Space-time tourist behaviour is influenced by numerous factors related both to tourists and the destination. Yet, however complex it may be, understanding and to some extent managing the way tourists move in space and time is crucial to ensuring the quality of their experience, as well as the effective and sustainable management of destinations and attractions. In the rural wine tourism context, studies on space-time behaviour are rare. The present study uses empirical data collected from tourists staying in hotels of the Bairrada Wine Route territory (N = 116), combining a GPS tracking study with a questionnaire survey. Using a time-geographical analytical approach, the GPS tracking data were mapped for a more detailed analysis of the tourists’ movements in the Bairrada terroir. The findings highlight specificities of tourist consumption in the context of rural wine regions and provide valuable insights for destination planning, service design and marketing of the Bairrada Wine Route.O comportamento turístico espaciotemporal é influenciado por diversos fatores relacionados tanto com os turistas como com o destino.

Analysing Human Mobility Patterns of Hiking Activities through Complex Network Theory

The exploitation of high volume of geolocalized data from social sport tracking applications of outdoor activities can be useful for natural resource planning and to understand the human mobility patterns during leisure activities. This geolocalized data represents the selection of hike activities according to subjective and objective factors such as personal goals, personal abilities, trail conditions or weather conditions. In our approach, human mobility patterns are analysed from trajectories which are generated by hikers. We propose the generation of the trail network identifying special points in the overlap of trajectories. Trail crossings and trailheads define our network and shape topological features. We analyse the trail network of Balearic Islands, as a case of study, using complex weighted network theory. The analysis is divided into the four seasons of the year to observe the impact of weather conditions on the network topology. The number of visited places does not decrease despite the large difference in the number of samples of the two seasons with larger and lower activity. It is in summer season where it is produced the most significant variation in the frequency and localization of activities from inland regions to coastal areas. Finally, we compare our model with other related studies where the network possesses a different purpose. One finding of our approach is the detection of regions with relevant importance where landscape interventions can be applied in function of the communities.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, accepte

Non-spatial and spatial characteristics of international tourists’ behaviour in Melaka World Heritage Site

World Heritage Sites (WHSs) nowadays are facing an increasing number of tourist arrivals after being designated as a WHS. This burgeoning popularity has negatively impacted the sustainability of the historic environment of the sites. Too many pressures from human activity, especially tourists at the WHS, could potentially damage the physical condition of the site and compromise its Outstanding Universal Value. Previous studies on managing a WHS have only focused on policy designation and participation from local stakeholders. However, the tourist perspective is often neglected. Therefore, there is an emerging view that tourists should be placed at the centre of the management and planning process. In this context, understanding tourist behaviour is one of the important aspects in managing a WHS. However, tourist behaviour is a complex phenomenon. Tourist behaviour constantly changes because each tourist has his or her own preferences. One of the ways to determine tourist behaviour is through their consumption at the destination. Therefore, the study aims to measure international tourist behaviour through their consumption by integrating their non-spatial and spatial characteristics. In this case, Melaka WHS is used as the study area. The study used comparative quantitative techniques consisting of both traditional and advanced tracking methods. The method was conducted in two stages to acquire the non-spatial and spatial data of tourists at budget hotels within the core zone area in Melaka WHS. A total of 384 Free Independent Tourists participated in the survey for the study. Questionnaires, trip diaries, and tracking devices were the main instruments for capturing data. The results reveal a degree of attachment between the non-spatial and spatial characteristics of international tourists. Additionally, country of origin and age are found to influence the dynamic characteristics of tourists. On the other hand, the time factor strongly correlates with other tourist spatial characteristics. Interestingly, money spent at each attraction proves to be a reliable source in understanding tourist behaviour. The findings also indicate that tourist spatial behavioural pattern is highly influenced by dynamic characteristics. The evaluation of tourist behaviour based on their consumption shows that international tourists essentially consume more spaces and time at primary elements such as historical attractions. However, they consume more money at secondary elements such as food and shopping. The finding on tourist behaviour is important for responsible authorities. These provide a different point of view in managing tourist behaviour and movement. Interviews were also conducted to validate the findings from those responsible and knowledgeable in managing WHS. The results on tourist behaviour can be used to establish effective tools such as carrying capacity, wayfinding, and transportation management, to develop a better visitor management plan for Melaka WHS

    Exploring pedestrian movement patterns

The main objective of this thesis is to develop an approach for exploring, analysing and interpreting movement patterns of pedestrians interacting with the environment. This objective is broken down in sub-objectives related to four research questions. A case study of the movement of visitors in a natural area is used to develop and demonstrate the approach. To achieve the objectives, four research questions were formulated: • How can movement patterns evidencing the stopping behaviour of pedestrians be detected? • What is the validity of the detected movement patterns for describing stopping behaviour of pedestrians? • How can movement patterns be applied to study the movement behaviour of visitors in natural areas? • How can movement patterns be formalized to represent the interactions between pedestrians and between pedestrians and their environment

Science-based restoration monitoring of coastal habitats, Volume Two: Tools for monitoring coastal habitats

    Get PDF
Healthy coastal habitats are not only important ecologically; they also support healthy coastal communities and improve the quality of people’s lives. Despite their many benefits and values, coastal habitats have been systematically modified, degraded, and destroyed throughout the United States and its protectorates beginning with European colonization in the 1600’s (Dahl 1990). As a result, many coastal habitats around the United States are in desperate need of restoration. The monitoring of restoration projects, the focus of this document, is necessary to ensure that restoration efforts are successful, to further the science, and to increase the efficiency of future restoration efforts

    Supply Chain

    Get PDF
Traditionally supply chain management has meant factories, assembly lines, warehouses, transportation vehicles, and time sheets. Modern supply chain management is a highly complex, multidimensional problem set with virtually endless number of variables for optimization. An Internet enabled supply chain may have just-in-time delivery, precise inventory visibility, and up-to-the-minute distribution-tracking capabilities. Technology advances have enabled supply chains to become strategic weapons that can help avoid disasters, lower costs, and make money. From internal enterprise processes to external business transactions with suppliers, transporters, channels and end-users marks the wide range of challenges researchers have to handle. The aim of this book is at revealing and illustrating this diversity in terms of scientific and theoretical fundamentals, prevailing concepts as well as current practical applications
