    Unmanned Ground Vehicle navigation and coverage hole patching in Wireless Sensor Networks

    This dissertation presents a study of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) navigation and coverage hole patching in coordinate-free and localization-free Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Navigation and coverage maintenance are related problems since coverage hole patching requires effective navigation in the sensor network environment. A coordinate-free and localization-free WSN that is deployed in an ad-hoc fashion and does not assume the availability of GPS information is considered. The system considered is decentralized and can be self-organized in an event-driven manner where no central controller or global map is required. A single-UGV, single-destination navigation problem is addressed first. The UGV is equipped with a set of wireless listeners that determine the slope of a navigation potential field generated by the wireless sensor and actuator network. The navigation algorithm consists of sensor node level-number assignment that is determined based on a hop-distance from the network destination node and UGV navigation through the potential field created by triplets of actuators in the network. A multi-UGV, multi-destination navigation problem requires a path-planning and task allocation process. UGVs inform the network about their proposed destinations, and the network provides feedback if conflicts are found. Sensor nodes store, share, and communicate to UGVs in order to allocate the navigation tasks. A special case of a single-UGV, multi-destination navigation problem that is equivalent to the well-known Traveling Salesman Problem is discussed. The coverage hole patching process starts after a UGV reaches the hole boundary. For each hole boundary edge, a new node is added along its perpendicular bisector, and the entire hole is patched by adding nodes around the hole boundary edges. The communication complexity and present simulation examples and experimental results are analyzed. Then, a Java-based simulation testbed that is capable of simulating both the centralized and distributed sensor and actuator network algorithms is developed. The laboratory experiment demonstrates the navigation algorithm (single-UGV, single-destination) using Cricket wireless sensors and an actuator network and Pioneer 3-DX robot

    Adoption of vehicular ad hoc networking protocols by networked robots

    This paper focuses on the utilization of wireless networking in the robotics domain. Many researchers have already equipped their robots with wireless communication capabilities, stimulated by the observation that multi-robot systems tend to have several advantages over their single-robot counterparts. Typically, this integration of wireless communication is tackled in a quite pragmatic manner, only a few authors presented novel Robotic Ad Hoc Network (RANET) protocols that were designed specifically with robotic use cases in mind. This is in sharp contrast with the domain of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET). This observation is the starting point of this paper. If the results of previous efforts focusing on VANET protocols could be reused in the RANET domain, this could lead to rapid progress in the field of networked robots. To investigate this possibility, this paper provides a thorough overview of the related work in the domain of robotic and vehicular ad hoc networks. Based on this information, an exhaustive list of requirements is defined for both types. It is concluded that the most significant difference lies in the fact that VANET protocols are oriented towards low throughput messaging, while RANET protocols have to support high throughput media streaming as well. Although not always with equal importance, all other defined requirements are valid for both protocols. This leads to the conclusion that cross-fertilization between them is an appealing approach for future RANET research.     Environment Search Planning Subject to High Robot Localization Uncertainty

    As robots find applications in more complex roles, ranging from search and rescue to healthcare and services, they must be robust to greater levels of localization uncertainty and uncertainty about their environments. Without consideration for such uncertainties, robots will not be able to compensate accordingly, potentially leading to mission failure or injury to bystanders. This work addresses the task of searching a 2D area while reducing localization uncertainty. Wherein, the environment provides low uncertainty pose updates from beacons with a short range, covering only part of the environment. Otherwise the robot localizes using dead reckoning, relying on wheel encoder and yaw rate information from a gyroscope. As such, outside of the regions with position updates, there will be unconstrained localization error growth over time. The work contributes a Belief Markov Decision Process formulation for solving the search problem and evaluates the performance using Partially Observable Monte Carlo Planning (POMCP). Additionally, the work contributes an approximate Markov Decision Process formulation and reduced complexity state representation. The approximate problem is evaluated using value iteration. To provide a baseline, the Google OR-Tools package is used to solve the travelling salesman problem (TSP). Results are verified by simulating a differential drive robot in the Gazebo simulation environment. POMCP results indicate planning can be tuned to prioritize constraining uncertainty at the cost of increasing path length. The MDP formulation provides consistently lower uncertainty with minimal increases in path length over the TSP solution. Both formulations show improved coverage outcomes

    A Decentralized Architecture for Active Sensor Networks

    This thesis is concerned with the Distributed Information Gathering (DIG) problem in which a Sensor Network is tasked with building a common representation of environment. The problem is motivated by the advantages offered by distributed autonomous sensing systems and the challenges they present. The focus of this study is on Macro Sensor Networks, characterized by platform mobility, heterogeneous teams, and long mission duration. The system under consideration may consist of an arbitrary number of mobile autonomous robots, stationary sensor platforms, and human operators, all linked in a network. This work describes a comprehensive framework called Active Sensor Network (ASN) which addresses the tasks of information fusion, decistion making, system configuration, and user interaction. The main design objectives are scalability with the number of robotic platforms, maximum flexibility in implementation and deployment, and robustness to component and communication failure. The framework is described from three complementary points of view: architecture, algorithms, and implementation. The main contribution of this thesis is the development of the ASN architecture. Its design follows three guiding principles: decentralization, modularity, and locality of interactions. These principles are applied to all aspects of the architecture and the framework in general. To achieve flexibility, the design approach emphasizes interactions between components rather than the definition of the components themselves. The architecture specifies a small set of interfaces sufficient to implement a wide range of information gathering systems. In the area of algorithms, this thesis builds on the earlier work on Decentralized Data Fusion (DDF) and its extension to information-theoretic decistion making. It presents the Bayesian Decentralized Data Fusion (BDDF) algorithm formulated for environment features represented by a general probability density function. Several specific representations are also considered: Gaussian, discrete, and the Certainty Grid map. Well known algorithms for these representations are shown to implement various aspects of the Bayesian framework. As part of the ASN implementation, a practical indoor sensor network has been developed and tested. Two series of experiments were conducted, utilizing two types of environment representation: 1) point features with Gaussian position uncertainty and 2) Certainty Grid maps. The network was operational for several days at a time, with individual platforms coming on and off-line. On several occasions, the network consisted of 39 software components. The lessons learned during the system's development may be applicable to other heterogeneous distributed systems with data-intensive algorithms

    Collaboratively Navigating Autonomous Systems

    The objective of this project is to focus on technologies for enabling heterogeneous networks of autonomous vehicles to cooperate together on a specific task. The prototyped test bed consists of a retrofitted electric golf cart and a quadrotor designed to perform distributed information gathering to guide decision making across the entire test bed. The system prototype demonstrates several aspects of this technology and lays the groundwork for future projects in this area

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThe technological advances in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are exponentially improving over the last century. The objective is to provide intelligent and innovative services for the different modes of transportation, towards a better, safer, coordinated and smarter transport networks. The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) focus is divided into two main categories; the first is to improve existing components of the transport networks, while the second is to develop intelligent vehicles which facilitate the transportation process. Different research efforts have been exerted to tackle various aspects in the fields of the automated vehicles. Accordingly, this thesis is addressing the problem of multiple automated vehicles cooperation and coordination. At first, 3DCoAutoSim driving simulator was developed in Unity game engine and connected to Robot Operating System (ROS) framework and Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO). 3DCoAutoSim is an abbreviation for "3D Simulator for Cooperative Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Vehicles Simulator". 3DCoAutoSim was tested under different circumstances and conditions, afterward, it was validated through carrying-out several controlled experiments and compare the results against their counter reality experiments. The obtained results showed the efficiency of the simulator to handle different situations, emulating real world vehicles. Next is the development of the iCab platforms, which is an abbreviation for "Intelligent Campus Automobile". The platforms are two electric golf-carts that were modified mechanically, electronically and electrically towards the goal of automated driving. Each iCab was equipped with several on-board embedded computers, perception sensors and auxiliary devices, in order to execute the necessary actions for self-driving. Moreover, the platforms are capable of several Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication schemes, applying three layers of control, utilizing cooperation architecture for platooning, executing localization systems, mapping systems, perception systems, and finally several planning systems. Hundreds of experiments were carried-out for the validation of each system in the iCab platform. Results proved the functionality of the platform to self-drive from one point to another with minimal human intervention.Los avances tecnológicos en Sistemas Inteligentes de Transporte (ITS) han crecido de forma exponencial durante el último siglo. El objetivo de estos avances es el de proveer de sistemas innovadores e inteligentes para ser aplicados a los diferentes medios de transporte, con el fin de conseguir un transporte mas eficiente, seguro, coordinado e inteligente. El foco de los ITS se divide principalmente en dos categorías; la primera es la mejora de los componentes ya existentes en las redes de transporte, mientras que la segunda es la de desarrollar vehículos inteligentes que hagan más fácil y eficiente el transporte. Diferentes esfuerzos de investigación se han llevado a cabo con el fin de solucionar los numerosos aspectos asociados con la conducción autónoma. Esta tesis propone una solución para la cooperación y coordinación de múltiples vehículos. Para ello, en primer lugar se desarrolló un simulador (3DCoAutoSim) de conducción basado en el motor de juegos Unity, conectado al framework Robot Operating System (ROS) y al simulador Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO). 3DCoAutoSim ha sido probado en diferentes condiciones y circunstancias, para posteriormente validarlo con resultados a través de varios experimentos reales controlados. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron la eficiencia del simulador para manejar diferentes situaciones, emulando los vehículos en el mundo real. En segundo lugar, se desarrolló la plataforma de investigación Intelligent Campus Automobile (iCab), que consiste en dos carritos eléctricos de golf, que fueron modificados eléctrica, mecánica y electrónicamente para darle capacidades autónomas. Cada iCab se equipó con diferentes computadoras embebidas, sensores de percepción y unidades auxiliares, con la finalidad de transformarlos en vehículos autónomos. Además, se les han dado capacidad de comunicación multimodal (V2X), se les han aplicado tres capas de control, incorporando una arquitectura de cooperación para operación en modo tren, diferentes esquemas de localización, mapeado, percepción y planificación de rutas. Innumerables experimentos han sido realizados para validar cada uno de los diferentes sistemas incorporados.     Cooperative Coverage Control of Multi-Agent Systems

    In this dissertation, motion coordination strategies are proposed for multiple mobile agents over an environment. It is desired to perform surveillance and coverage of a given area using a Voronoi-based locational optimization framework. Efficient control laws are developed for the coordination of a group of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) with double-integrator and non-holonomic dynamics. The autonomous vehicles aim to spread out over the environment while more focus is directed towards areas of higher interest. It is assumed that the so-called ``operation costs'' of different agents are not the same. The center multiplicatively-weighted Voronoi configuration is introduced, which is shown to be the optimal configuration for agents. A distributed control strategy is also provided which guarantees the convergence of the agents to this optimal configuration. To improve the cooperation performance and ensure safety in the presence of inter-agent communication delays, a spatial partition is used which takes the information about the delay into consideration to divide the field. The problem is also extended to the case when the sensing effectiveness of every agent varies during the mission, and a novel partition is proposed to address this variation of the problem. To avoid obstacles as well as collision between agents in the underlying coverage control problem, a distributed navigation-function-based controller is developed. The field is partitioned to the Voronoi cells first, and the agents are relocated under the proposed controller such that a pre-specified cost function is minimized while collision and obstacle avoidance is guaranteed. The coverage problem in uncertain environments is also investigated, where a number of search vehicles are deployed to explore the environment. Finally, the effectiveness of all proposed algorithms in this study is demonstrated by simulations and experiments on a real testbed
