The entire collection of 1918 stories, especially the last one, entitled My, polskie dzieci! [We, the Polish children!], describing the school strike in Kalisz of 1905, opens Maria Dąbrowska’s many years of reflection on what the future Polish independence should be like. Therefore, 1905 is an important moment in her work, and the description of the school strike in Kalisz exists in her output in three versions. When political independence became reality, the writer took the tedious work of writing her great novel, Noce i dnie [Nights and Days] to describe not only the background of the 1918 independence, as she did in her collection published the same year, but also in order to better explore the concept of social independence. The novel is intended to transform the reader from a passive recipient of the political independence into a conscious and active participant of their personal and social independence. Powieść ma przeobrazić czytelnika z biernego odbiorcy politycznej niepodległości w świadomego i aktywnego uczestnika biorącego udział w osobistej i społecznej niepodległości

The article depicts relations between two distinguished Polish literary critics from the interwar period – Kazimierz Wyka and Ludwik Fryde. They both represented the same literary generation (the 1910 generation) and the same programmepostulating critical model. Despite shared interests, among them responses to the same literary events (especially Maria Dąbrowska’s Noce i dnie) and shared issues of literary generations, their relationship was usually described as a dispute. Wyka and Fryde adopted a different stance on the critical and social impact of Stanisław Brzozowski and the significance of work of Wyka’s master Stefan Kołaczkowski. Their world view also differed. Although both critics were among the first proponents and promoters of personalism in Poland, Wyka was closer to Emmanuel Mounier’s way of thinking, whereas Fryde was closer to Jacques Maritain’s

The aim of the present article is to demonstrate a critical-literary reflection which was contained in interwar journals of Maria Dąbrowska. The writer was a very strict judge of the twentieth – century literature. She felt the need of quick reaction to weak works of literature, and also directed many accusations at literary critics. Her activity in the interwar period can be divided into two terms: before and after the publication of Noce i Dnie. Undoubtedly, it was the success of the novel that contributed to the fact that Dąbrowska was writing about literature in a very daring way, frequently making critical remarks addressed at her fellow writers
