High turnover among millennials is a challenge in Chinese business organization. It is even more so in Chinese state-owned banks where the Guanxi Human Resource Management (HRM) practices have been prominent. This study investigates the pathways and boundary conditions through which guanxi HRM practices affect the turnover intention of millennials. Based on social exchange theory, this study establishes the theoretical model about how guanxi HRM practices affect the turnover intention of millennial employees. Organizational identification and leader-member exchange (LMX) are introduced as mediators and traditionality as a moderator to examine the different rules by which guanxi HRM practices affect millennials’ turnover intention. Using a sample of 467 participants, hypotheses were tested through multiple regression analysis. The results indicate that: (1) Guanxi HRM practices significantly and positively predict millennials’ turnover intention; (2) organizational identification and LMX both partially mediate the positive impact of guanxi HRM practices on employee turnover intention; (3) and traditionality positively moderates the negative association between guanxi HRM practices and organizational identification as well as the negative association between guanxi HRM practices and LMX. This study enriches the literature of guanxi HRM practices by identifying the boundary conditions of traditionality. The findings have a number of managerial implications for retention of Chinese millennials in the banking industry.

In Chinese exporting, small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) need to be innovative to develop a competitive advantage. This research explored how these organizations can use two resources: 1) guanxi with customers, distributors, suppliers, and government officials; and 2) IT systems to enhance their innovation capabilities and new product performance. The moderating role of an organization’s proactiveness with respect to new product development is also examined. The resource-based view provides the theoretical support for the research. A conceptual model is developed and tested using survey data gathered from 210 Chinese SMEs in manufacturing industries that were analyzed using SmartPLS 2.0. Results show that IT systems are positively related to innovation capability. The relationship between guanxi and innovation capability is significant for firms that exhibit high levels of proactiveness but not when proactiveness is low

Guanxi, a Chinese term that defines social networks of power and benefits, can be divided into inter-personal and inter-organizational relationships. Guanxi significantly influences construction innovation in China. Many studies have examined the relationship between guanxi and construction innovation at the project or organizational level. However, few of these studies explain how guanxi might affect an individual’s innovative behaviour from a double-level perspective. This paper builds on social capital theory and social exchange theory to examine guanxi’s role in motivating innovative behaviour in a China-specific construction context. It investigates the main effects of inter-personal relationships on innovative behaviour, the mediating effects of knowledge sharing, and the cross-level moderating effects of inter-organizational relationships. These elements were tested using a survey that received 178 responses from 35 different organizations. The results were analysed using Hierarchical Linear Modelling (HLM) and revealed that inter-personal relationships have positive influences on innovative behaviour, thus highlighting the partial mediating effects of knowledge sharing. In addition, the analyses showed that inter-organizational relationships augment inter-personal relationships and knowledge sharing on innovative behaviour by cross-level interaction. The research findings enhance an understanding of guanxi and innovative behaviour in China-specific construction project settings, as well as verifying the significance of guanxi in stimulating innovative behaviour

Impact of Interactivity on Guanxi Network Building in the Wechat Moments: A Social Capital Perspective

Mobile social platform such as Wechat Moments has gained great popularity in China in the past few years. However, there are still a lack of studies that focus on Guanxi network building in the virtual social community. Drawing upon interactivity and social capital theory, this study develops a research model to examine the influence of perceived interactivity on users\u27 social capital and Guanxi network in the Wechat Moments. An empirical survey was conducted in China and 287 valid data were collected from Wechat users. Structural equation modelling analysis was used to test the research model. The empirical results suggest that interactivity has a strong influence on social interaction and shared understanding, which in turn promote users\u27 Guanxi network in the Wechat Moments. A post-hoc analysis further suggests that the influence of interactivity on Guanxi network is contingent upon network size. Theoretical and practical implications are illustrated in the final section

Social media present a critical role in changing and transforming workplace relationships. Drawing upon theories of Conservation of Resources and Sense-Making, this study purposes to develop a theoretical framework to describe the impact of leaders’ social media use on leader-member guanxi. We specifically propose the mediating roles of perceived social support and secure attachment, and the moderating effect of task interdependence in this relationship. This study not only contributes to research on social media in interpreting how social media improve leader-member guanxi, but also assists practitioners in interpreting and developing strategies related to social media within organizations

The influence of leader–signaled knowledge hiding on tourism employees’ work withdrawal behavior: A moderated mediating model

Even though organizations encourage the dissemination of knowledge and information among organizational members, the phenomenon of knowledge hiding still exists widely in organizations. The consequences of leader-signaled knowledge hiding are more destructive to the workplace than the consequences of employees’ knowledge hiding. It is particularly necessary to explore the influence mechanism of leader-signaled knowledge hiding on employees’ work behavior. Drawing on Conservation of Resources theory, this study establishes a moderated mediation model with emotional exhaustion as a mediating variable and supervisor-subordinate guanxi as a moderating variable. This study focuses on the consequences of leader-signaled knowledge hiding and divides leader-signaled knowledge hiding into self-practiced knowledge hiding and explicit knowledge hiding. Based on the results of 440 questionnaires from tourism employees, it is shown that leader-signaled knowledge hiding has a positive impact on employees’ work withdrawal behavior. Specifically, leader’s self-practiced knowledge hiding has a greater direct impact on employees’ work withdrawal behavior, while leader’s explicit knowledge hiding has a greater direct impact on employees’ emotional exhaustion. Emotional exhaustion plays a key mediating role in the relationship between leader-signaled knowledge hiding (i.e., self-practiced knowledge hiding and explicit knowledge hiding) and employees’ work withdrawal behavior. Supervisor-subordinate guanxi significantly moderates the positive relationship between leader-signaled knowledge hiding (i.e., self-practiced hiding and explicit knowledge hiding) and employees’ emotional exhaustion. This study is an extension of previous research on knowledge hiding. The results provide a reference for leaders to deal with knowledge hiding and improve organizational knowledge management ability
