    Nonverbal communication in EFL teaching

    XXI Jornades de Foment de la Investigació de la Facultat de Ciències Humanes i Socials (Any 2016)In recent years a number of researchers have stressed the importance of nonverbal communication – especially Kinesics – in the teaching and learning of languages (Bernsen, 2002; Jung, 2003; González, 2004; Querol-Julián and Belles-Fortuño, 2010; Surkamp, 2014). This paper aims to investigate the importance of gestures in the communication process and how the appropriate use of nonverbal communication enhances classroom interaction and contributes to conveying meaning. EFL language teaching can benefited from nonverbal communication when this is used in an effective way. The paper examines a small corpus of two videos taken from YouTube in which EFL teachers’ discourse and co-speech gestures (McNeill, 1992) were analysed. Results suggest that teachers used primarily iconic hand movements, which in turn enhanced students’ acquisition of the target language (TL). Finally, a section of pedagogical implications will focus on the appropriate use of gestures in a number of interactive activities

    Teachers’ nonverbal communication has a vital role within the classroom environment. This literary review examined (1) a historical perspective of teachers’ nonverbal communication, (2) the relationship between students’ perceptions of their learning and teachers’ nonverbal communication, (3) the relationship between standardized measurements of student learning and teachers’ nonverbal communication, and (4) the relationship between students’ perceptions of teacher credibility based on the teachers’ nonverbal communication. Findings in the literary study suggest that teachers’ nonverbal communication is beneficial to students’ academic success. This review has outlined elements of nonverbal communication a teacher could use to benefit student learning. Using the findings of this literature review, school administrators, higher education faculty, K-12 teachers, and professional development officials will find data that could assist their academic teaching

    Nonverbal communication has the function, and absolutely it depend from the context and in nonverbal communication the researcher focuses the function, and this research has two research question, they are (1) kinds of nonverbal communication (2) the function of nonverbal communication contained in Nine Live movie. This research used Mark L Knapp theory which categorized kinds of nonverbal communication and the function nonverbal communication in Nine Live movie. In this research, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative method. This method is to explain the data and the data get from Sonnen field movie the entitled is Nine Live movie. The movie has the duration, the duration is 01:26:50 and the researcher found the data were collected by watching the movie and read the script, and finding out how many kind nonverbal communication there. The researcher found 18 data that is use nonverbal communication, they are consist of kinesic. Kinesic category consist of 18 data : 3 data is head movement category, 7 data is facial expression category, 6 data is hand movement category, 2 data eyebrow movement category. The last, the researcher suggests to the readers who want to analyze that nonverbal communication is something interesting to learn

    Assessing the Presence and Use of Nonverbal Communication in Primary Reading Instruction

    This research examined the presence and types of nonverbal communication presented in primary reading instruction. Primary instructors were surveyed about their use and types of nonverbal communication employed during reading instruction. Nonverbal communication variables studied were determined from relevant literature regarding nonverbal immediacy, primary education, and reading instruction. Findings revealed that almost all nonverbal communication variables studied were employed frequently and most respondents had no prior training. Findings suggest how future studies can better evaluate the role of nonverbal communication in reading instruction and provide education for primary teachers in hopes of improving literacy education

    Gender, Parasocial Interaction, and Nonverbal Communication: Testing the Visual Effect of Sports Magazine Cover Models

    An experiment examined gender, parasocial interaction, and nonverbal communication regarding sports magazine cover models. Results indicate that a correlation exists among parasocial interaction, nonverbal communication, and gender, with female cover models eliciting larger effects on test subjects. However, gender did not correlate with parasocial interaction or nonverbal communication among the test subjects, contradicting extant literature. Also, the parasocial interaction and nonverbal communication measurement scales positively correlated. In conclusion, static images are reliable experimental stimuli for parasocial interaction studies and nonverbal measurement scales, and sports magazines are better served by featuring more women

    Nonverbal communication, an essential component of all languages, has been, for a number of historical reasons, almost completely neglected in the teaching of both native and foreign languages. Speech has often been added to reading and writing as proper goals of language teaching, but the need for knowing nonverbal communication if one is speaking face-to-face with another is only slowly being realized. What is needed are two-language, detailed, descriptive contrasts of the nonverbal communication of the native and the target dialects or languages. No such contrast is currently more needed than one contrasting the nonverbal-communication systems of Standard Spanish and Standard American English

    Awareness and extent of knowledge of taxonomies of nonverbal communication channels among healthcare providers in South Eastern Nigeria

    Communication is vital between health care providers and their clients. Though not often studied, nonverbal communication has been found to be a vital element within the total communication process. Its place in healthcare provision cannot be overemphasized. With various taxonomies or channels of nonverbal communication, the purpose of this study was to ascertain healthcare providers’ ability to identify the taxonomies of nonverbal communication. Participants for the study were healthcare providers at the antenatal clinic of three Tertiary Health Institutions in South Eastern Nigeria. The instrument for data collection was questionnaire. Statistical analysis of data was performed using Chi-square. Significant level was placed at p<0.05. Findings showed that all the healthcare providers were aware of nonverbal communication. Predominant numbers of health care providers use nonverbal communication to interact with their clients (X2=8.167, p<0.05) and significant numbers of the healthcare providers did not show gender bias in attending to their clients (X2=5.638, p<0.05). However, insignificant numbers of healthcare providers did not apply their knowledge of proxemics and chrone Verbalmics (X2=1.333; p=0.248 & X2=1.286; p=0.257) respectively nor did they understand the taxonomies of kinesics, chronemics, haptics and proxemics. The finding in this study, showed poor understanding of taxonomies of nonverbal communication channels amongst the healthcare providers despite widespread awareness of nonverbal communication. This study thereby concludes that nonverbal communication may be poorly taught in medical school possibly due to non-existence of a curriculum tailored to suit the training
