    Analysing business processes to manage and resolve strategic issues in a manufacturing business

    This paper demonstrates the value of applying heuristics to knowledge systems of business processes in a manufacturing company to resolve strategic issues and enable the attainment of strategic business goals. The manufacturing company was losing market share through not being able to get its new products to market quickly enough. The research illustrates the &lsquo;location&rsquo; and use of information systems in a manufacturing context. The researchers collected the specific business process knowledge in the company and developed a knowledge management system and then applied heuristics to the &lsquo;AS IS&rsquo; manufacturing process to determine better models of manufacturing that would enable faster to market product development and thus enable better strategic alignment between company expectations and realisation of market share. The paper highlights the strategic use of information systems as a means of directly solving business problems.<br /

    Model checking timed safety instrumented systems

    Defects in safety-critical software systems can cause large economical and other losses. Often these systems are far too complex to be tested extensively. In this work a formal verification technique called model checking is utilized. In the technique, a mathematical model is created that captures the essential behaviour of the system. The specifications of the system are stated in some formal language, usually temporal logic. The behaviour of the model can then be checked exhaustively against a given specification. This report studies the Falcon arc protection system engineered by UTU Oy, which is controlled by a single programmable logic controller (PLC). Two separate models of the arc protection system are created. Both models consist of a network of timed automata. In the first model, the controller operates in discrete time steps at a specific rate. In the second model, the controller operates at varying frequency in continuous time. Five system specifications were formulated in timed computation tree logic (TCTL). Using the model checking tool Uppaal both models were verified against all five specifications. The processing times of the verification are measured and presented. The discrete-time model has to be abstracted a lot before it can be verified in a reasonable time. The continuous-time model, however, covered more behaviour than the system to be modelled, and could still be verified in a moderate time period. In that sense, the continuous-time model is better than the discrete-time model. The main contributions of this report are the model checking of a safety instrumented system controlled by a PLC, and the techniques used to describe various TCTL specifications in Uppaal. The conclusion of the work is that model checking of timed systems can be used in the verification of safety instrumented systems

    Fabrication of high aspect ratio vibrating cylinder microgyroscope structures by use of the LIGA process

    Inertial grade microgyroscopes are of great importance to improve and augment inertial navigation systems based on GPS for industrial, automotive, and military applications. The efforts by various research groups worldwide to develop inertial grade microgyroscopes have not been successful to date. In 1994, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Louisiana State University and SatCon Technology Corporation (Boston, Massachusetts) proposed a series of shock tolerant micromachined vibrating cylinder rate gyroscopes with aspect ratios of up to 250:1 to meet the needs of inertial navigation systems based on existing conventional vibrating cylinder gyroscopes. Each microgyroscope consisted of a tall thin shell metallic cylinder attached to a substrate at one end and surrounded by four drive- and four sense-electrodes. The proposed drive- and sense-mechanisms were capacitive-force and capacitance-change, respectively. Since the high aspect ratio metallic microgyroscope structures could not be fabricated by using traditional silicon-based MEMS processes, a LIGA-based two layer fabrication process was developed. A wiring layer was constructed by using a combination of thick film photolithography and electroplating (nickel and gold) on a silicon substrate covered with silicon nitride and a tri-layer plating base; aligned X-ray lithography and nickel electroplating were used to build the high aspect ratio cylinders and electrodes. Deficiencies in the LIGA process were also addressed in this research. Three types of X-ray mask fabrication processes for multi-level LIGA were developed on graphite, borosilicate glass and silicon nitride substrates. Stable and reliable gold electroplating methods for X-ray masks were also established. The plating rate and internal stress of deposits were thoroughly characterized for two brands of commercially available sulfite-based gold electroplating solutions, Techni Gold 25E and NEUTRONEX 309. The gaps between the cylinders and electrodes, which are defined by thin PMMA walls during electroplating, were found to be smaller than designed and deformed in many of the microgyroscope structures. The lateral dimensional loss (LDL) and deformation were identified to be related to the overall thickness and lateral aspect ratio (LAR) of the thin PMMA walls

    Bridging formal models : an engineering perspective

    The thesis presents different techniques that can be used to build formal behavioral models. If modal properties are formulated, the models can be subjected to verification techniques to determine whether a model possesses the desired properties. However many native environments do not facilitate tools or techniques to verify them. Hence, these models need to be transformed into other models that provide suitable techniques for a formal analysis. The transformations are classified into two engineering approaches, namely syntactically engineered models and semantically engineered models. Syntactically engineered models are constructed from input specifications without explicitly considering the semantics. Semantically engineered models are constructed from input specifications by explicitly considering the semantics. The syntactic engineering approach presents four dedicated modeling techniques that construct or disseminate verification results for formal models. The first modeling technique describes a way to create models from system descriptions that specify concurrent behavior. Here, we model three variations of a 2×2 switch, for which the models are subsequently compared to models created in the specification languages: TLA+, Bluespec, Statecharts, and ACP. The comparison validates that mCRL2 is a suitable specification language to model descriptions or specify the behavior for prototype systems. The second syntactic technique constructs an mCRL2 model from a software implementation that operates a printer for printing Printed Circuit Boards. The model is used to advise (other) software engineers on dangerous language constructs in the control software. Hence, the model is model checked for various safety properties. The implementation is modeled through an over-approximation on the behavior by abstracting from program variables, such that only interface calls between processes and non-deterministic choices in procedures remain. The third modeling technique describes a language transformation from the language Chi 2.0 language to the mCRL2 language. The purpose of the transformation is to facilitate model checking techniques to the discrete part of the Chi 2.0 language
