An aesthetics of touch: investigating the language of design relating to form
How well can designers communicate qualities of touch?
This paper presents evidence that they have some capability to do so, much of which appears to have been learned, but at present make limited use of such language. Interviews with graduate designer-makers suggest that they are aware of and value the importance of touch and materiality in their work, but lack a vocabulary to fully relate to their detailed explanations of other aspects such as their intent or selection of materials. We believe that more attention should be paid to the verbal dialogue that happens in the design process, particularly as other researchers show that even making-based learning also has a strong verbal element to it. However, verbal language alone does not appear to be adequate for a comprehensive language of touch. Graduate designers-makers’ descriptive practices combined non-verbal manipulation within verbal accounts. We thus argue that haptic vocabularies do not simply describe material qualities, but rather are situated competences that physically demonstrate the presence of haptic qualities. Such competencies are more important than groups of verbal vocabularies in isolation. Design support for developing and extending haptic competences must take this wide range of considerations into account to comprehensively improve designers’ capabilities
On the Place of Text Data in Lifelogs, and Text Analysis via Semantic Facets
Current research in lifelog data has not paid enough attention to analysis of
cognitive activities in comparison to physical activities. We argue that as we
look into the future, wearable devices are going to be cheaper and more
prevalent and textual data will play a more significant role. Data captured by
lifelogging devices will increasingly include speech and text, potentially
useful in analysis of intellectual activities. Analyzing what a person hears,
reads, and sees, we should be able to measure the extent of cognitive activity
devoted to a certain topic or subject by a learner. Test-based lifelog records
can benefit from semantic analysis tools developed for natural language
processing. We show how semantic analysis of such text data can be achieved
through the use of taxonomic subject facets and how these facets might be
useful in quantifying cognitive activity devoted to various topics in a
person's day. We are currently developing a method to automatically create
taxonomic topic vocabularies that can be applied to this detection of
intellectual activity

This is a technical report including the papers presented at the Workshop on Ambient Intelligence Infrastructures (WAmIi) that took place in conjunction with the International Joint Conference on Ambient Intelligence (AmI) in Pisa, Italy on November 13, 2012. The motivation for organizing the workshop was the wish to learn from past experience on Ambient Intelligence systems, and in particular, on the lessons learned on the system architecture of such systems. A significant number of European projects and other research have been performed, often with the goal of developing AmI technology to showcase AmI scenarios. We believe that for AmI to become further successfully accepted the system architecture is essential
