    Minimal symmetric Darlington synthesis

    We consider the symmetric Darlington synthesis of a p x p rational symmetric Schur function S with the constraint that the extension is of size 2p x 2p. Under the assumption that S is strictly contractive in at least one point of the imaginary axis, we determine the minimal McMillan degree of the extension. In particular, we show that it is generically given by the number of zeros of odd multiplicity of I-SS*. A constructive characterization of all such extensions is provided in terms of a symmetric realization of S and of the outer spectral factor of I-SS*. The authors's motivation for the problem stems from Surface Acoustic Wave filters where physical constraints on the electro-acoustic scattering matrix naturally raise this mathematical issue

    Thermal Noise Compliant Synthesis of Linear Lumped Macromodels

    This paper addresses the synthesis of equivalent circuits from black box state-space macromodels, as produced by model order reduction or rational curve fitting schemes. The emphasis is here on thermal noise compliance, intended as the guarantee that the produced netlists can be safely used in standard circuit solvers to perform thermal noise analysis, in addition to usual DC, AC, and transient simulations. Due to the fact that SNR is a key figure of merit in nearly all signal processing analog circuits, noise analysis is mandatory in design and verification of most analog and RF/millimeter-wave electronic applications. However, common macromodel synthesis approaches rely on components that do not (and cannot) have an associated thermal noise model, such as controlled sources or negative circuit elements. Therefore, macromodel-based noise analyses are generally not possible with currently available approaches. We propose a circuit realization derived from the classical resistance extraction synthesis, with suitable modifications for enhancing macromodel sparsity and efficiency. The resulting equivalent netlist, which is compatible with any standard circuit solver, is shown to produce exact noise characteristics, even if its elements are derived through a mathematical procedure, totally unrelated to the actual topology of the physical system under modeling. The procedure is validated by several examples

    Effect of doping and oxygen vacancies on the octahedral tilt transitions in the BaCeO3 perovskite

    We present a systematic study of the effect of Y doping and hydration level on the structural transformations of BaCeO3 based on anelastic spectroscopy experiments. The temperature of the intermediate transformation between rhombohedral and orthorhombic Imma phases rises with increasing the molar fraction x of Y roughly as (500 K)x in the hydrated state, and is depressed of more than twice that amount after complete dehydration. This is explained in terms of the effect of doping on the average (Ce/Y)-O and Ba-O bond lengths, and of lattice relaxation from O vacancies. The different behavior of the transition to the lower temperature Pnma orthorhombic phase is tentatively explained in terms of progressive flattening of the effective shape of the OH ion and ordering of the O vacancies during cooling.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    International audienceThe objective of our work is the derivation of efficient algorithms for the synthesis of microwave multiplexers. In our opinion, an efficient frequency design process calls for the understanding of the structure of n x n inner (or lossless) reciprocal rational functions for n > 2. Whereas the case n = 2 is completely understood and a keystone of filter synthesis very little seems to be known about the polynomial structure of such matrices when they involve more than 2 ports. We therefore start with the analysis of the 3 x 3 case typically of practical use in the manufacturing of diplexers. Based on recent results obtained on minimal degree reciprocal Darlington synthesis, we derive a polynomial model for 3 x 3 reciprocal inner rational matrices with given McMillan degree

    Output Filter Aware Optimization of the Noise Shaping Properties of {\Delta}{\Sigma} Modulators via Semi-Definite Programming

    The Noise Transfer Function (NTF) of {\Delta}{\Sigma} modulators is typically designed after the features of the input signal. We suggest that in many applications, and notably those involving D/D and D/A conversion or actuation, the NTF should instead be shaped after the properties of the output/reconstruction filter. To this aim, we propose a framework for optimal design based on the Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov (KYP) lemma and semi-definite programming. Some examples illustrate how in practical cases the proposed strategy can outperform more standard approaches.Comment: 14 pages, 18 figures, journal.     Assigning and combining probabilities in single-case studies

    There is currently a considerable diversity of quantitative measures available for summarizing the results in single-case studies. Given that the interpretation of some of them is difficult due to the lack of established benchmarks, the current paper proposes an approach for obtaining further numerical evidence on the importance of the results, complementing the substantive criteria, visual analysis, and primary summary measures. This additional evidence consists of obtaining the statistical significance of the outcome when referred to the corresponding sampling distribution. This sampling distribution is formed by the values of the outcomes (expressed as data nonoverlap, R-squared, etc.) in case the intervention is ineffective. The approach proposed here is intended to offer the outcome"s probability of being as extreme when there is no treatment effect without the need for some assumptions that cannot be checked with guarantees. Following this approach, researchers would compare their outcomes to reference values rather than constructing the sampling distributions themselves. The integration of single-case studies is problematic, when different metrics are used across primary studies and not all raw data are available. Via the approach for assigning p values it is possible to combine the results of similar studies regardless of the primary effect size indicator. The alternatives for combining probabilities are discussed in the context of single-case studies pointing out two potentially useful methods- one based on a weighted average and the other on the binomial test
