    Data-Driven Transducer Design and Identification for Internally-Paced Motor Brain Computer Interfaces: A Review

    Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are systems that establish a direct communication pathway between the users' brain activity and external effectors. They offer the potential to improve the quality of life of motor-impaired patients. Motor BCIs aim to permit severely motor-impaired users to regain limb mobility by controlling orthoses or prostheses. In particular, motor BCI systems benefit patients if the decoded actions reflect the users' intentions with an accuracy that enables them to efficiently interact with their environment. One of the main challenges of BCI systems is to adapt the BCI's signal translation blocks to the user to reach a high decoding accuracy. This paper will review the literature of data-driven and user-specific transducer design and identification approaches and it focuses on internally-paced motor BCIs. In particular, continuous kinematic biomimetic and mental-task decoders are reviewed. Furthermore, static and dynamic decoding approaches, linear and non-linear decoding, offline and real-time identification algorithms are considered. The current progress and challenges related to the design of clinical-compatible motor BCI transducers are additionally discussed

This fact is generated by highly complex challenges imposed by robotic systems, especially the requirement on intelligent and autonomous operation.     Putting artificial intelligence into wearable human-machine interfaces – towards a generic, self-improving controller

    The standard approach to creating a machine learning based controller is to provide users with a number of gestures that they need to make; record multiple instances of each gesture using specific sensors; extract the relevant sensor data and pass it through a supervised learning algorithm until the algorithm can successfully identify the gestures; map each gesture to a control signal that performs a desired outcome. This approach is both inflexible and time consuming. The primary contribution of this research was to investigate a new approach to putting artificial intelligence into wearable human-machine interfaces by creating a Generic, Self-Improving Controller. It was shown to learn two user-defined static gestures with an accuracy of 100% in less than 10 samples per gesture; three in less than 20 samples per gesture; and four in less than 35 samples per gesture. Pre-defined dynamic gestures were more difficult to learn. It learnt two with an accuracy of 90% in less than 6,000 samples per gesture; and four with an accuracy of 70% after 50,000 samples per gesture. The research has resulted in a number of additional contributions: • The creation of a source-independent hardware data capture, processing, fusion and storage tool for standardising the capture and storage of historical copies of data captured from multiple different sensors. • An improved Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) algorithm for calculating orientation quaternions that is five orders of magnitude more precise. • The reformulation of the regularised TD learning algorithm; the reformulation of the TD learning algorithm applied the artificial neural network back-propagation algorithm; and the combination of the reformulations into a new, regularised TD learning algorithm applied to the artificial neural network back-propagation algorithm. • The creation of a Generic, Self-Improving Predictor that can use different learning algorithms and a Flexible Artificial Neural Network.Open Acces

    Neuromechanical Tuning for Arm Motor Control

    Movement is a fundamental behavior that allows us to interact with the external world. Its importance to human health is most evident when it becomes impaired due to disease or injury. Physical and occupational rehabilitation remains the most common treatment for these types of disorders. Although therapeutic interventions may improve motor function, residual deficits are common for many pathologies, such as stroke. The development of novel therapeutics is dependent upon a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms that govern movement. Movement of the human body adheres to the principles of classic Newtonian mechanics. However, due to the inherent complexity of the body and the highly variable repertoire of environmental contexts in which it operates, the musculoskeletal system presents a challenging control problem and the onus is on the central nervous system to reliably solve this problem. The neural motor system is comprised of numerous efferent and afferent pathways with a hierarchical organization which create a complex arrangement of feedforward and feedback circuits. However, the strategy that the neural motor system employs to reliably control these complex mechanics is still unknown. This dissertation will investigate the neural control of mechanics employing a “bottom-up” approach. It is organized into three research chapters with an additional introductory chapter and a chapter addressing final conclusions. Chapter 1 provides a brief description of the anatomical and physiological principles of the human motor system and the challenges and strategies that may be employed to control it. Chapter 2 describes a computational study where we developed a musculoskeletal model of the upper limb to investigate the complex mechanical interactions due to muscle geometry. Muscle lengths and moment arms contribute to force and torque generation, but the inherent redundancy of these actuators create a high-dimensional control problem. By characterizing these relationships, we found mechanical coupling of muscle lengths which the nervous system could exploit. Chapter 3 describes a study of muscle spindle contribution to muscle coactivation using a computational model of primary afferent activity. We investigated whether these afferents could contribute to motoneuron recruitment during voluntary reaching tasks in humans and found that afferent activity was orthogonal to that of muscle activity. Chapter 4 describes a study of the role of the descending corticospinal tract in the compensation of limb dynamics during arm reaching movements. We found evidence that corticospinal excitability is modulated in proportion to muscle activity and that the coefficients of proportionality vary in the course of these movements.     Deep Learning in EEG: Advance of the Last Ten-Year Critical Period

    Deep learning has achieved excellent performance in a wide range of domains, especially in speech recognition and computer vision. Relatively less work has been done for EEG, but there is still significant progress attained in the last decade. Due to the lack of a comprehensive and topic widely covered survey for deep learning in EEG, we attempt to summarize recent progress to provide an overview, as well as perspectives for future developments. We first briefly mention the artifacts removal for EEG signal and then introduce deep learning models that have been utilized in EEG processing and classification. Subsequently, the applications of deep learning in EEG are reviewed by categorizing them into groups such as brain-computer interface, disease detection, and emotion recognition. They are followed by the discussion, in which the pros and cons of deep learning are presented and future directions and challenges for deep learning in EEG are proposed. We hope that this paper could serve as a summary of past work for deep learning in EEG and the beginning of further developments and achievements of EEG studies based on deep learning

    Signal processing and analytics of multimodal biosignals

    Ph. D. ThesisBiosignals have been extensively studied by researchers for applications in diagnosis, therapy, and monitoring. As these signals are complex, they have to be crafted as features for machine learning to work. This begs the question of how to extract features that are relevant and yet invariant to uncontrolled extraneous factors. In the last decade or so, deep learning has been used to extract features from the raw signals automatically. Furthermore, with the proliferation of sensors, more raw signals are now available, making it possible to use multi-view learning to improve on the predictive performance of deep learning. The purpose of this work is to develop an effective deep learning model of the biosignals and make use of the multi-view information in the sequential data. This thesis describes two proposed methods, namely: (1) The use of a deep temporal convolution network to provide the temporal context of the signals to the deeper layers of a deep belief net. (2) The use of multi-view spectral embedding to blend the complementary data in an ensemble. This work uses several annotated biosignal data sets that are available in the open domain. They are non-stationary, noisy and non-linear signals. Using these signals in their raw form without feature engineering will yield poor results with the traditional machine learning techniques. By passing abstractions that are more useful through the deep belief net and blending the complementary data in an ensemble, there will be improvement in performance in terms of accuracy and variance, as shown by the results of 10-fold validations.Nanyang Polytechni
