    Multi-period, multi-product production planning in an uncertain manufacturing environment

    Les travaux de cette thèse portent sur la planification de la production multi-produits, multi-périodes avec des incertitudes de la qualité de la matière première et de la demande. Un modèle de programmation stochastique à deux étapes avec recours est tout d'abord proposé pour la prise en compte de la non-homogénéité de la matière première, et par conséquent, de l'aspect aléatoire des rendements de processus. Ces derniers sont modélisés sous forme de scénarios décrits par une distribution de probabilité stationnaire. La méthodologie adoptée est basée sur la méthode d'approximation par moyenne d'échantillonnage. L'approche est appliquée pour planifier la production dans une unité de sciage de bois et le modèle stochastique est validé par simulation de Monte Carlo. Les résultats numériques obtenus dans le cas d'une scierie de capacité moyenne montrent la viabilité de notre modèle stochastique, en comparaison au modèle équivalent déterministe. Ensuite, pour répondre aux préoccupations du preneur de décision en matière de robustesse, nous proposons deux modèles d'optimisation robuste utilisant chacun une mesure de variabilité du niveau de service différente. Un cadre de décision est développé pour choisir parmi les deux modèles d'optimisation robuste, en tenant compte du niveau du risque jugé acceptable quand à la variabilité du niveau de service. La supériorité de l'approche d'optimisation robuste, par rapport à la programmation stochastique, est confirmée dans le cas d'une usine de sciage de bois. Finalement, nous proposons un modèle de programmation stochastique qui tient compte à la fois du caractère aléatoire de la demande et du rendement. L'incertitude de la demande est modélisée par un processus stochastique dynamique qui est représenté par un arbre de scénarios. Des scénarios de rendement sont ensuite intégrés dans chaque noeud de l'arbre de scénarios de la demande, constituant ainsi un arbre hybride de scénarios. Nous proposons un modèle de programmation stochastique multi-étapes qui utilise un recours complet pour les scénarios de la demande et un recours simple pour les scénarios du rendement. Ce modèle est également appliqué au cas industriel d'une scierie et les résultats numériques obtenus montrent la supériorité du modèle stochastique multi- étapes, en comparaison avec le modèle équivalent déterministe et le modèle stochastique à deux étapes

    MULTI-OBJECTIVE ROBUST PRODUCTION PLANNING CONSIDERING WORKFORCE EFFICIENCY WITH A METAHEURISTIC SOLUTION APPROACH

    Timely delivery of products to customers is one of the main factors of customer satisfaction and a key to the survival of a manufacturing system. Therefore, decreasing wasted time in manufacturing processes significantly affects production delivery time, which can be achieved through the maximization of workforce efficiency. This issue becomes more complicated when the parameters of the production system are under uncertainty. This paper presents a bi-objective scenario-based robust production planning model considering maximizing workforce efficiency and minimizing costs where the backorder, demand, and costs are uncertain. Also, backorder, raw materials purchasing, inventory control, and manufacturing time capacity are considered. A case study in a faucet manufacturing plant is considered to solve the model. Furthermore, the ε-constraint method, the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II), the Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm 2 (SPEA2), and the Pareto Envelope-based Selection Algorithm II (PESA-II) are employed to solve the model. Also, the Taguchi method is used to tune the parameters of these algorithms. To compare these algorithms, five indicators are defined. The results show that the SPEA2 is the most time-consuming algorithm and the NSGA-II is the fastest, while their objective function values are nearly the same

    Stochastic multi-period multi-product multi-objective Aggregate Production Planning model in multi-echelon supply chain

    In this paper a multi-period multi-product multi-objective aggregate production planning (APP) model is proposed for an uncertain multi-echelon supply chain considering financial risk, customer satisfaction, and human resource training. Three conflictive objective functions and several sets of real constraints are considered concurrently in the proposed APP model. Some parameters of the proposed model are assumed to be uncertain and handled through a two-stage stochastic programming (TSSP) approach. The proposed TSSP is solved using three multi-objective solution procedures, i.e., the goal attainment technique, the modified ε-constraint method, and STEM method. The whole procedure is applied in an automotive resin and oil supply chain as a real case study wherein the efficacy and applicability of the proposed approaches are illustrated in comparison with existing experimental production planning method

    Production planning mechanisms in demand-driven wood remanufacturing industry

    L'objectif principal de cette thèse est d'étudier le problème de planification de la production dans le contexte d'une demande incertaine, d’un niveau de service variable et d’approvisionnements incontrôlables dans une usine de seconde transformation du bois. Les activités de planification et de contrôle de production sont des tâches intrinsèquement complexes et difficiles pour les entreprises de seconde transformation du bois. La complexité vient de certaines caractéristiques intrinsèques de cette industrie, comme la co-production, les procédés alternatifs divergents, les systèmes de production sur commande (make-to-order), des temps de setup variables et une offre incontrôlable. La première partie de cette thèse propose une plate-forme d'optimisation/simulation permettant de prendre des décisions concernant le choix d'une politique de planification de la production, pour traiter rapidement les demandes incertaines, tout en tenant compte des caractéristiques complexes de l'industrie de la seconde transformation du bois. À cet effet, une stratégie de re-planification périodique basée sur un horizon roulant est utilisée et validée par un modèle de simulation utilisant des données réelles provenant d'un partenaire industriel. Dans la deuxième partie de cette thèse, une méthode de gestion des stocks de sécurité dynamique est proposée afin de mieux gérer le niveau de service, qui est contraint par une capacité de production limitée et à la complexité de la gestion des temps de mise en course. Nous avons ainsi développé une approche de re-planification périodique à deux phases, dans laquelle des capacités non-utilisées (dans la première phase) sont attribuées (dans la seconde phase) afin de produire certains produits jugés importants, augmentant ainsi la capacité du système à atteindre le niveau de stock de sécurité. Enfin, dans la troisième partie de la thèse, nous étudions l’impact d’un approvisionnement incontrôlable sur la planification de la production. Différents scénarios d'approvisionnement servent à identifier les seuils critiques dans les variations de l’offre. Le cadre proposé permet aux gestionnaires de comprendre l'impact de politiques d'approvisionnement proposées pour faire face aux incertitudes. Les résultats obtenus à travers les études de cas considérés montrent que les nouvelles approches proposées dans cette thèse constituent des outils pratiques et efficaces pour la planification de production du bois.The main objective of this thesis is to investigate the production planning problem in the context of uncertain demand, variable service level, and uncontrollable supply in a wood remanufacturing mill. Production planning and control activities are complex and represent difficult tasks for wood remanufacturers. The complexity comes from inherent characteristics of the industry such as divergent co-production, alternative processes, make-to-order, short customer lead times, variable setup time, and uncontrollable supply. The first part of this thesis proposes an optimization/simulation platform to make decisions about the selection of a production planning policy to deal swiftly with uncertain demands, under the complex characteristics of the wood remanufacturing industry. For this purpose, a periodic re-planning strategy based on a rolling horizon was used and validated through a simulation model using real data from an industrial partner. The computational results highlighted the significance of using the re-planning model as a practical tool for production planning under unstable demands. In the second part, a dynamic safety stock method was proposed to better manage service level, which was threatened by issues related to limited production capacity and the complexity of setup time. We developed a two-phase periodic re-planning approach whereby idle capacities were allocated to produce more important products thus increasing the realization of safety stock level. Numerical results indicated that the solution of the two-phase method was superior to the initial method in terms of backorder level as well as inventory level. Finally, we studied the impact of uncontrollable supply on demand-driven wood remanufacturing production planning through an optimization and simulation framework. Different supply scenarios were used to identify the safety threshold of supply changes. The proposed framework provided managers with a novel advanced planning approach that allowed understanding the impact of supply policies to deal with uncertainties. In general, the wood products industry offers a rich environment for dealing with uncertainties for which the literature fails to provide efficient solutions. Regarding the results that were obtained through the case studies, we believe that approaches proposed in this thesis can be considered as novel and practical tools for wood remanufacturing production planning

    QAmplifyNet: Pushing the Boundaries of Supply Chain Backorder Prediction Using Interpretable Hybrid Quantum - Classical Neural Network

    Supply chain management relies on accurate backorder prediction for optimizing inventory control, reducing costs, and enhancing customer satisfaction. However, traditional machine-learning models struggle with large-scale datasets and complex relationships, hindering real-world data collection. This research introduces a novel methodological framework for supply chain backorder prediction, addressing the challenge of handling large datasets. Our proposed model, QAmplifyNet, employs quantum-inspired techniques within a quantum-classical neural network to predict backorders effectively on short and imbalanced datasets. Experimental evaluations on a benchmark dataset demonstrate QAmplifyNet's superiority over classical models, quantum ensembles, quantum neural networks, and deep reinforcement learning. Its proficiency in handling short, imbalanced datasets makes it an ideal solution for supply chain management. To enhance model interpretability, we use Explainable Artificial Intelligence techniques. Practical implications include improved inventory control, reduced backorders, and enhanced operational efficiency. QAmplifyNet seamlessly integrates into real-world supply chain management systems, enabling proactive decision-making and efficient resource allocation. Future work involves exploring additional quantum-inspired techniques, expanding the dataset, and investigating other supply chain applications. This research unlocks the potential of quantum computing in supply chain optimization and paves the way for further exploration of quantum-inspired machine learning models in supply chain management. Our framework and QAmplifyNet model offer a breakthrough approach to supply chain backorder prediction, providing superior performance and opening new avenues for leveraging quantum-inspired techniques in supply chain management

    An Advanced Heuristic for Multiple-Option Spare Parts Procurement after End-of-Production

    After-sales service is a major profit generator for more and more OEMs in industries with durable products. Successful engagement in after-sales service improves customer loyalty and allows for competitive differentiation through superior service like an extended service period after end of production during which customers are guaranteed to be provided with service parts. In order to fulfill the service guarantee in these cases, an effective and efficient spare parts management has to be implemented, which is challenging due to the high uncertainty concerning spare parts demand over such a long time horizon. The traditional way of spare parts acquisition for the service phase is to set up a huge final lot at the end of regular production of the parent product which is sufficient to fulfill demand up to the end of the service time. This strategy results in extremely high inventory levels over a long period and generates major holding costs and a high level of obsolescence risk. With increasing service time more flexible options for spare parts procurement after end of production gain more and more importance. In our paper we focus on the two most relevant ones, namely extra production and remanufacturing. Managing all three options leads to a complicated stochastic dynamic decision problem. For that problem type, however, a quite simple combined decision rule with order-up-to levels for extra production and remanufacturing turns out to be very effective. We propose a heuristic procedure for parameter determination which accounts for the main stochastic and dynamic interactions between the different order-up-to levels, but still consists of quite simple calculations so that it can be applied to problem instances of arbitrary size. In a numerical study we show that this heuristic performs extremely well under a wide range of conditions so that it can be strongly recommended as a decision support tool for the multi-option spare parts procurement problem.Spare Parts, Inventory Management, Reverse Logistics, Final Order

    Optimal consignment stocking policies for a supply chain under different system constraints

    The research aims are to enable the decision maker of an integrated vendor-buyer system under Consignment Stock (CS) policy to make the optimal/sub-optimal production/replenishment decisions when some general and realistic critical factors are considered. In the system, the vendor produces one product at a finite rate and ships the outputs by a number of equal-sized lots within a production cycle. Under a long-term CS agreement, the vendor maintains a certain inventory level at the buyer’s warehouse, and the buyer compensates the vendor only for the consumed products. The holding cost consists of a storage component and a financial component. Moreover, both of the cases that the unit holding costs may be higher at the buyer or at the vendor are considered. Based upon such a system, four sets of inventory models are developed each of which considers one more factor than the former. The first set of models allows a controllable lead-time with an additional investment and jointly determines the shipping size, the number of shipments, and the lead time, that minimize the yearly joint total expected cost (JTEC) of the system. The second set of models considers a buyer’s capacity limitation which causes some shipments to be delayed so that the arrival of these shipments does not cause the buyer’s inventory to go beyond its limitation. As a result, the number of delayed shipments is added as the fourth decision variable. A variable demand rate is allowed in the third set of models. Uncertainty caused by the varying demand are controlled by a safety factor, which becomes the fifth decision variable. Finally, the risk of obsolescence of the product is considered in the fourth model. The first model is solved analytically, whereas the rest are not, mainly because of the complexity of the problem and the number of variables being considered. Three doubly-hybrid meta-heuristic algorithms that combine two different hybrid meta-heuristic algorithms are developed to provide a solution procedure for the rest of models. Numerical experiments illustrate the solution procedures and reveal the effects of the buyer’s capacity limitation, the effects of the variable demand rate, and the effects of the risk of obsolescence, on the system. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis shows that some of the system parameters (such as the backorder penalty, the extra space penalty, the ratio of the unit holding cost of the vendor over that of the buyer) are very influential to the joint system total cost and the optimal solutions of the decision variables
