Study of the Earth’s surface objects reflectance characteristics with unmanned aerial vehicles is one of the most actual remote sensing trends. Aim of this work was to develop a method for obtaining of photospectral data using unmanned aerial spectrometry vehicle. An adaptation of the cameras spatial resolution evaluating technique based on a specialized target photographic fixation was proposed. A method for synchronizing of the camera and spectrometer of the videospectral device was also proposed. It was based on an experiment with spectra and screen images recording. Different colors were sequentially displayed on the screen. The percentage contribution of each of colors to the “mixed” spectra was calculated. So the out-of-sync time estimation became possible. In addition the work proposed the method for combining images and spectra with their merging into photospectral images. The method allows to consider the aircraft displacement when linking the spectrometer field of view to the RGB image. The way for photospectral images combining based on the images key points detectors was also proposed.Spatial resolutions for 3 aerial vehicle cameras were obtained. The study showed that the spatial resolution decrease of Zenmuse H20T caused by the device carrier movement with a speed of up to 5 m/s can be ignored. The videospectral device camera and spectrometer out-of-sync time was evaluated. An automatic merging of a set of images using key points detection was made. The spectrometry areas were linked to the panoramic image. The reflectance coefficients were obtained for each of the areas in the range of 350–900 nm. The areas to image linking accuracy was 84.9 ± 11.6 %.A discrepancy between the angular spatial resolution values got experimentally and theoretically was revealed as a result of the cameras spatial resolution evaluating. This indicates the importance of the imaging equipment spatial resolution experimental evaluation. The videospectral device spectrometer and observation camera out-of-sync time evaluation made it possible to correct the data recording time. This led to the timing error standard deviation reduction from 142 ms to 15 ms. The way for the unmanned aerial spectrometry vehicle data obtaining in a photospectral representation was developed. The proposed methods and techniques can be used in similar unmanned systems.

The ability to acquire a representation of the spatial environment and the ability to localize within it are essential for successful navigation in a-priori unknown environments. This document presents a computer vision method and related algorithms for the navigation of a robot in a static environment. Our environment is a simple white colored area with black obstacles and robot (with some identification mark-a circle and a rectangle of orange color which helps in giving it a direction) present over it. This environment is grabbed in a camera which sends image to the desktop using data cable. The image is then converted to the binary format from jpeg format using software which is then processed in the computer using MATLAB. The data acquired from the program is then used as an input for another program which controls the robot drive motors using wireless controls. Robot then tries to reach its destination avoiding obstacles in its path. The algorithm presented in this paper uses the distance transform methodology to generate paths for the robot to execute. This paper describes an algorithm for approximately finding the fastest route for a vehicle to travel one point to a destination point in a digital plain map, avoiding obstacles along the way. In our experimental setup the camera used is a SONY HANDYCAM. This camera grabs the image and specifies the location of the robot (starting point) in the plain and its destination point. The destination point used in our experimental setup is a table tennis ball, but it can be any other entity like a single person, a combat unit or a vehicle

Applications like, change detection, global monitoring, disaster detection and management have emerging requirements that need the availability of large amounts of data. This data is currently being capture by a multiplicity of instruments and EO (Earth Observation) sensors originating large volumes of data that needs to be stored, processed and accessed in order to be useful – as an example, ENVISAT accumulates, in a yearly basis, several hundred terabytes of data. This need to recover, store, process and access brings some interesting challenges, like storage space, processing power, bandwidth and security, just to mention a few. These challenges are still very important on today’s technological world. If we take a look for example at the number of subscribers of ISP (Internet Service Providers) broadband services on the developed world today, one can notice that broadband services are still far from being common and dominant. On the underdeveloped countries the picture is even dimmer, not only from a bandwidth point of view but also in all other aspects regarding information and communication technologies (ICTs). All this challenges need to be taken into account if a service is to reach the broadest audience possible. Obviously protection and securing of services and contents is an extra asset that helps on the preservation of possible business values, especially if we consider such a costly business as the space industry. This thesis presents and describes a system which allows, not only the encoding and decoding of several EO products into a JPEG2000 format, but also supports some of the security requirements identified previously that allows ESA (European Space Agency) and related EO services to define and apply efficient EO data access security policies and even to exploit new ways to commerce EO products over the Internet.

Geobase Information System Impacts on Space Image Formats

    Get PDF
As Geobase Information Systems increase in number, size and complexity, the format compatability of satellite remote sensing data becomes increasingly more important. Because of the vast and continually increasing quantity of data available from remote sensing systems the utility of these data is increasingly dependent on the degree to which their formats facilitate, or hinder, their incorporation into Geobase Information Systems. To merge satellite data into a geobase system requires that they both have a compatible geographic referencing system. Greater acceptance of satellite data by the user community will be facilitated if the data are in a form which most readily corresponds to existing geobase data structures. The conference addressed a number of specific topics and made recommendations

The development of the toner density sensor for closed-loop feedback laser printer calibration

    Get PDF
A new infrared (IR) sensor was developed for application in closed-loop feedback printer calibration as it relates to monochrome (black toner only) laser printers. The toner density IR sensor (TDS) was introduced in the early 1980’s; however, due to cost and limitation of technologies at the time, implementation was not accomplished until within the past decade. Existing IR sensor designs do not discuss/address: • EMI (electromagnetic interference) effects on the sensor due to EP (electrophotography) components • Design considerations for environmental conditions • Sensor response time as it affects printer process speed The toner density sensor (TDS) implemented in the Lexmark E series printer reduces these problems and eliminates the use of the current traditional “open-loop” (meaning feedback are parameters not directly affecting print darkness such as page count, toner level, etc.) calibration process where print darkness is adjusted using previously calculated and stored EP process parameters. The historical process does not have the ability to capture cartridge component variation and environmental changes which affect print darkness variation. The TDS captures real time data which is used to calculate EP process parameters for the adjustment of print darkness; as a result, greatly reducing variations uncontrolled by historical printer calibration. Specifically, the first and primary purpose of this research is to reduce print darkness variation using the TDS. The second goal is to mitigate the TDS EMI implementation issue for reliable data accuracy
