An improved discrete bat algorithm for symmetric and asymmetric traveling salesman problems
Bat algorithm is a population metaheuristic proposed in 2010 which is based on the echolocation or bio-sonar characteristics of microbats. Since its first implementation, the bat algorithm has been used in a wide range of fields. In this paper, we present a discrete version of the bat algorithm to solve the well-known symmetric and asymmetric traveling salesman problems. In addition, we propose an improvement in the basic structure of the classic bat algorithm. To prove that our proposal is a promising approximation method, we have compared its performance in 37 instances with the results obtained by five different techniques: evolutionary simulated annealing, genetic algorithm, an island based distributed genetic algorithm, a discrete firefly algorithm and an imperialist competitive algorithm. In order to obtain fair and rigorous comparisons, we have conducted three different statistical tests along the paper: the Student's -test, the Holm's test, and the Friedman test. We have also compared the convergence behaviour shown by our proposal with the ones shown by the evolutionary simulated annealing, and the discrete firefly algorithm. The experimentation carried out in this study has shown that the presented improved bat algorithm outperforms significantly all the other alternatives in most of the cases

An Efficient Solution to Travelling Salesman Problem using Genetic Algorithm with Modified Crossover Operator
The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is a famous NP-hard problem in the area of combinatorial optimization. It is utilized to locate the shortest possible route that visits every city precisely once and comes back to the beginning point from a given set of cities and distance. This paper proposes an efficient and effective solution for solving such a query. A modified crossover method using Minimal Weight Variable, Order Selection Crossover operator, a modified mutation using local optimization and a modified selection method using KMST is proposed. The crossover operator (MWVOSX) chooses a particular order from multiple orders which have the minimum cost and takes the remaining from the other parent in backward and forward order. Then it creates two new offspring. Further, it selects the least weight new offspring from those two offspring. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is compared to the classical genetic algorithm. Comparisons show that our proposed algorithm provides much efficient results than the existing classical genetic algorithm
Solving the Multiple Traveling Salesman Problem by a Novel Meta-heuristic Algorithm
The multiple traveling salesman problem (MTSP) is a generalization of the famous traveling salesman problem (TSP), where more than one salesman is used in the solution. Although the MTSP is a typical kind of computationally complex combinatorial optimization problem, it can be extended to a wide variety of routing problems. This paper presents an efficient and evolutionary optimization algorithm which has been developed through combining Modified Imperialist Competitive Algorithm and Lin-Kernigan Algorithm (MICA) in order to solve the MTSP. In the proposed algorithm, an absorption function and several local search algorithms as a revolution operator are used. The performance of our algorithm was tested on several MTSP benchmark problems and the results confirmed that the MICA performs well and is quite competitive with other meta-heuristic algorithms

OptPlatform: metaheuristic optimisation framework for solving complex real-world problems
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonWe optimise daily, whether that is planning a round trip that visits the most attractions within a given holiday budget or just taking a train instead of driving a car in a rush hour. Many problems, just like these, are solved by individuals as part of our daily schedule, and they are effortless and straightforward. If we now scale that to many individuals with many different schedules, like a school timetable, we get to a point where it is just not feasible or practical to solve by hand. In such instances, optimisation methods are used to obtain an optimal solution. In this thesis, a practical approach to optimisation has been taken by developing an optimisation platform with all the necessary tools to be used by practitioners who are not necessarily familiar with the subject of optimisation. First, a high-performance metaheuristic optimisation framework (MOF) called OptPlatform is implemented, and the versatility and performance are evaluated across multiple benchmarks and real-world optimisation problems. Results show that, compared to competing MOFs, the OptPlatform outperforms in both the solution quality and computation time. Second, the most suitable hardware platform for OptPlatform is determined by an in-depth analysis of Ant Colony Optimisation scaling across CPU, GPU and enterprise Xeon Phi. Contrary to the common benchmark problems used in the literature, the supply chain problem solved could not scale on GPUs. Third, a variety of metaheuristics are implemented into OptPlatform. Including, a new metaheuristic based on Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA), called ICA with Independence and Constrained Assimilation (ICAwICA) is proposed. The ICAwICA was compared against two different types of benchmark problems, and results show the versatile application of the algorithm, matching and in some cases outperforming the custom-tuned approaches. Finally, essential MOF features like automatic algorithm selection and tuning, lacking on existing frameworks, are implemented in OptPlatform. Two novel approaches are proposed and compared to existing methods. Results indicate the superiority of the implemented tuning algorithms within constrained tuning budget environment
Clustering stock exchange data by using evolutionary algorithms for portfolio management
In present paper, imperialist competitive algorithm and ant colony algorithm and particle swarm optimization algorithm have been used to cluster stocks of Tehran stock exchange. Also results of the three algorithms have been compared with three famous clustering models so called k-means, Fcm and Som. After clustering, a portfolio has been made by choosing some stocks from each cluster and using NSGA-II algorithm. Results show superiority of ant colony algorithms and particle swarm optimization algorithm and imperialist competitive to other three methods for clustering stocks. Due to diversification of the portfolio, portfolio risk will be reduced while using data chosen from the clusters. The more efficient the clustering, the lower the risk is. Also, using clustering for portfolio management reduces time of portfolio selection.peer-reviewe

Solving the Traveling Salesman Problem Based on The Genetic Reactive Bone Route Algorithm whit Ant Colony System
[EN] The TSP is considered one of the most well-known combinatorial optimization tasks and researchers have paid so much attention to the TSP for many years. In this problem, a salesman starts to move from an arbitrary place called depot and after visits all of the nodes, finally comes back to the depot. The objective is to minimize the total distance traveled by the salesman. Because this problem is a non-deterministic polynomial (NP-hard) problem in nature, a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm called REACSGA is used for solving the TSP. In REACSGA, a reactive bone route algorithm that uses the ant colony system (ACS) for generating initial diversified solutions and the genetic algorithm (GA) as an improved procedure are applied. Since the performance of the Metaheuristic algorithms is significantly influenced by their parameters, Taguchi Method is used to set the parameters of the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm is tested on several standard instances involving 24 to 318 nodes from the literature. The computational result shows that the results of the proposed algorithm are competitive with other metaheuristic algorithms for solving the TSP in terms of better quality of solution and computational time respectively. In addition, the proposed REACSGA is significantly efficient and finds closely the best known solutions for most of the instances in which thirteen best known solutions are also found.Yousefikhoshbakht, M.; Malekzadeh, N.; Sedighpour, M.
