The Practical Turn in Philosophy of Mathematics: A Portrait of a Young Discipline
In the present article, the current situation of the so-called philosophy of mathematical practice is discussed. First, its emergence is evaluated in relation to the âpracticalâ turn in philosophy of science and in philosophy of mathematics. Second, the variety of approaches concerned with the practice of mathematics and the new topics being now object of research are introduced. Third, the possible replies to the question about what counts as mathematical practice are taken into account. Finally, some of the problems that are still open in the philosophy of mathematical practice are presented and some possible new directions of research considered
Signs And Voices: Deaf Culture, Identity, Language, And Arts
This collection, carefully chosen from the recent Signs and Voices Conference, the Presidential Forum on American Sign Language at the Modern Language Association Convention, and other sources, addresses all of the factors now changing the cultural landscape for deaf people. Taken together, the essays in this book and the accompanying DVD point to new directions in a broad range of fields, including cognitive science, deaf studies, disability studies, education, linguistics, literary criticism, philosophy, and psychology. This showcase of innovative and rigorous cross-disciplinary study will prove invaluable to everyone interested in the current state of the Deaf community
Making Substantial Connections: A Critical Appreciation of Sheila Delany
Centring on three of Delany's most influential publications, this article provides an overview of the way her work has both engendered debate and stimulated new research directions. "Undoing Substantial Connection" (1972) argues that the late Middle Ages witnessed the decline of "analogical thought" in literature, science, politics, and philosophy; "Mothers to Think Back Through" (1987) engages the life and work of Christine de Pizan, challenging the prevalent celebratory readings of this late medieval writer in order to pose tough questions regarding the role of the author in society; and "Geographies of Desire" (1992) explores the interrelation of gender and Orientalism in the poetry of Chaucer

Thinking in, with, across, and beyond cases with John Forrester
We consider the influence that John Forresterâs work has had on thinking in, with, and from cases in multiple disciplines. Forresterâs essay âIf p, Then What? Thinking in Casesâ was published in History of the Human Sciences in 1996 and transformed understandings of what a case was, and how case-based thinking worked in numerous human sciences (including, centrally, psychoanalysis). Forresterâs collection of essays Thinking in Cases was published posthumously, after his untimely death in 2015, and is the inspiration for the special issue we introduce. This comprises new research from authors working in and across the history of science and medicine, gender and sexuality studies, philosophy of science, semiotics, film studies, literary studies and comparative literature, psychoanalytic studies, medical humanities, and sociology. This research addresses what it means to reason in cases in particular temporal, spatial, or genre-focused contexts; introduces new figures (e.g. EugĂšne Azam, C. S. Peirce, Michael Balint) into lineages of case-based reasoning; emphasizes the unfinished and unfinishable character of some case reading and autobiographical accounts; and shows the frequency with which certain kinds of reasoning attempted with cases fail (often in instructive ways). The special issue opens up new directions for thinking and working with cases and case-based reasoning in the humanities and human sciences
Towards Responsible Plant Data Linkage: Data Challenges for Agricultural Research and Development
This open access book provides the first systematic overview of existing challenges and opportunities for responsible data linkage, and a cutting-edge assessment of which steps need to be taken to ensure that plant data are ethically shared and used for the benefit of ensuring global food security â one of the UNâs Sustainable Development Goals. The volume focuses on the contemporary contours of such challenges through sustained engagement with current and historical initiatives and discussion of best practices and prospective future directions for ensuring responsible plant data linkage. The volume is divided into four sections that include case studies of plant data use and linkage in the context of particular research projects, breeding programs, and historical research. It address technical challenges of data linkage in developing key tools, standards and infrastructures, and examines governance challenges of data linkage in relation to socioeconomic and environmental research and data collection. Finally, the last section addresses issues raised by new data production and linkage methods for the inclusion of agricultureâs diverse stakeholders. This book brings together leading experts in data curation, data governance and data studies from a variety of fields, including data science, plant science, agricultural research, science policy, data ethics and the philosophy, history and social studies of plant science
I manuali di filosofia nella prima etĂ moderna: uno sguardo introduttivo
During the early modern age, the teaching of philosophy pivots on the systematic manual which replaces the traditional âcommentariumâ also in the schools run by the religious orders of the Catholic Church. When confronted with the rise and diffusion of the new philosophy and of the new science, the authors of philosophical manuals basically follow three different directions: beside the defenders of the Aristotelian-Scholastic tradition and the enthusiastic innovators, there emerges a third conspicuous orientation, which tries to take a middle course and draws inspiration from the âphilosophia eclecticaâ understood as a path independent of the various philosophical schools. At the same time, the historic-philosophical perspective starts to be introduced into the systematic manual of philosophy, to the extent that it becomes an autonomous treatment with respect to the manual itself
