Traditional backend-oriented web applications are increasingly being replaced by frontend applications, which execute directly in the user's browser. Web application performance has been shown to directly affect business performance, and frontend applications enable unique performance improvements. However, building complex applications within the browser is still a new and poorly understood field, and engineering efforts within the field are often plagued by quality issues. This thesis addresses the current research gap around frontend applications, by investigating the applicability of isolation mechanisms available in browsers to frontend application architecture. We review the important publications around the topic, forming an overview of current research, and current best practices in the field. We use this understanding, combined with relevant industry experience, to categorize the available isolation mechanisms to four classes: state and variable isolation, isolation from the DOM, isolation within the DOM, and execution isolation. For each class, we provide background and concrete examples on both the related quality issues, as well as tools for their mitigation. Finally, we use the ISO 25010 quality standard to evaluate the impact of these isolation mechanisms on frontend application quality. Our results suggest that the application of the previously introduced isolation mechanisms has the potential to significantly improve several key areas of frontend application quality, most importantly compatibility and maintainability, but also performance and security. Many of these mechanisms also imply tradeoffs between other quality attributes, most commonly performance. Future work could include developing frontend application architectures that leverage these isolation mechanisms to their full potential.

A Taxonomy of Quality Metrics for Cloud Services

[EN] A large number of metrics with which to assess the quality of cloud services have been proposed over the last years. However, this knowledge is still dispersed, and stakeholders have little or no guidance when choosing metrics that will be suitable to evaluate their cloud services. The objective of this paper is, therefore, to systematically identify, taxonomically classify, and compare existing quality of service (QoS) metrics in the cloud computing domain. We conducted a systematic literature review of 84 studies selected from a set of 4333 studies that were published from 2006 to November 2018. We specifically identified 470 metric operationalizations that were then classified using a taxonomy, which is also introduced in this paper. The data extracted from the metrics were subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicated that most metrics evaluate quality attributes related to performance efficiency (64%) and that there is a need for metrics that evaluate other characteristics, such as security and compatibility. The majority of the metrics are used during the Operation phase of the cloud services and are applied to the running service. Our results also revealed that metrics for cloud services are still in the early stages of maturity only 10% of the metrics had been empirically validated. The proposed taxonomy can be used by practitioners as a guideline when specifying service level objectives or deciding which metric is best suited to the evaluation of their cloud services, and by researchers as a comprehensive quality framework in which to evaluate their approaches. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through the Adapt@Cloud Project under Grant TIN2017-84550-R. A Usability Inspection Method for Model-driven Web Development Processes

An estimated 790 million individuals globally are afflicted with at least one form of disability. Among this population, 79 million are afflicted with diverse neuromuscular disorders. The educational inclusion of these people is complicated by the loss of the ability to communicate and breathe, difficulty walking, dressing, and/or eating without the assistance of another person. Several studies have demonstrated that assistive tools can function as a means of providing support. However, the feasibility of obtaining these instruments is hindered by limited supply, exorbitant prices, intricate operation, and substantial maintenance requirements. As a result, they are promptly abandoned following their acquisition. In contrast, artificial intelligence algorithms are of paramount importance as they enable the execution of computational processes that acquire knowledge from data, thereby enabling progressive performance enhancements deprived of explicit human intervention. The current study is aimed to tackle the obstacle of ensuring that this population has access to education by developing a mobile application that utilizes an eye-tracking algorithm to gather fixation data from individuals afflicted with this condition. This enabled the development of an innovative and personalized learning environment, which yielded outcomes including enhanced usability, accessibility, autonomy, time management, and physical barrier elimination

Abstract. This master thesis focuses on optimizing software quality analysis at target projects in Elektrobit, a key player in the automotive software industry. In the light of continuous technological advancements in the industry, maintaining high-quality software is imperative. Current verification procedures, though effective, are time-consuming and often entail a significant amount of manual work. Additionally, the absence of efficient visualization tools leads to missed opportunities for improvement. I proposed an automated quality data collection process and a user-friendly visualization system, designed to streamline the process of software quality analysis. The solution is delivered in the form of an interactive dashboard, offering a centralized view of all pertinent quality metrics data, thereby saving time, reducing manual work, and improving user experience. The study employs a design science research (DSR) methodology, focusing on iterative design, implementation, and evaluation. The findings from the evaluation confirm the dashboard’s efficacy and relevance, illustrating its value in enhancing efficiency, productivity, and team collaboration. The user-centered design approach and regular user engagement during development proved to be instrumental in achieving these results. The research acknowledges certain limitations, such as the proof-of-concept stage of the dashboard and the relatively small user feedback group and suggests potential areas for future work. In conclusion, this research serves as a testament to the transformative potential of automated data collection and effective visualization systems in the software quality analysis domain, contributing to both theory and practice

The usability issues stand as one of the biggest obstacles to implement Mobile Healthcare Applications technologies. Consequently, the MHealth Apps users become confused in choosing the right apps for them. These applications must comply with the usability measure to ensure they can satisfy and are acceptable, especially chronic disease patients. Current usability evaluation models do not fulfill the usability characteristics and MHealth. These models tend to focus on the web application or general mobile apps. In addition, the evaluation of mHealth for further improvement becomes difficult or inaccurate. Thus, the main objective of this study is to construct a usability evaluation model for the chronic disease mobile application. A mixed methods research design was used in which qualitative data was collected using a systematic literature review to identify the usability characteristic and measures for MHealth. A purposive sampling technique was applied for semi-structured interviews with real users in gathering the usability requirements for the usability evaluation model. The usability characteristics and model development were verified by knowledge and domain experts. Usability testing was conducted with chronic disease patients as respondents, using chronic disease applications selected from an open-source mobile application to validate the implementation feasibility of the proposed model. Findings showed a total of five (5) usability characteristics, twelve (12) sub-characteristic, and forty-two (42) metrics were generated. The model was improvised based on the feedback from experts. This demonstrated the reliability, validity, and applicability of the model as guidelines to developers in developing the mobile healthcare application for chronic disease. This study makes a contribution by providing a usability model for usability practitioners and developers by incorporating new usability factors such as self-management as one of the usability factors for chronic disease. In addition, the model provides detailed guidelines to apply the model in evaluating mobile application to produce usable MHealth applications for patients with chronic diseases
