Image Understanding by Socializing the Semantic Gap
Several technological developments like the Internet, mobile devices and Social Networks have spurred the sharing of images in unprecedented volumes, making tagging and commenting a common habit. Despite the recent progress in image analysis, the problem of Semantic Gap still hinders machines in fully understand the rich semantic of a shared photo. In this book, we tackle this problem by exploiting social network contributions. A comprehensive treatise of three linked problems on image annotation is presented, with a novel experimental protocol used to test eleven state-of-the-art methods. Three novel approaches to annotate, under stand the sentiment and predict the popularity of an image are presented. We conclude with the many challenges and opportunities ahead for the multimedia community
Socializing the Semantic Gap: A Comparative Survey on Image Tag Assignment, Refinement and Retrieval
Where previous reviews on content-based image retrieval emphasize on what can
be seen in an image to bridge the semantic gap, this survey considers what
people tag about an image. A comprehensive treatise of three closely linked
problems, i.e., image tag assignment, refinement, and tag-based image retrieval
is presented. While existing works vary in terms of their targeted tasks and
methodology, they rely on the key functionality of tag relevance, i.e.
estimating the relevance of a specific tag with respect to the visual content
of a given image and its social context. By analyzing what information a
specific method exploits to construct its tag relevance function and how such
information is exploited, this paper introduces a taxonomy to structure the
growing literature, understand the ingredients of the main works, clarify their
connections and difference, and recognize their merits and limitations. For a
head-to-head comparison between the state-of-the-art, a new experimental
protocol is presented, with training sets containing 10k, 100k and 1m images
and an evaluation on three test sets, contributed by various research groups.
Eleven representative works are implemented and evaluated. Putting all this
together, the survey aims to provide an overview of the past and foster

Robust Image Analysis by L1-Norm Semi-supervised Learning
This paper presents a novel L1-norm semi-supervised learning algorithm for
robust image analysis by giving new L1-norm formulation of Laplacian
regularization which is the key step of graph-based semi-supervised learning.
Since our L1-norm Laplacian regularization is defined directly over the
eigenvectors of the normalized Laplacian matrix, we successfully formulate
semi-supervised learning as an L1-norm linear reconstruction problem which can
be effectively solved with sparse coding. By working with only a small subset
of eigenvectors, we further develop a fast sparse coding algorithm for our
L1-norm semi-supervised learning. Due to the sparsity induced by sparse coding,
the proposed algorithm can deal with the noise in the data to some extent and
thus has important applications to robust image analysis, such as noise-robust
image classification and noise reduction for visual and textual bag-of-words
(BOW) models. In particular, this paper is the first attempt to obtain robust
image representation by sparse co-refinement of visual and textual BOW models.
The experimental results have shown the promising performance of the proposed

Semantic multimedia modelling & interpretation for annotation
The emergence of multimedia enabled devices, particularly the incorporation of cameras in mobile phones, and the accelerated revolutions in the low cost storage devices, boosts the multimedia data production rate drastically. Witnessing such an iniquitousness of digital images and videos, the research community has been projecting the issue of its significant utilization and management. Stored in monumental multimedia corpora, digital data need to be retrieved and organized in an intelligent way, leaning on the rich semantics involved. The utilization of these image and video collections demands proficient image and video annotation and retrieval techniques. Recently, the multimedia research community is progressively veering its emphasis to the personalization of these media. The main impediment in the image and video analysis is the semantic gap, which is the discrepancy among a user’s high-level interpretation of an image and the video and the low level computational interpretation of it. Content-based image and video annotation systems are remarkably susceptible to the semantic gap due to their reliance on low-level visual features for delineating semantically rich image and video contents. However, the fact is that the visual similarity is not semantic similarity, so there is a demand to break through this dilemma through an alternative way. The semantic gap can be narrowed by counting high-level and user-generated information in the annotation. High-level descriptions of images and or videos are more proficient of capturing the semantic meaning of multimedia content, but it is not always applicable to collect this information. It is commonly agreed that the problem of high level semantic annotation of multimedia is still far from being answered. This dissertation puts forward approaches for intelligent multimedia semantic extraction for high level annotation. This dissertation intends to bridge the gap between the visual features and semantics. It proposes a framework for annotation enhancement and refinement for the object/concept annotated images and videos datasets. The entire theme is to first purify the datasets from noisy keyword and then expand the concepts lexically and commonsensical to fill the vocabulary and lexical gap to achieve high level semantics for the corpus. This dissertation also explored a novel approach for high level semantic (HLS) propagation through the images corpora. The HLS propagation takes the advantages of the semantic intensity (SI), which is the concept dominancy factor in the image and annotation based semantic similarity of the images. As we are aware of the fact that the image is the combination of various concepts and among the list of concepts some of them are more dominant then the other, while semantic similarity of the images are based on the SI and concept semantic similarity among the pair of images. Moreover, the HLS exploits the clustering techniques to group similar images, where a single effort of the human experts to assign high level semantic to a randomly selected image and propagate to other images through clustering. The investigation has been made on the LabelMe image and LabelMe video dataset. Experiments exhibit that the proposed approaches perform a noticeable improvement towards bridging the semantic gap and reveal that our proposed system outperforms the traditional systems
A framework for interrogating social media images to reveal an emergent archive of war
The visual image has long been central to how war is seen, contested and legitimised, remembered and forgotten. Archives are pivotal to these ends as is their ownership and access, from state and other official repositories through to the countless photographs scattered and hidden from a collective understanding of what war looks like in individual collections and dusty attics. With the advent and rapid development of social media, however, the amateur and the professional, the illicit and the sanctioned, the personal and the official, and the past and the present, all seem to inhabit the same connected and chaotic space.However, to even begin to render intelligible the complexity, scale and volume of what war looks like in social media archives is a considerable task, given the limitations of any traditional human-based method of collection and analysis. We thus propose the production of a series of ‘snapshots’, using computer-aided extraction and identification techniques to try to offer an experimental way in to conceiving a new imaginary of war. We were particularly interested in testing to see if twentieth century wars, obviously initially captured via pre-digital means, had become more ‘settled’ over time in terms of their remediated presence today through their visual representations and connections on social media, compared with wars fought in digital media ecologies (i.e. those fought and initially represented amidst the volume and pervasiveness of social media images).To this end, we developed a framework for automatically extracting and analysing war images that appear in social media, using both the features of the images themselves, and the text and metadata associated with each image. The framework utilises a workflow comprising four core stages: (1) information retrieval, (2) data pre-processing, (3) feature extraction, and (4) machine learning. Recuperação de informação multimodal em repositórios de imagem médica
The proliferation of digital medical imaging modalities in hospitals and other
diagnostic facilities has created huge repositories of valuable data, often
not fully explored. Moreover, the past few years show a growing trend
of data production. As such, studying new ways to index, process and
retrieve medical images becomes an important subject to be addressed by
the wider community of radiologists, scientists and engineers. Content-based
image retrieval, which encompasses various methods, can exploit the visual
information of a medical imaging archive, and is known to be beneficial to
practitioners and researchers. However, the integration of the latest systems
for medical image retrieval into clinical workflows is still rare, and their
effectiveness still show room for improvement.
This thesis proposes solutions and methods for multimodal information
retrieval, in the context of medical imaging repositories. The major
contributions are a search engine for medical imaging studies supporting
multimodal queries in an extensible archive; a framework for automated
labeling of medical images for content discovery; and an assessment and
proposal of feature learning techniques for concept detection from medical
images, exhibiting greater potential than feature extraction algorithms that
were pertinently used in similar tasks. These contributions, each in their
own dimension, seek to narrow the scientific and technical gap towards
the development and adoption of novel multimodal medical image retrieval
systems, to ultimately become part of the workflows of medical practitioners,
teachers, and researchers in healthcare.A proliferação de modalidades de imagem médica digital, em hospitais,
clÃnicas e outros centros de diagnóstico, levou à criação de enormes
repositórios de dados, frequentemente não explorados na sua totalidade.
Além disso, os últimos anos revelam, claramente, uma tendência para o
crescimento da produção de dados. Portanto, torna-se importante estudar
novas maneiras de indexar, processar e recuperar imagens médicas, por
parte da comunidade alargada de radiologistas, cientistas e engenheiros. A
recuperação de imagens baseada em conteúdo, que envolve uma grande
variedade de métodos, permite a exploração da informação visual num
arquivo de imagem médica, o que traz benefÃcios para os médicos e
investigadores. Contudo, a integração destas soluções nos fluxos de trabalho
é ainda rara e a eficácia dos mais recentes sistemas de recuperação de
imagem médica pode ser melhorada.
A presente tese propõe soluções e métodos para recuperação de informação
multimodal, no contexto de repositórios de imagem médica. As contribuições
principais são as seguintes: um motor de pesquisa para estudos de imagem
médica com suporte a pesquisas multimodais num arquivo extensÃvel; uma
estrutura para a anotação automática de imagens; e uma avaliação e
proposta de técnicas de representation learning para deteção automática de
conceitos em imagens médicas, exibindo maior potencial do que as técnicas
de extração de features visuais outrora pertinentes em tarefas semelhantes.
Estas contribuições procuram reduzir as dificuldades técnicas e cientÃficas
para o desenvolvimento e adoção de sistemas modernos de recuperação de
imagem médica multimodal, de modo a que estes façam finalmente parte
das ferramentas tÃpicas dos profissionais, professores e investigadores da área

Cancer diagnosis using deep learning: A bibliographic review
In this paper, we first describe the basics of the field of cancer diagnosis, which includes steps of cancer diagnosis followed by the typical classification methods used by doctors, providing a historical idea of cancer classification techniques to the readers. These methods include Asymmetry, Border, Color and Diameter (ABCD) method, seven-point detection method, Menzies method, and pattern analysis. They are used regularly by doctors for cancer diagnosis, although they are not considered very efficient for obtaining better performance. Moreover, considering all types of audience, the basic evaluation criteria are also discussed. The criteria include the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC curve), Area under the ROC curve (AUC), F1 score, accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, precision, dice-coefficient, average accuracy, and Jaccard index. Previously used methods are considered inefficient, asking for better and smarter methods for cancer diagnosis. Artificial intelligence and cancer diagnosis are gaining attention as a way to define better diagnostic tools. In particular, deep neural networks can be successfully used for intelligent image analysis. The basic framework of how this machine learning works on medical imaging is provided in this study, i.e., pre-processing, image segmentation and post-processing. The second part of this manuscript describes the different deep learning techniques, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), generative adversarial models (GANs), deep autoencoders (DANs), restricted Boltzmann’s machine (RBM), stacked autoencoders (SAE), convolutional autoencoders (CAE), recurrent neural networks (RNNs), long short-term memory (LTSM), multi-scale convolutional neural network (M-CNN), multi-instance learning convolutional neural network (MIL-CNN). For each technique, we provide Python codes, to allow interested readers to experiment with the cited algorithms on their own diagnostic problems. The third part of this manuscript compiles the successfully applied deep learning models for different types of cancers. Considering the length of the manuscript, we restrict ourselves to the discussion of breast cancer, lung cancer, brain cancer, and skin cancer. Recuperação multimodal e interativa de informação orientada por diversidade

Neste contexto, para atenuar a distância semântica entre as propriedades de baixo nÃvel extraÃdas do conteúdo dos objetos digitais e os conceitos semânticos de alto nÃvel (objetos, categorias, etc.) e tornar estes sistemas adaptativos à s diferentes necessidades dos usuários, modelos interativos que consideram o usuário mais próximo do processo de recuperação têm sido propostos, permitindo a sua interação com o sistema, principalmente por meio da realimentação de relevância implÃcita ou explÃcita. Analogamente, a promoção de diversidade surgiu como uma alternativa para lidar com consultas ambÃguas ou incompletas. Adicionalmente, muitos trabalhos têm tratado a ideia de minimização do esforço requerido do usuário em fornecer julgamentos de relevância, à medida que mantém nÃveis aceitáveis de eficácia. Esta tese aborda, propõe e analisa experimentalmente métodos de recuperação da informação interativos e multimodais orientados por diversidade. Este trabalho aborda de forma abrangente a literatura acerca da recuperação interativa da informação e discute sobre os avanços recentes, os grandes desafios de pesquisa e oportunidades promissoras de trabalho. Nós propusemos e avaliamos dois métodos de aprimoramento do balanço entre relevância e diversidade, os quais integram múltiplas informações de imagens, tais como: propriedades visuais, metadados textuais, informação geográfica e descritores de credibilidade dos usuários. Por sua vez, como integração de técnicas de recuperação interativa e de promoção de diversidade, visando maximizar a cobertura de múltiplas interpretações/aspectos de busca e acelerar a transferência de informação entre o usuário e o sistema, nós propusemos e avaliamos um método multimodal de aprendizado para ranqueamento utilizando realimentação de relevância sobre resultados diversificados. Nossa análise experimental mostra que o uso conjunto de múltiplas fontes de informação teve impacto positivo nos algoritmos de balanceamento entre relevância e diversidade. Estes resultados sugerem que a integração de filtragem e re-ranqueamento multimodais é eficaz para o aumento da relevância dos resultados e também como mecanismo de potencialização dos métodos de diversificação. Além disso, com uma análise experimental minuciosa, nós investigamos várias questões de pesquisa relacionadas à possibilidade de aumento da diversidade dos resultados e a manutenção ou até mesmo melhoria da sua relevância em sessões interativas. Adicionalmente, nós analisamos como o esforço em diversificar afeta os resultados gerais de uma sessão de busca e como diferentes abordagens de diversificação se comportam para diferentes modalidades de dados. Analisando a eficácia geral e também em cada iteração de realimentação de relevância, nós mostramos que introduzir diversidade nos resultados pode prejudicar resultados iniciais, enquanto que aumenta significativamente a eficácia geral em uma sessão de busca, considerando-se não apenas a relevância e diversidade geral, mas também o quão cedo o usuário é exposto ao mesmo montante de itens relevantes e nÃvel de diversidadeAbstract: Information retrieval methods, especially considering multimedia data, have evolved towards the integration of multiple sources of evidence in the analysis of the relevance of items considering a given user search task. In this context, for attenuating the semantic gap between low-level features extracted from the content of the digital objects and high-level semantic concepts (objects, categories, etc.) and making the systems adaptive to different user needs, interactive models have brought the user closer to the retrieval loop allowing user-system interaction mainly through implicit or explicit relevance feedback. Analogously, diversity promotion has emerged as an alternative for tackling ambiguous or underspecified queries. Additionally, several works have addressed the issue of minimizing the required user effort on providing relevance assessments while keeping an acceptable overall effectiveness. This thesis discusses, proposes, and experimentally analyzes multimodal and interactive diversity-oriented information retrieval methods. This work, comprehensively covers the interactive information retrieval literature and also discusses about recent advances, the great research challenges, and promising research opportunities. We have proposed and evaluated two relevance-diversity trade-off enhancement work-flows, which integrate multiple information from images, such as: visual features, textual metadata, geographic information, and user credibility descriptors. In turn, as an integration of interactive retrieval and diversity promotion techniques, for maximizing the coverage of multiple query interpretations/aspects and speeding up the information transfer between the user and the system, we have proposed and evaluated a multimodal learning-to-rank method trained with relevance feedback over diversified results. Our experimental analysis shows that the joint usage of multiple information sources positively impacted the relevance-diversity balancing algorithms. Our results also suggest that the integration of multimodal-relevance-based filtering and reranking was effective on improving result relevance and also boosted diversity promotion methods. Beyond it, with a thorough experimental analysis we have investigated several research questions related to the possibility of improving result diversity and keeping or even improving relevance in interactive search sessions. Moreover, we analyze how much the diversification effort affects overall search session results and how different diversification approaches behave for the different data modalities.
