    Collective decision making in distributed systems inspired by honeybees behaviour

    We propose a design methodology to provide cognitive capabilities to large-scale artificial distributed systems. The behaviour of such systems is the result of non-linear interactions of the individuals with each other and with the environment, and the resulting system behaviour is in general difficult to predict. The proposed methodology is based on the concept of cognitive design patterns, that is, reusable solutions to tackle problems requiring cognitive abilities (e.g., decision-making, attention, categorisation). Cognitive design patterns aim to support the engineering of distributed systems through guidelines and theoretical models that link the individual control rules of the agents to the desired global behaviour. In this paper, we propose a cognitive design pattern for collective decision-making inspired by the nest-site selection behaviour of honeybee swarms. We describe and analyse the theoretical models, and distill a set of guidelines for the implementation of collective decisions in distributed multi-agent systems. We demonstrate the validity of the cognitive design pattern in a case study involving spatial factors: the collective selection of the shortest path between two target areas. We analyse the dynamics of the multi-agent system and we show a very good adherence with the predictions of the macroscopic model. Future refinements of the cognitive design pattern will allow its usage in different application domains

    Hybrid Societies : Challenges and Perspectives in the Design of Collective Behavior in Self-organizing Systems

    Hybrid societies are self-organizing, collective systems, which are composed of different components, for example, natural and artificial parts (bio-hybrid) or human beings interacting with and through technical systems (socio-technical). Many different disciplines investigate methods and systems closely related to the design of hybrid societies. A stronger collaboration between these disciplines could allow for re-use of methods and create significant synergies. We identify three main areas of challenges in the design of self-organizing hybrid societies. First, we identify the formalization challenge. There is an urgent need for a generic model that allows a description and comparison of collective hybrid societies. Second, we identify the system design challenge. Starting from the formal specification of the system, we need to develop an integrated design process. Third, we identify the challenge of interdisciplinarity. Current research on self-organizing hybrid societies stretches over many different fields and hence requires the re-use and synthesis of methods at intersections between disciplines. We then conclude by presenting our perspective for future approaches with high potential in this area

    A Study of AI Population Dynamics with Million-agent Reinforcement Learning

    We conduct an empirical study on discovering the ordered collective dynamics obtained by a population of intelligence agents, driven by million-agent reinforcement learning. Our intention is to put intelligent agents into a simulated natural context and verify if the principles developed in the real world could also be used in understanding an artificially-created intelligent population. To achieve this, we simulate a large-scale predator-prey world, where the laws of the world are designed by only the findings or logical equivalence that have been discovered in nature. We endow the agents with the intelligence based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL). In order to scale the population size up to millions agents, a large-scale DRL training platform with redesigned experience buffer is proposed. Our results show that the population dynamics of AI agents, driven only by each agent's individual self-interest, reveals an ordered pattern that is similar to the Lotka-Volterra model studied in population biology. We further discover the emergent behaviors of collective adaptations in studying how the agents' grouping behaviors will change with the environmental resources.     Construction task allocation through the collective perception of a dynamic environment

    Building structures is a remarkable collective process but its automation remains an open challenge. Robot swarms provide a promising solution to this challenge. However, collective construction involves a number of difficulties regarding efficient robots allocation to the different activities, particularly if the goal is to reach an optimal construction rate. In this paper, we study an abstract construction scenario, where a swarm of robots is engaged in a collective perception process to estimate the density of building blocks around a construction site. The goal of this perception process is to maintain a minimum density of blocks available to the robots for construction. To maintain this density, the allocation of robots to the foraging task needs to be adjusted such that enough blocks are retrieved. Our results show a robust collective perception that enables the swarm to maintain a minimum block density under different rates of construction and foraging.     Environment classification in multiagent systems inspired by the adaptive immune system

    The adaptive immune system in vertebrates is a complex, distributed, adaptive system capable of effecting collective mul-ticellular responses. Our study introduces many of the desirable properties of this biological system to decentralized multiagent systems. We adopt the crossregulation model of the adaptive immune system involving interactions between effector and regulatory cells. Effector cells can mount beneficial immune responses to microbial antigens as well as pathologic autoimmune responses to self-antigens. Deleterious autoimmunity is prevented by regulatory cells that suppress the effectors to tolerate the self-antigens. We redeploy the crossregulation model within a multiagent system by letting each agent run an ODE-based instance of the model. Results of extensive simulation-based experiments demonstrate that a distributed multiagent system can mount different responses to distinct objects in their environment. These responses are solely a result of the dynamics between virtual cells in each agent and interactions between neighboring agents. The collective dynamics gives rise to a meaningful "self"- "nonself" classification of the environment by individual agent, even if these categories were not prescribed a priori in the agents.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
