channel is obtained with resort to low-power training sequences estimation, and an iterative receiver with joint detection and channel estimation is presented. The achieved results have shown very good performance, close to that with perfect channel estimation. The next topic is related to SFN systems, devoting special attention to time-distortion effects inherent to these networks. Typically, the SFN broadcast wireless systems employ OFDM schemes to cope with severely time-dispersive channels. However, frequency errors, due to CFO, compromises the orthogonality between subcarriers. As an alternative approach, the possibility of using SC-FDE schemes (characterized by reduced envelope fluctuations and higher robustness to carrier frequency errors) is evaluated, and a technique, employing joint CFO estimation and compensation over the severe time-distortion effects, is proposed. Finally, broadband mobile wireless systems, in which the relative motion between the transmitter and receiver induces Doppler shift which is different or each propagation path, is considered, depending on the angle of incidence of that path in relation to the direction of travel. This represents a severe impairment in wireless digital communications systems, since that multipath propagation combined with the Doppler effects, lead to drastic and unpredictable fluctuations of the envelope of the received signal, severely affecting the detection performance. The channel variations due this effect are very difficult to estimate and compensate. In this work we propose a set of SC-FDE iterative receivers implementing efficient estimation and tracking techniques. The performance results show that the proposed receivers have very good performance, even in the presence of significant Doppler spread between the different groups of multipath components

In order to combat interference and exploit large multiplexing gains of the multi-antenna systems, a particular interest in spatial division multiple access (SDMA) techniques has emerged. Linear precoding techniques, as one of the SDMA strategies, have obtained more attention due to the fact that an increasing number of users and antennas involved into the existing and future mobile communication systems requires a simplification of the precoding design. Therefore, this thesis contributes to the design of linear transmit and receive strategies for multi-user MIMO broadcast channels in a single cell and clustered multiple cells. First, we present a throughput approximation framework for multi-user MIMO broadcast channels employing regularized block diagonalization (RBD) linear precoding. Comparing dirty paper coding (DPC) and linear precoding algorithms (e.g., zero forcing (ZF) and block diagonalization (BD)), we further quantify lower and upper bounds of the rate and power offset between them as a function of the system parameters such as the number of users and antennas. Next, we develop a novel closed-form coordinated beamforming (CBF) algorithm (i.e., SeDJoCo based closed-form CBF) to solve the existing open problem of CBF. Our new algorithm can support a MIMO system with an arbitrary number of users and transmit antennas. Moreover, the application of our new algorithm is not only for CBF, but also for blind source separation (BSS), since the same mathematical model has been used in BSS application. Then, we further propose a new iterative CBF algorithm (i.e., flexible coordinated beamforming (FlexCoBF)) for multi-user MIMO broadcast channels. Compared to the existing iterative CBF algorithms, the most promising advantage of our new algorithm is that it provides freedom in the choice of the linear transmit and receive beamforming strategies, i.e., any existing linear precoding method can be chosen as the transmit strategy and the receive beamforming strategy can be flexibly chosen from MRC or MMSE receivers. Considering clustered multiple cell scenarios, we extend the FlexCoBF algorithm further and introduce the concept of the coordinated multipoint (CoMP) transmission. Finally, we present three strategies for channel state information (CSI) acquisition regarding various channel conditions and channel estimation strategies. The CSI knowledge is required at the base station in order to implement SDMA techniques. The quality of the obtained CSI heavily affects the system performance. The performance enhancement achieved by our new strategies has been demonstrated by numerical simulation results in terms of the system sum rate and the bit error rate
