Time-causal and time-recursive spatio-temporal receptive fields
We present an improved model and theory for time-causal and time-recursive
spatio-temporal receptive fields, based on a combination of Gaussian receptive
fields over the spatial domain and first-order integrators or equivalently
truncated exponential filters coupled in cascade over the temporal domain.
Compared to previous spatio-temporal scale-space formulations in terms of
non-enhancement of local extrema or scale invariance, these receptive fields
are based on different scale-space axiomatics over time by ensuring
non-creation of new local extrema or zero-crossings with increasing temporal
scale. Specifically, extensions are presented about (i) parameterizing the
intermediate temporal scale levels, (ii) analysing the resulting temporal
dynamics, (iii) transferring the theory to a discrete implementation, (iv)
computing scale-normalized spatio-temporal derivative expressions for
spatio-temporal feature detection and (v) computational modelling of receptive
fields in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and the primary visual cortex
(V1) in biological vision.
We show that by distributing the intermediate temporal scale levels according
to a logarithmic distribution, we obtain much faster temporal response
properties (shorter temporal delays) compared to a uniform distribution.
Specifically, these kernels converge very rapidly to a limit kernel possessing
true self-similar scale-invariant properties over temporal scales, thereby
allowing for true scale invariance over variations in the temporal scale,
although the underlying temporal scale-space representation is based on a
discretized temporal scale parameter.
We show how scale-normalized temporal derivatives can be defined for these
time-causal scale-space kernels and how the composed theory can be used for
computing basic types of scale-normalized spatio-temporal derivative

The role of the service concept in model-driven applications development
This paper identifies two paradigms that have influenced the design of distributed applications: the middleware-centred and the protocol-centred paradigm, and proposes a combined use of these two paradigms. This combined use incorporates major benefits from both paradigms: the ability to reuse middleware infrastructures and the ability to treat distributed coordination aspects as a separate object of design through the use of the service concept. A careful consideration of the service concept, and its recursive application, allows us to define an appropriate and precise notion of platform-independence that suits the needs of model-driven middleware application development
XML content warehousing: Improving sociological studies of mailing lists and web data
In this paper, we present the guidelines for an XML-based approach for the
sociological study of Web data such as the analysis of mailing lists or
databases available online. The use of an XML warehouse is a flexible solution
for storing and processing this kind of data. We propose an implemented
solution and show possible applications with our case study of profiles of
experts involved in W3C standard-setting activity. We illustrate the
sociological use of semi-structured databases by presenting our XML Schema for
mailing-list warehousing. An XML Schema allows many adjunctions or crossings of
data sources, without modifying existing data sets, while allowing possible
structural evolution. We also show that the existence of hidden data implies
increased complexity for traditional SQL users. XML content warehousing allows
altogether exhaustive warehousing and recursive queries through contents, with
far less dependence on the initial storage. We finally present the possibility
of exporting the data stored in the warehouse to commonly-used advanced
software devoted to sociological analysis

To apply the metaphysical methodology of mathematics to the logic and form of process in natural philosophy requires a metaphysics above modelling, a methodology more than method and a mathematics beyond the set based topics of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and topology. At the start of the twentieth century Alfred North Whitehead together with his former student Bertrand Russell was able to expound the form and logic of the mathematics of his day by the extensive treatment of axioms and theorems. The technical quality of this work found world acclaim and became the foundation for the advancement of science by the application of models still with us today
Logical segmentation for article extraction in digitized old newspapers
Newspapers are documents made of news item and informative articles. They are
not meant to be red iteratively: the reader can pick his items in any order he
fancies. Ignoring this structural property, most digitized newspaper archives
only offer access by issue or at best by page to their content. We have built a
digitization workflow that automatically extracts newspaper articles from
images, which allows indexing and retrieval of information at the article
level. Our back-end system extracts the logical structure of the page to
produce the informative units: the articles. Each image is labelled at the
pixel level, through a machine learning based method, then the page logical
structure is constructed up from there by the detection of structuring entities
such as horizontal and vertical separators, titles and text lines. This logical
structure is stored in a METS wrapper associated to the ALTO file produced by
the system including the OCRed text. Our front-end system provides a web high
definition visualisation of images, textual indexing and retrieval facilities,
searching and reading at the article level. Articles transcriptions can be
collaboratively corrected, which as a consequence allows for better indexing.
We are currently testing our system on the archives of the Journal de Rouen,
one of France eldest local newspaper. These 250 years of publication amount to
300 000 pages of very variable image quality and layout complexity. Test year

Connectionist Inference Models
The performance of symbolic inference tasks has long been a challenge to connectionists. In this paper, we present an extended survey of this area. Existing connectionist inference systems are reviewed, with particular reference to how they perform variable binding and rule-based reasoning, and whether they involve distributed or localist representations. The benefits and disadvantages of different representations and systems are outlined, and conclusions drawn regarding the capabilities of connectionist inference systems when compared with symbolic inference systems or when used for cognitive modeling
