Fractional-Order Discrete-Time Laguerre Filters: A New Tool for Modeling and Stability Analysis of Fractional-Order LTI SISO Systems

    Get PDF
This paper presents new results on modeling and analysis of dynamics of fractional-order discrete-time linear time-invariant single-input single-output (LTI SISO) systems by means of new, two-layer, “fractional-order discrete-time Laguerre filters.” It is interesting that the fractionality of the filters at the upper system dynamics layer is directly projected from the lower Laguerre-based approximation layer for the Grünwald-Letnikov difference. A new stability criterion for discrete-time fractional-order Laguerre-based LTI SISO systems is introduced and supplemented with a stability preservation analysis. Both the stability criterion and the stability preservation analysis bring up rather surprising results, which is illustrated with simulation examples

Identification of Nonlinear Systems Using the Hammerstein-Wiener Model with Improved Orthogonal Functions

    Get PDF
Hammerstein-Wiener systems present a structure consisting of three serial cascade blocks. Two are static nonlinearities, which can be described with nonlinear functions. The third block represents a linear dynamic component placed between the first two blocks. Some of the common linear model structures include a rational-type transfer function, orthogonal rational functions (ORF), finite impulse response (FIR), autoregressive with extra input (ARX), autoregressive moving average with exogenous inputs model (ARMAX), and output-error (O-E) model structure. This paper presents a new structure, and a new improvement is proposed, which is consisted of the basic structure of Hammerstein-Wiener models with an improved orthogonal function of MĂĽntz-Legendre type. We present an extension of generalised Malmquist polynomials that represent MĂĽntz polynomials. Also, a detailed mathematical background for performing improved almost orthogonal polynomials, in combination with Hammerstein-Wiener models, is proposed. The proposed approach is used to identify the strongly nonlinear hydraulic system via the transfer function. To compare the results obtained, well-known orthogonal functions of the Legendre, Chebyshev, and Laguerre types are exploited

Metaheuristics algorithms to identify nonlinear Hammerstein model: A decade survey

    Get PDF
Metaheuristics have been acknowledged as an effective solution for many difficult issues related to optimization. The metaheuristics, especially swarm’s intelligence and evolutionary computing algorithms, have gained popularity within a short time over the past two decades. Various metaheuristics algorithms are being introduced on an annual basis and applications that are more new are gradually being discovered. This paper presents a survey for the years 2011-2021 on multiple metaheuristics algorithms, particularly swarm and evolutionary algorithms, to identify a nonlinear block-oriented model called the Hammerstein model, mainly because such model has garnered much interest amidst researchers to identify nonlinear systems. Besides introducing a complete survey on the various population-based algorithms to identify the Hammerstein model, this paper also investigated some empirically verified actual process plants results. As such, this article serves as a guideline on the fundamentals of identifying nonlinear block-oriented models for new practitioners, apart from presenting a comprehensive summary of cutting-edge trends within the context of this topic area

Continuous Order Identification of PHWR Models Under Step-back for the Design of Hyper-damped Power Tracking Controller with Enhanced Reactor Safety

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record. In this paper, discrete time higher integer order linear transfer function models have been identified first for a 500 MWe Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) which has highly nonlinear dynamical nature. Linear discrete time models of the nonlinear nuclear reactor have been identified around eight different operating points (power reduction or step-back conditions) with least square estimator (LSE) and its four variants. From the synthetic frequency domain data of these identified discrete time models, fractional order (FO) models with sampled continuous order distribution are identified for the nuclear reactor. This enables design of continuous order Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) like compensators in the complex w-plane for global power tracking at a wide range of operating conditions. Modeling of the PHWR is attempted with various levels of discrete commensurate-orders and the achievable accuracies are also elucidated along with the hidden issues, regarding modeling and controller design. Credible simulation studies are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed reactor modeling and power level controller design. The controller pushes the reactor poles in higher Riemann sheets and thus makes the closed loop system hyper-damped which ensures safer reactor operation at varying dc-gain while making the power tracking temporal response slightly sluggish; but ensuring greater safety margin. This work has been supported by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, under the PURSE programme

A Bayesian approach to robust identification: application to fault detection

    Get PDF
In the Control Engineering field, the so-called Robust Identification techniques deal with the problem of obtaining not only a nominal model of the plant, but also an estimate of the uncertainty associated to the nominal model. Such model of uncertainty is typically characterized as a region in the parameter space or as an uncertainty band around the frequency response of the nominal model. Uncertainty models have been widely used in the design of robust controllers and, recently, their use in model-based fault detection procedures is increasing. In this later case, consistency between new measurements and the uncertainty region is checked. When an inconsistency is found, the existence of a fault is decided. There exist two main approaches to the modeling of model uncertainty: the deterministic/worst case methods and the stochastic/probabilistic methods. At present, there are a number of different methods, e.g., model error modeling, set-membership identification and non-stationary stochastic embedding. In this dissertation we summarize the main procedures and illustrate their results by means of several examples of the literature. As contribution we propose a Bayesian methodology to solve the robust identification problem. The approach is highly unifying since many robust identification techniques can be interpreted as particular cases of the Bayesian framework. Also, the methodology can deal with non-linear structures such as the ones derived from the use of observers. The obtained Bayesian uncertainty models are used to detect faults in a quadruple-tank process and in a three-bladed wind turbine

The objective of this report is to discuss the preliminary research done and basic understanding of the chosen topic, which is Design of Input Sequence to Capture Adequate Non Linearity. The ultimate aim of the project is to find the best input sequence that can capture adequate non linearity and give the best predictive empirical model of Continuous Stir Tank Reactor. The challenge in this project is to find the available input sequence, which has been available in other people research project, applied them in MATLAB Simulink and further tested in various types of Neural Network. Simulation model will be design to test for the best input sequence that will give the best result for prediction of output. Once the result from the simulation has been get, the best input sequence will be test on the real system to prove that the result obtain in the real cases is similar with simulation that had been carried out
